Edited by: Omir Kajil on 01/09/2010 04:48:31 Hello all, So I've got an issue that seems to have cropped up that is interfering with my ability to play EvE reliably.
[oh god n,o /wrists.]
I got a new internet provider, and as it's wireless I was a little concerned at first at how well EvE would play, but it seemed to play just fine.
But now it's having issues, for no apparent reason, or at least none that I know of. I'll start up EvE and at times the internet connection will just "decide" to disconnect and reconnect, sometimes several times consecutively. This is extensive to the point where I've gotten podded when I most certainly should not have been... Not to mention the other time I tried downloading the patch, and had to try maybe a dozen times before it succeeded...
because the internet disconnected and reconnected at the EXACT second I began the download. This problem does not happen with any thing else, only EvE, granted EvE is the only MMORPG I play.
...Any thoughts or ideas how to fix it? I'd be very grateful for the help...
Edit- needed moar spaces between paragraphs But I digress. This one time at fat camp, i was flying a dominix, and then I was so hungry that i ate 3 planets and collapsed into a black hole, which ate my sig. |

If you're using one of those new fangled wireless phones at home, they can interfere with wireless signals, causing problems / drop outs.
The thing i hate about wireless is that the connection speed is limited to a certain extent by the amount of people who connect to it at the same time. If you're in an area where lots of people use it, you're kinda borked and theres not much you can do.
Of course my experience comes from Australia, where our internets is based on trusty, high speed copper cables run by a fail company of epic proportions.

Do you mean you have a new ISP which is wireless, or do you mean you have a new ISP which have provided you with a wireless modem? Buy yourself a wired modem or router and plug it in.

lol very true, birdy... THe thing that confuses me however, is that for awhile, maybe at least a month, idk, it worked just fine.
Also I live in Northwester US if that helps at all. But I digress. This one time at fat camp, i was flying a dominix, and then I was so hungry that i ate 3 planets and collapsed into a black hole, which ate my sig. |

Are you sure it's the ISP as opposed to something having to do with the equipment inside your house (either hardware or software) ? And yes, it could be all worked fine for a month... but now it doesn't. Could be a mildly damaged component that finally got worse, could be some software you installed that changed some network connection settings, etc.

Hm. So it sounds fixable, from what I'm hearing here. I'll look into it, thanks for all the help. :D
Oh, and to all the "move to non-communist country" folks.

That's why it's not called "wireless network" but rather "wireless notwork".
I am 90% convinced that a simple Cat5e cable will fix all of your issues, but I don't think your provider will be inclined to help you...

Yes, NW U.S. sounds awfully close to the CANADIAN border, you dimwit! ![Laughing](/images/icon_lol.gif)
Any way, OP, are you sure it only disconnects when playing Eve, or does it disconnect during the time-frame in which you play Eve? My previous wireless broadband provider had some kind of maintenance routine going on at 20:00 every night, and that somehow screwed up any high-speed connections and caused disconnects.

Edited by: Antihrist Pripravnik on 01/09/2010 09:44:02 I feel your pain, OP. Ubiquiti NanoStation 5 here. It worked for a couple of months and now I'm lucky if I can open a text page during the day. During the night it works just fine, so I suspect that my ISP is a monopolistic money-sucking leech and wants me to upgrade to a more expensive package (which I don't need btw).
They used to say that the problem was with my old equipment (that I haven't bought from them), so I had to buy their equipment in order to "get a better connection". It got better alright, but only for a couple of months. Now I have the same symptoms as before, so I think that they want me to buy the more expensive package.
But... I have no choice (for the moment) since they are the only (legal) wireless ISP in my area (the last owner of the ISP company I was using got busted for distributing pirated software - lots of it). And no, in this God forgotten Serbia some areas as close as 10km from a town don't even have telephone landlines (WiMax instead) let alone multiple Internet connectivity options. ---------- OP, if your ISP have a helpdesk or tech support, contact them and ask what may be causing the troubles. Any normal ISP has the equipment to test the signal strength at your home - ask them to come and test it and see if there are any signal interference from the area. If the signal is good and there's no interference in the area, then ask them to check the hardware (if you bought it from them) or place their own hardware (antenna, cables, wireless card and router if needed) and see if that fixes the problem.
You could also scan you computer with some anti virus software (non of that "free-scan-spyware-adding" c**p, use Avira, Avast or any trial version of some major AV software, like Eset for example). There are some viruses/trojans/whatever that can mess up your connection.
If your computer is clean from viruses and you've done everything you can with tech support and still have problems, then if you have a possibility to switch to another ISP or, even better, switch to a wired connection - do so.

Do you live in a big city? If yes, and if you get a list of over 10 wlan accesspoints if you run a scan on your computer then this is prob the problem, cause this masses of wireless networks don't like each other cause the frequencies are overlapping and since interwebz sellers trow one at every customer this gets even worse atm.
Fix it with a cable. -- please consider to visit our w-space system, cake will be served immediately. |
