Hi, i have bought a galente catalyst destroyer to try out on my lvl 2 agent missions. Didnt have the skills for cruiser yet and thought a destroyer would be step up from frigates. My doubt is concerning weapons and modules, i¦m not sure at this point if i should go with rails for long range or blaster for close range. The ships speed is not that great, and afraid it cant handle close range fighting that well, would apreciate ny opinions on this. thx

Best way to loose a new ship is by getting too close to the rats.
Start with long range stuff. 125 and 150mm rails.

Catalyst romps all over most level 2 missions with just a buncha 125mm rails in the highslots. Leaves plenty of room (CPU/PG) for good complimentary modules and speed.
NC's right, though, kill your enemy before they get close, and pace them if you can. I know its a gallente ship, but I wouldn't try blasters on it until I had Destroyers 4 or 5, and even then I think you'd have a half shredded vessel by the time you finished everyone off closing range with them.
Even used a Catalyst with all stock(non-named) gear to clean out level 3 complexes, albeit just rogue drone ones.

I've been doing level 2 kill missions lately in a Catalyst, I've only been playing for a month so skills are far from uber at this point. I dont know if I'd try blasters, the ship is pretty fragile and I'd think you'd have trouble closing in with enough ship left to finish the fight.
Current fitting is
2x150 Carbide Rails 5x125 Rails (Mixed, 2 Carbide, 3 Regular) Small Nos 1Mn AB Cap Recharger Sm named armor repair Reactor Control Unit 1 Power Diag 1
Generally I dont get close enough to use the nos, but its saved my butt just enough times to merit keeping it.

DON"T USE BLASTERS WITH CATALYST! YOU'll END UP DEAD! nuff said. Anyway as for fitting.
Hi's: 8x125mm rail named if possible
Med's: 2xcap recharger, 1x small cap. batt. 2
Low's: 1 small named armor rep, 2x hardners.
Carry 3 ammo types: Tungsten (for it's range) Lead (for around 10k) Am (for when they get in your face.)

Also consider using a MicroAux Power Core instead of the Reactor control unit. I think the cutoff point for getting the most out of small power grids with a micro aux is 66. Or something close to that. Give it a try.

Thx very much everyone for all the info on the best setups, its helping me have a feel for the ship and organizing wich skills to train next, so i can use the equipment mentioned. Thinking on investing my skills on smaller turrets and speed upgrades, liking these smaller ships alot, maybe in far future will get interceptor or covert ops ships.

It's actually 100 + (5 * Engineering Skill Lvl). If you have engineering 5, an RCU will only give more PG when you have > 125 (ie Cruisers and above). With RCUII, it's 67 PG with Engineering 0 and 84 PG and above at Engineering 5, where they become more useful than MAPCs.

oh, right. RCU 2 not RCU 1. Does anyone still use those old things? :)
Still, your forumula may be off a bit. Maybe the skill bonus is calculated after the module bonus and not before? The cutoff point appears to be 67 and not 84 w/engineering lvl5.
base Catalyst PG = 60 base Catalyst PG at Eng lvl 5 = 75 w/MAPC = 87.5 w/ RCU2 = 86.25
so for Coercer and Thrasher use the RCU2
and for Comarant and Catalyst use the MAPC*
*I've only bothered to test with the Catalyst. YMMV.

I use a Catalyst to do the drone complexes. I can solo up to the 3/10 ones with no trouble at all. I've never used one in normal space though (wouldn't want to TBH) but in deadspace with drones, it's a monster.
High: 7 x ion blasters (1 named I think), micro SB
Med: T2 AB, Cap recharger
Low: named small armour rep, mag stab, PDU
2 x hornet
After a run last night where things got a bit close with 17 drones on me, I'm thinking of dropping the SB and maybe a gun plus the PDU to fit a 200mm nanofiber.
Don't forget the drones! You can fit 2 lights or 1 med. Think of them as extra damage or disposable armour and use them like that.

Rails are much more practical, but I have to admit using the blasters is fun.
Kill the enemy, and break their toys. |

Yeah, drones are there to be used, but usually everything's dead before the drones even wake up after launch. Against bigger targets, I use my drones as decoys. Warriors if you want them to survive (really freakin' fast things) or Acolytes if you don't care and just want to compliment your thermal/kinetic damage with some EM.
I'd generally save the 'leet gear for better ships than a destoyer as they're pretty fragile, at least until you get a really good feel for not losing them. 8 high slots per ship will chew through the named guns really dang fast when you're just learning.
