I'd just like some simple, understandable explanation as to why standings don't seem to have any connection to logic whatsoever.
For instance:
I joined Amarr Militia December last year and plex-*****d and mission-*****d my way up to +10.0 standing with 24th Imperial Crusade, but my Amarr faction standing never went above +2.0.
My Caldari State standing is +4.81 which again makes no sense as I've never done missions for any Caldari corporation or entity or whatever.
My Gallente standing is +1.79 which makes no sense as I've killed my fair share of them and haven't run a mission for any Gallente entity in over a year.
My Ammatar Mandate standing is +6.47--who the **** are these people even?
How can my Caldari and Ammatar standings be so high yet my Amarr standing -- the only faction I've ever actually done anything for (AND QUITE A ****ING LOT FOR) won't ****ing budge? It's done nothing but gone down (from the very small number of Amarr militia I've killed since joining) despite the fact I've slaughtered tons of Minmatar and have done dozens upon dozens of militia missions. Why doesn't this make sense????????? ___________________________________________ The Hero of Kamela The Terror of Tararan The Executioner of Ezzara |

That is indeed bizarre. Your Caldari State standing would make sense if your Amarr faction standing were higher.
But its not.
So it doesn't.
Very strange.

R-click a standing > Show transactions. You can view info on each transaction to see where your standings changes are coming from. You might find some useful info in there.

The Amarr people are very conservative and religious. They punish little boys with dirty mouths.

Faction standing increase is based on the nature of your storyline agent, not your mission agent. Whenever you get a storyline, usually the closest storyline agent in that region is selected as the one offering the mission.
I dare say wherever you do your missions, there are caldari in the region, and your nearest storyline agent appears to be one of them.

Mystery explained! I feel a bit embarrassed I didn't work that one out for myself.

The earliest "transaction" shown is 2010.05.14, only 5 months ago (which makes no sense, why doesn't it go back further?), and they're ALL negative transactions -- not a single increase in standing shown despite the tons of faction warfare missions I've done.
Also, I've not done highsec missions for a long, long time.
So how can I increase my standings? I wanted to do some Amarr Cosmos missions but my standings are too low. ___________________________________________ The Hero of Kamela The Terror of Tararan The Executioner of Ezzara |

one word derived standing !

if you dont do storyline missions your standing will never go up , and i see you missioned for minmatar thats why your amarr standing is low

So the best way to raise my Amarr Empire standing is to... do missions for Ammatar or Caldari corps?
This makes sense how? ___________________________________________ The Hero of Kamela The Terror of Tararan The Executioner of Ezzara |

I don't think you fully understood the mechanic. The most direct way to raise amarr faction standing is doing missions for amarr, with an amarr storyline agent nearby. While doing this you will, at first, derive more Ammatarr Mandat standing, up to a point where your amarr faction standing will overcome the ammatarr one, because derived standing by doing it for XY is limited to the amount in the first table.
If you like to think of it this way in an attempt to explain the effect..ammatarr mandate is easier to impress by missions for amarr because it's against the same enemies and is also smaller, but in the long run it won't raise to the top just by working for amarr.
Again, faction standing is gained by storyline missions, it doesn't matter who you do missions for, it matters who your closest storyline agent would be from that place.
In nearly all the cases the storyline agent matches faction of the nearby normal agents in a region. Chances are you encountered some freak coincidence constellation there.
