Was gonna post this in the Corp/Alliance forum, but thought I would ask in here first.
I know its handy to belong to one in the early stages of the game for plenty of help, etc, but due to my working hours, and nature of my work, my time on here is erratic, at best!
I would like to join a Corp that accepts newbies, but I would not be able to commit myself if they have set times for doing things, etc. Obviously my work and family comes first, and they dictate the hours I get to play on EVE, so it would not be fair on people who are willing to help me out knowing I may not be able to get on at certain times, if required.
Maybe there are some flexible Corps about that will accept a new player willing to learn the ropes, but cannot commit to time restraints?

Go there. You've to join probably 3-10 corps to find the right one. If you're in an out of game community (4chan, reddit, SA, ars technica, team liquid etc), look if they've an official corp out there you could join. |

Been sniffing around and it seems "E-Uni" could be the place I am looking for! |

There's a filter on the corp search in-game for this - it will only show corps that have identified themselves as "casual".
A lot of corps I see generally say stuff like "we realise real life will always come first etc" in their descriptions, so look for stuff like that. |

Unfortunately "casual" in my expereince equates to "mining". Finding a corp that fits what you are looking for and at the times you are able to play is akin to finding a needle in a haystack, especially in >0.0.
Try the establishment corps such as Eve Uni or RvB but be prepared for periods of inactivity. This ain't WoW where you join a group to go kill grues or somesuch.

Eve uni would be a good place to start, though their application process can take over a week when their recruitment officers are busy. You should use this time to check out some of the other corps that you think may suit your style. There are many that advertise that they are casual friendly, but as Pookie McPook said, they will often be mining or PVE corps, if this is what you are looking for then you'll have no worries, if, however, you are looking for PVP some of the pirate corps out there that value independence in their pilots may be a better bet.
Remember that when you have an interview with a prospective corp, you are interviewing them as much as the reverse. You need to try and get a feel for if the corp will be right for you.
There will likely be some aspects of EVE's gameplay that you won't be able to get fully involved with due to time constraints, but there are so many different ways to play that you will never be short of a challenge and some fun.
Whatever you decide to do, it's a game, so if the people you are with aren't making it more fun, find another group. |

The ingame corp search/filter is ineffective. Many corps check all of the above in a vain attempt to recruit anyone and everyone. They're no good.
When you see a corp to which you think may be a good match for you, then talk to the recruiter. Ask lots of questions: What time zone are your members most active? (all time zones is a bullshit answer) What does your corp actively do together? (we do everything is also a bullshit answer) When was the last time your corp did that activity together? How many members are alts and how many are real people? What's the corp policy on semi inactive members? What do you expect me to bring to the group? What can I expect to receive from the group? Does the corp bring along security for their acivities? (you're never 100% safe in highsec) What sort of background checks does the corp employ? (super important and why my blog exists)
It's ok to ask questions. I would be highly wary of any corp that didn't have reasonable answers for the questions above. Sooner or later a highsec pirate comes along and destroys everything they have *hint*hint*nudge*nudge*ha*ha* Hijinks of a highsec pirate http://cyprusblack.blogspot.com/ |
