Had to share this setup because I could not believe it worked as well as it did.
High Sec Improved Command Center with single full production Mechanical Parts processor running on 23 hour cycle. Total Noble Metals production = 3047 units / 30 min Total Base Metals production = 3077 units / 30 min

I'm using a similar setup, but I blossom out my extractors to where the best extraction is coming from and setup the processors on the low yield side.

I follow what Ebonix said, group your mines on the hot spot, then put the refineries where they fit best on the outside.
Also, incase you haven't noticed, the yields on planets is slowly dropping (as more ppl jump on each planet, overall yield on entire planet seems to drop). So, this may work for now, but in a few weeks expect a decent drop that may just put kink in your lines.
I try to have a buffer zone, if nothing else, it will eventually build up to where i don't have to task for a day.

Wouldn't suprise me if extractors grouped that closely together mined the area out faster than if they are spread out a bit.
trade off between short/long term setups.

I haven't yet noticed any falloff in my extractors for clumping them. Retired from corp sales. Time to spend some of this on pretty explosions :) |

He's making 5 mechanical parts per hour which sell easily for 6k a unit. 30k/hr is 720k/day or 21m/month. 21m/month is peanuts and 720k a day is like 1-2 high sec mission BS rats but the way he sets it up it is very much passive income. Resetting those extractors may take 2 mins and hauling 450 m3 every 2-3 days to empty the PCC and then like a once a month trip to jita in a hauler to sell.
21m/month per planet and he probably spent no more than 4m total setting it up. Not bad for something that doesn't require much effort. I would like to have room for a launchpad so I have to do even less work but other than that it is a real nice setup. - It's not "Play through a pre-set story, become stronger, do endgame". Gameplay is open ended, and you make your own story. Unless you're too afraid of 'pvp grief' to do anything relevant |

Serious, non troll question: is 8:1 extractors:processors normal in high sec?
I only fiddled with PI in nullsec, and I'm used to seeing 1500-2000. Wherein you use a lot more processors and less extractors.

Extractors -> Launchpad Launchpad -> Processors Processors -> Launchpad
Where is your launchpad and why are you directly linking extractors to processors?

I have somewhat a similar setup with my PI colonies. In fact, to be honest, you don't really need to connect any of them to your command center. Your extractors, processors and launch pads can still operate without a direct link to the command center (seriously, try it yourself). This saves up a little bit of CPU and Powergrid due to one less link.
But overall, I suggest you disconnect the command center from the advanced processor and have the mechanical parts routed to a launchpad so that you can safely export them into the customs office without having to worry about some stranger stealing your loot that was launched randomly by the command center.

For stuff like noble metals, yeah it is that bad in high sec. The more common stuff will have 6:1 or even 4:1 in high sec but the more common stuff is worth less of course. - It's not "Play through a pre-set story, become stronger, do endgame". Oh yes, putting the command center into the cluster is pointless. It's handy to have close to your colony, but use a launchpad as the focus point.

Your storage unit is pointless. Get rid of it, put the launch pad where the storage is, and use it for storage.
There also isn't any reason to have a link to your command center.

To go in a little bit more detail:
1. Nobody runs out of CPU on planets. Ever. 2. Storage and launchpads cost the same powergrid. 3. Launchpads have twice the space. 4. Launchpads don't require messing around with expedited transfers.
Use the launchpad. If your launchpad runs out of space, use a second launchpad.

The reasoning for the storage is for finished goods, Sorry should have explained that. Sometimes I find that I will fill up my launchpad with unfinished and have no room for the finished so this seems to work out the best for both worlds, Also never thought about the link to the CC, guess it was just habit, thx for the pointer.

Edited by: Blackmarxz on 08/09/2010 22:17:10 I have noticed issues trying to get extractors to route though each other
I can set up links that go through multiple extractors, but when I try to set up a route I get a error message of something along the lines of Union says no" etc ;P
Is it that the links get overheated, and I have to upgrade them as I'm on a reasonably high yield spot, or do I have set up the route in order? (ie closer to to final destination rather than the back)
Doesn't seem that I have more than 5 pins in one series of links
Cheers

Here's mine on WH world: PI-WH-SETUP This is making Rocket Fuel for me.
Split setup, extractors only pulling one resource, I import the other resource from another world in the WH.
extractors >> launch pad launch pad >> basic processor basic processor >> launch pad launch pad >> advance processor advance processor >> 3rd launch pad
this site is producing 20 Rocket Fuel an hour and runs non-stop. I restart the extractors each night, restock the other resource every five days.
I have three of these running in the system now. that's about 1400 units of fuel per day. yummy

Are you upgrading the links to make sure they're able to carry all the materials? Check your link capacities, make sure you've got the pipe to handle what's coming through.

I upgraded my links a notch, but still seem to have issues in that I can link extractors, but not route them/ Perhaps an effect of having a level 5 skill'?, as I'm only on level 4 on most atm'
Message is - (Invalid: Cannot route to extractors)
Somewhat frustrating as I'd like my set-ups to be prettier :)

Why do you want to route to an extractor? Extractors only output, they do not accept any inputs. Factories, storage and your pcc are the only things you can route to or would ever want to route to. - It's not "Play through a pre-set story, become stronger, do endgame". Gameplay is open ended, and you make your own story. Unless you're too afraid of 'pvp grief' to do anything relevant |

The pictures above seem to link extractors. I presume the route through them as well - or perhaps the official rote selection is the spaceport still.

You can link a chain of extractors, and route over them to the launchpad. I typically do a chain of 3-4 and you only have to upgrade the 2 links closest to the launchpad. Then again, if you're doing 23 hour cycles in highsec, you shouldn't even have to consider upgrading links.
I vaguely recall once having an error message when I tried to do more than 5 in a series. But after I went the 3-4 route, never had a problem again.

Your last bit hits it.
You create a route from a source to a destination. The system will pick the specific links that are used to accomplish that.
