Also, this video shows the state of our tech back in March. Things have come on quite a bit since then.
The PhysX 2.x series is gimped on the cpu by running ****ing ancient instruction sets instead of SSE right? Unless you guys use the PhysX 3 series when it comes out sooner or later. Mirror's Edge is absolutely horrifying to run with cpu PhysX enabled.

Is this cloth tech 100% in incarna? Ive only seen the incarna vids with chicks wearing rubber :P
On the whole ATI vs NVIDIA front:
Run hybrid and get the best of both worlds.
Linkage
Ill be doing this setup once the ATI 6*** series comes out and using my 8800gt as my physx board.
As long as its a Nvidia 86** series (with a minimum of 32 cores and a minimum of 256MB dedicated graphics memory) and up it can be used as a dedicated physx (even in a PCIE 1x slot - with some modding) and they can be picked up for dirt cheap now. Or if you have one laying around from upgrading then your gold. -----------------------------------------------------

I don't like how CCP are making this look like it needs a Nvidia card to work in the slightest.
If ATI cards don't have similar effects then you're gonna **** off alot of users who payed good money for their high end ATI cards, we didn't pay $$$'s to run games on low/medium settings.
Especially 5970 users.
Originally by: Zeba Meh old news is old. On a brighter note my aging cuda and apex enabled nvidia 9800gtx+ will probably have an easier time rendering all the new shiney than even the newest fAilTI cards.
The only fail here is fanboyism.
Its CCP's fault that companies make video cards that don't do their job somehow? And you have the balls to call it fanboism?
I quit ATI when ATI quit working with every game. Not because I wanted to be an Nvidia "fanboi".
Just make sure you manually connect you fan, boy.
Haha i made a funny. Nah the linux drivers don't have that bug and I cool every gpu separately from its stock cooling.
Anyway short story long its old but looks great.
You obviously know nothing about ATI, for people read news sites, aka not you - ATI have made an Open-Source alternative to physx called Bullet which runs on the CPU and runs well, we wouldn't have this problem in the first place if Nvidia didn't purposly restrict Physx's use to the outdated x87 instruction set.
Physx would run fine on CPU's if nvidia allowed it to, CCP could use bullet - which would allow the advanced physics to work on ATI and Nvidia cards, so get your facts straight.
It's amazing how you instantly assume I'm an ATI fanboy aswell, the Nvidia fanboys must be on the offensive today.
First of all, I said nothing about you whatsoever, and you make direct accusations at me. If you don't get the fan, boy reference don't comment on it and make yourself look like an ass. Whats truly ironic is that you not getting the reference illustrates that you know little about nvidia cards, yet feel compelled to speak on them.
The simple truth of the matter is that it is a free market and I have a choice as a consumer to make. I chose the most compatible product I could afford. I chose it because "the other comany" produced products that were not compatible with multiple games.
When you say "fanboi" try to picture a fat man doing burlesque with 2 big ass fans that say CCP on one and HTFU on the other. Because that dude is me. |

Has EVE come to this??
I guess 5 years IS too long to play a game... time to move on before the transvestites take over..
On the other hand, this is right up Sir Molle's allee I guess, but you can't look at this and tell me to HTFU with a straight face.
I know, I know.. Leave my stuff and GBTWOW (Can't, never played WOW.. If I had, maybe I would understand THIS..)

Don't the new ATI drivers screw eve anyways? So I'd say ATI don't want you to play eve! Please ATI is lowend and always will be (BTW we can call ATI AMD soon as the ATI name will be replaced...) I mean really my 8800gts I had to RMA was replaced with a 5670.... brand new card... my 8800gts blew it away... it's going back.
Recap... 3year old card, blows away brand new... why do people even use ATI lol.
Edit: keep the love for nvidia who *invented* the gpu.

I will still bet that my aging 9800gtx+ does better than a comparable(or even better) ati card on the same system.

