Has anyone had any success running EVE from a usb drive lately?
I have installed EVE directly to my 8gb usb drive, and have created a batch file to change the default location of the local settings directory.
Right now, that batch file reads as follows:
set USERPROFILE=E:\EVE\TQ\SyradiMogoton Start "eve" "E:\EVE\eve.exe" exit
When I run that, the EVE splash screen shows for 10 seconds or so and then disappears, leaving the ExeFile.exe process hanging. The TQ\SyradiMogoton directory is populated with a system of empty folders that match (in name) the settings folders that have been created on my desktop machine.
Any advice would be awesome.

I have been running EVE directly from an USB stick for a couple months now, never had any problems.
I do not modify the USERPROFILE variable, however if I do, the startup fails similarly to your description. So the question is: Why do you modify it in the first place?

Not sure if it still works but you used to be able to add /end /LUA:OFF to the target box to save the cache in the eve folder.
Also make sure whatever computer your playing on has the latest directX

Hi OP, this is indeed how you used to be able to do it.

Hopefully it still works.

I'm hoping to save all my in-game settings on my USB drive, rather than locally on the machine. That said, at this point I'd rather just have a working client. I'm going to try directly copying the EVE directory from my desktop at home and pasting it onto the USB drive and see if it helps at all.

I haven't had any success with that so far, but I'll try again. Thanks.

What I do is; simply copy the entire ccp folder from the program files to the flash drive. I than run the .exe file from that folder on any computer I wish. It will ask you for a directx file. You can download that file from the net and pop it the eve folder. The other option is search your computer for it. (The net is easier and faster.)
No short cuts and really no editing needed. Just run the eve client directly from a portable hard drive/ usb drive. There really is no reason to install the eve client to the usb drive its self.
Notes: 1.You need to have that directx file or the client will not load. Keep in mind that doing things this way will not allow you do any updates. I am going on the guess that you are using a work/school computer and you have no admin rights.
2.When doing up dates all you will need to do, is copy and replace all of the files after every patch. If that doesn't work (I have only seen one case where it didn't) simply delete and replace the entire folder.
3.This also works for the test server. Just keep in mind that you need to create a short cut inside that folder, with the IP address of the test server. This will than forward the client to that server. Keep in mind that if you do not have admin rights on the computer you are gaming on you cannot up date the client.
I hope this answers your question.
Best of luck,

Okay, I copied the EVE folder directly from my home desktop onto my USB drive this time. Still no luck. When you say it will ask me for a directx file, do you mean it will display an error dialogue of some sort and prompt to locate the file, or will this just be an error message on the LogServer?
I'm on a school computer right now, anticipating a directx issue, but right now I'm not sure it's even getting that far. I tried this last night on a friend's laptop (90% sure he has the latest version of directx installed), and I was running into the same problem.
Thanks for the help!

You need the latest version (or a new enough version anyway) of DirectX 9, which isn't properly updated on Vista/Win7 by default. You either need to take the latest directx redistributables from microsoft, or at least run the EVE repair tool (which also does some dx9 trickery).

well, i would first install it on the flashdrive by default, no copying folders. then run it on a computer you have eve on, then on a random computer.

Syradi,
Don't copy the EVE folder inside the CCP folder. Copy the entire CCP folder. If you just do the EVE folder you're missing a section of the directory and it will fail to recognize the file path.
Hope this clears that up Abyssal Heavy Industries Amarr Branch Manager and Senior Recruiter |
