I have a ATI Radeon 9700 PRO based system, and my machine hard locks (I have to turn it off) whenever I:
Target a NPC for the first time Try to show info on an item for the first time Go to the character selection screen for the first time
Basically anything that makes me load a portrait locks my machine up hard. Once the portrait is in cache, I am OK, but if I delete my cache, I have to start all over again. After deleting cache, it takes 4 - 6 tries to even get past the character selection screen, all I see are "!" in the character windows, then the game locks up. After 4 - 6 tries, I get character portraits and I am OK. I have already lost 3 ships to being out exploring, new NPC comes within range, I auto target it, I lock up with an "!" in the target box, come back in a pod... I can only assume this is somehow related to how the 9700 card blits the bitmap to the Direct Draws surface... Is there a workaround at all for this. I like Eve, but I haven't cold booted my machine this much in the past 18 months as I have since I bought Eve 3 weeks ago.

I have the exact same card and the exact same problem. So it seems to be consistent with the hardware.

You can choose to not load portraits at all. This will atleast keep you in-game until you find a better solution.

I have Radeon 7500 and mine does the same thing. No one seems to give comprehensive answers. Im also a little sick of turning my machine off
Often when mine locks up I can see some desktop icons 'poking' through the eve screens and I have to turn off. So HMV consider Andy Williams and Dean Martin to be "easy listening" do they? Tell that to my mate Dave, he's been deaf for 20 years.

Yep - ATI 9700 Pro - exact same lockup problems. Someone just posted in another thread to try the drivers at:

I will try them when I get home...
