I have over 3m SP in missile skills in a toon but one of the Drakes I have has 3 x Field purger rigs - now may be a silly question but to convert for PvP would it bit best ripping these out and replacing with shield extender rigs and also is it REALLY stupid to use heavy missiles (as I can use T2 ammo) or just switch to HAM for PVP with MWD to get in close (but then sig radius increases . Mind you such a fat sgip is that really gonna matter that much|?
Any advice/tips and/or fits would be useful - basically one of my characters has mainly PvE and industrial skills - and his corp has been war decced, I have a newish alt that I am training for pure PvP but at present it can just fly a frigate adequately and is in a different corp so just looking to do what I can to help the corp with some BS and cruiser spammage (probably caracal as anti-frig work)
The char has good shield and some armor skills and minimal in ewar type skills - although I am training some up as we speak just to use diruptors etc on some other ships.
thanks in advance.

Well I wouldn't worry too much about one drake, because you will loose many. I'd say leave the rigs alone and just build it with those. Then buy a new one with the correct rigs.

ok - I appreciate that but have you any thoughts on a setup (as the rigs are in place) and what about heavy missiles vs HAMs - would I be better effectively spamming targets and staying close to any ewar/logistic ships and protecting them vs frigs and inties or HAM and just jump into the fray asap?

Just buy a new drake and put extender rigs on it. You'll be buying lots of new drakes if you do pvp with them anyway. That, and it's good to have a PVE fit around for when you want to recoup the isk lost in pvp.
Anyway, I use heavy missiles in pvp. HAMs, as I understand, aren't that much more powerful, and if you're comparing T2 heavy vs named HAM, it might be better just to use heavies.

2. Leave your PvE ship alone. Just buy a new Drake for PvP.
3. Heavy Missiles versus Heavy Assault Missiles: If you can use T2 Heavy Launchers but not T2 Heavy Assault Launchers, might as well stick with the Heavy Missile Launcher II's and go for firing at range. You will have to rely on other people to tackle for you though.

They are quite a bit more powerful when you're in range to use them, assuming equal launchers (ie: T2 to T2). But you're right to say that if he can't use T2 HAMs, he should stick with heavies.

Guys great feedback - I was veering to using the Heavy missiles as I have built the T2 missiles but obviously need competent gang to tackle
just to take it further I've used a passive tank drake in PvE and am comfortable with how o fit that - I know this may not b a straightforward question but are active hardeners a 'better' proposition - obviously beeing neuted would impact on that but if using Heavy missiles I shouldn't really be letting myself get into anyone's neut range who can hurt me ie specific neut cruiser and above - any thoughts or am I talking gibberish?

You shouldnt really be in range, some ewar, target painters, dampners, target disruption chould actually help your team more than a tank..especially if the other guy is webbed and scrammed down

First you possibly need to register on battleclinc and check the killboards, who are you fighting, what do they fly, where do they operate

Edited by: Agallis Zinthros on 08/09/2010 22:40:33 Add warp disruptor and MWD. Fit HAMs, rig and fit for highest possible ehp. Add on a damage control II. Have 2-3 BCUs in lows, rest is up to you but I would recommend mobility (nano).
EDIT: I don't fly drakes. It's not piracy, its surprise PVP. |

Don't ever purger rig your drake for pvp, take out all shield power relays/shield rechargers. A drake needs 2 to 3 BCS to do decent DPS, if your fleet is all close range gank, you might as well use heavy assault missiles over heavy missiles to do more DPS to contribute. Some people overtank their drakes, bring some utility, a point and MWD are a MUST. Tracking disruptors and sensor damps are great help for your gang, you may not see it, but that battleship shooting your friend might be hitting for a lot more if they weren't tracking disrupted, or that hostile logi at range might lose its lock due to a sensor damp, allowing your gang to kill more without primaries being repped, or a vagabond strays too close and you scram/web it, allowing your gang to bang it.

Ahh thanks for that - just the sort of ideas I was looking for as too often it's tank and some gank or reverse - have to do some looking at EFT but that look like a goer

Hmmm.
*shrug*
1. Learn how to do basic pvp on the test server.
2. One station in every constellation has all prices set to 100isk for everything including implants. Go to town. Buy stuff by the boatloads. Pvp on the cheap to your hearts content.
3. Once you figured out what ships you like and how you like them fitted on the test server, then you should shift to Tranquility and pvp there.
Though I enjoy pvp on the test server occasionally just for the hell of it.

I had a lot more than 3m SP in gunnery before I started PvP'ing. People come to PvP when they're ready for it, and many after they've secured themselves a solid income so they don't have to worry about their losses.