Edited by: Simon Mickey on 06/09/2010 08:25:17 God you people are so ****ing ignorant sometimes. (edit: it's worth noting that the ignorance in this thread is displayed on both sides of the GPU divide. I expect a 8800GTS would outperform a 5670 by about 3-4 fps at most; but given the 8800GTS was aimed at the low end of the ethuaist market, and the 5670 sits at a completely different price point then the 8800GTS when it came out HOW IS THAT SURPRISING OR CONTROVERSIAL? It's like a 6800GT beating an 8200GT you derp)
Physx has been around for a long long time. It's becoming increasingly used in games because it's one of the better physics simulations. nVidia have developed it, and omg it runs on nVidia cards best, but you can also run it on your CPU.
How is this surprising or news?
For a long time ATi have lagged behind in the hardware rendering and hardware calculations side of things. It's not a big issue to most people, but if you're involved in 3D work then you probably understand what I'm talking about.
It's also not surprising that people want an increasing amount of realism in their games, and that currently one of the easiest ways to implement this is through the Physx engine.
Yes, it runs better on nVidia cards then it does on your CPU - that's not surprising given that nVidia have constantly pushed for hardware based calculations and rendering in other aspects of their business.
It's not fanboyism to see that although ATi have produced a lot of great GPU's lately, nVidia GPU's are the choice for anything involving hardware based calculations (like physics simulations).
So worst case for ATi users, you have to dial down the physx level in order for your framerate to be acceptable on older CPU's. I honestly don't see that being much of an issue, and if you're ****ed off because you spent three weeks pay or whatever on the latest ATi GPU and you can't do use hardware renderers and you can't do hardware calculations then perhaps you should have done your research before you spent so much =\

The problem here is that nVidia has been acting somewhat shady when it comes to the old PhysX PPU's; their more recent drivers revert to software mode when there is a non nVidia GPU in the system, even though they worked perfectly fine with older drivers.
The CPU version of PhysX is unnecessarily slow, but that is probably more of a compatibility issue than anything else.
Oh, and yeah, ATi really do need to get their thumbs out of their arses and write CUDA support into their video card drivers.

You are correct, I misspoke. I meant that it's not really surprising that technology nVidia owns and has worked with works on nVidia cards.
In anycase, I can't wait to see what the rest of Incarna will look like :)

Lets just leave it at both company's are pretty much equal when it comes to video cards, One has features the other doesn't but the other makes up for what it doesn't with features it's does. So don't argue about video cards. Start arguing about how many hamsters just happened to died in the post processing of that video.
REAL TIME DEMO PLEASE! I think the players would love to see Technology demonstration of the software in question with a rendering demo, You could also use this as a benchmark tool for video cards to see if they will be complaint or not =) Mr Murphy is after me and you, he's the ultimate in Pvp and has not yet lost a match. Ageia didn't really develop it, NovodeX did. Once Ageia purchased it, it essentially stagnated due to a million issues, once nvidia then got their hands on Ageia it got worse as they really didnt have a clue and have pretty much left it to rot while mutilating CPU performance (which is what NovodeX focused on, it ran much faster with the same accuracy before being purchased by Ageia)

Yeah, cos that wouldn't be an own goal. They would also have to pay licensing and such, why would they want to pay a company who is floundering so hard through mismanagement and constant lying to stakeholders? In short it wont happen. But while we're here, I'd love nvidia to pull their thumbs out and actually write native OpenCL support instead of OpenCL over CUDA, because that's growing really old, really fast.
But at the end of the day, a solution like Shroud from CloakWorks would have most likely been better - not only is it more domain accurate, it has a great SDK and content creation interface, cross platform and 8-10x more efficient than PhysX (even on gpu) at scenes with more than 1 high detail cloth mesh (i.e a crowd)... it also doesn't have any vendor tie ins and is cross platform while still being commercial closed source stuff, just what CCP loves.

Just an FYI - I have 3 Computers, one with a GTX470, one with a HD5850 and finally one Laptop with a Mobility GTX285, I've been a PC enthusiast for 16 years and I will be as bold as to say I do know my stuff, I've refurbished 3 Nvidia cards and 5 ATI cards in the past 7 years and I keep a close eye on how the GPU market changes, saying I know nothing about Nvidia when I clearly told you why PhysX is a bad idea is ignorant.

Actually, they wouldn't.
How's the SW support for Stream/OpenCL coming along? I don't have an ATi card, so I haven't bothered to check. An open language with support from all major manufacturers would of course be ideal.
