First time it happened to me and I thought I'd share in case some others haven't heard about it. Not sure how common it is.
I was Level 4 missioning and I see this "ninja" pop into my space in a Coercer. I'm in the second pocket and left a ton of wreckage in the first. So he starts salvaging while I'm fighting and I'm like, cool, no problem, since I was being a lazy ass that day and didn't feel like salvaging/looting. He can have it all.
Something stupid came up in RL so I had to warp out and dock in the middle of the lazor fest, thinking the ninja would do the same.
Come back to kill off the remaining baddies in the mission and was wondering if the ninja made it out ok, but there was his wreck! I fly close to it to see what's inside. Sure enough, a little salvage, not bad, might as well loot it.
But wait, said my highly-unhealthy-paranoid side, what if he's still here in a cloaked PvP ship? Hmm, better align at top speed, loot, and then warp. I do so without incident since it was quick, make it to station and hang out while doing other RL stuff.
Come back after aggro timer is up finish the mission and notice the ninja in local. I message him, to offer my condolences on the loss of his salvage ship and to ask why he didn't warp out since I killed the only scrambler. Turns out that the loss was planned! He let the NPC's kill him so that I would later loot his wreck! He came back in a cloaked ship, with a Tengu close by to finish off my BS! He even mentioned seeing me align-loot-warp, lol.
Unhealthy paranoia ftw!!
Yes, I know about extending aggro by shooting wrecks. I don't think I had any near the end since they timed out, or else it would have been a long mission.
Fail-ninja's are not always fail, as I almost learned the hard way. ____________________

Every time I doubt my actions, I think, this is Eve. But I was given the title Mr. Paranoid |

That's about the only way to survive in the wonderful lag world of Eve Online. Props for being a paranoid mofo (In a good way) I have never had a signature before, is it any good? |

Ha! Good luck, I imagine it takes a lot of patience and resources (intentionally getting your ship exploded). But then again, not everyone's a paranoid mofo like me... ____________________

soo what items did you take?
I hope it was nothing under the value of at least 10 mil.
That would just be dumb..
Wait.... let me see if I understand wut u did. You risked your mission running ship for some salvage beams maybe a tractor or two and some worthless salvage.
Smart....

I am very disappoint. Go back and re-read. But if you dont:
Not exactly 10 million, maybe about 5 million iirc. I just remember seeing a ton of armor plates so it seemed worthy to loot with no risk (remember, I didn't know his strategy at this moment or the fact that he was there cloaked and watching).
I wasn't risking my mission ship for anything because I hadn't talked to him yet to learn his most awesome strategy. But luckily, I was suspicious enough to align-loot-warp (remember, unhealthy paranoid mofo here). Looking back, I wouldn't risk doing it again now that I know the tactic (even align-loot-warping doesn't guarantee success). I learned of his routine while talking to him well after aggro timer was up.
The uber-glorious mission running ship was an insured tech 1 BS, so at worst it would have been an inexpensive lesson learned. ____________________

Extraction of more annoyance would have been to ignore the bait. Perhaps sit next to it for 5-10 minutes acting as though you might take it.
but whatever..
