The other day someone had posted a question about so-and-so Caldari ship. I got on Evemon to look at the ship just to see its attributes and stuff, but then I looked at its picture and was like o m g. This was doubly reinforced when I then looked at my corresponding race's ship. It looked like a pooped upon can opener for the blind.
I then compared several Caldari mainstay ships to all races, and found them to be 10-20x more cool looking than their competitors. Why the hell did the game makers make the worst race for PVP ships look that much better than everyone else?

Edited by: Culmen on 16/09/2010 21:30:36 I suggest you get your eyes checked. Of the caldari ships, only the Scorpion, Ferox and Heron look good. And the scorpion just got a redesign from vomit inducing to dead sexy.
Let see....
The Moa Looks like the unholy union of a swan and a toaster.
The Raven Looks like a spastic went ape **** with the extrude tool on the model.
The Blackbird The only thing good that can be said about the ship's appearence is that it looks like a Borg Type 03 starship. The borg are not known for asthetics. and further more why do i even need a sig? |

idk man, most of their main combat classes look a lot better than my (minmatar) race. they look like something a spaceship should look like.
Btw this is my question-asking alt, in case the portrait confuses anyone.

We really have to give the Minmatar a break considering they are still utilizing Duct Tape to hold their ships together, it really seems to be a matter of functionality versus style. Also, if we are going to talk about weird looking ships we certainly need to mention the Thorax hull, much less a pink Deimos...

These sort of disagreements occur often, because in truth all the EVE ships are ugly and it requires tremendous stretch of the imagination to think otherwise. Imaginations stretch in very different directions!
That said, obviously you are wrong because Amarr ships look the best

If you read the race backgrounds in the Backstory link to the left, you'll see that each race has its own aesthetics:
- Caldari like high-tech and electronic warfare; their ships are the closest to what I consider a "military" look (all sharp edges and battleship grey paint).
- Gallente are supposedly all into "organic" shapes and most likely to come up with silly shapes such as birds, fishes, or amoebas.
- Minmatar are supposedly poor (or in a hurry to cobble something together to use it for revenge already) so their ships are all about exposed frames and rust and duct-tape.
- Amarr prefer gold hues and arcs or semi-circles combined with flat surfaces; look at their religious symbols.
Trends exist for the pirate factions too - most rogue drones are insect-like, there's a whole line-up of ships based on blood (red splotches of paint) and spikes, Concord likes the stainless-steel look, and so on.

The Imicus...tell me about it. God damn that thing is ugly, it's a bent slab of metal with a kickstand. Given the bonuses at least it's only good for probe scanning. How'd you like to show up to a fight in that thing. -Makbure RPTNA Avenger Raptor Navy |

The Raven is a Sexy Bird! And stop ragging on the Moa it is beautiful, now only if they could un**** it and the Eagle as a sniper and make the Caracal/Cerb fit HAM's

every race has their pretty and ugly hulls. The new scorpion model is very cute but otherwise the caldari have more than their fair share of mingers.
Amarr get the Abaddon which just looks badass, the Arbitrator and it's t2 variants are kinda cool looking, as is the malediction (executioner with a bunch of guns and thrusters stuck onto the sides and a cooler paintjob...so cute XD). But they also get some terrible ****e like the Apoc (did the amarr navy run out of money when they were building the underside?), the omen with it's random tumor on the side and, well all the frigates other than the punisher.
Caldari ships are generally terrible, they look like an explosion in a lego factory (specifically most of the cruisers). The new scorpion hull is sexay and the rokh looks kinda cool in its own way but that's about it.
Gallente ships are too lumpy for my tastes. The myrmidon looks like a seahorse which is kinda cool, the Brutix is just a fat thalidomide owl. Gallente probably get the prettiest BSes though. Mega and Hyperion look mean, kinda makes up for the dominix looking like it was congealed rather than built. Thorax, Atron and their t2 versions have that whole club foot thing going on, dont like that at all, but the proteus has some quite pretty iterations if you pick the right subs. Also Nyx. Best looking SC by far.
Minmatar are a pretty mixed bag. Probe is a shed, Vigil is just sheet iron with a thruster strapped to it. Rifter looks hard in its rusty sort of way. Thrasher <3, Stabber is awesome if you don't mind your ship looking like a meccano model of a **** and balls. Rupture, lol its a triangular prism with an erection. Hurricane = sexiest BC by miles. The battleships are generally awful with the exception of the Maelstrom, the whole sails thing is oddly pleasing on the eye. Also Naglfar :)

Amarr ships with impossible physics looks so stupid.... like the guardian or the calamari... I mean: How the heck are they supposed to fly? Having the thrusters the way they are placed woould make em spin around like crazy.
And the maller looks unbelievable too....
Stuff like that just annoys me... ____________________________________ touch the legacy code, touch the legacy code!!! |

I'm with the OP, I love the looks of a good chunk of Caldari ships, I don't know what the functions of most of these ships are yet, but this is my aesthetic taste on a good junk of them:
The Kestrel frame is incredible, and I'm a fan of the Merlin body as well. The Drake and the Cormorant styles also are some very cool, elongated frames that just look menacing. The Cruisers are universally terrible looking, but the Scorpion and Raven make up for that in spades. As for capital ships, the Chimera looks like a death machine, the phoenix is pretty plain, the wyvern is TERRIBLE, and the leviathan, well that things looks imposing.

LEAVE MY ASYMMETRIC SHIPS ALONE!!
I love my Chicken with a briefcase (Moa)
I adore my Lego brick hull (Blackbird) + Rook go faster stripes lego brick hull.
EVE is not Star Trek / Star Wars / every other Sci-fi where every ship is symmetrical.
We are different for a reason.
And that is one of the reasons why I love EVE .

I do recall that Star Wars does have asymmetrical vessels. I don't remember a lot about Star Trek(stopped watching somewhere in the middle of Voyager series).
The science fiction spaceships for the most part start off low-budget and it's easier for the tech dpt to cobble something together asymmetrical, and seemingly practical, than spend a lot of time and make it look pleasing to the eye. At least til the budget for it comes in. The exception I can recall is early Star Trek where they did a fairly decent job being more on the looks.
I love it about eve that they do change the styles for the different factions/races instead of being cookie cutters on a vast scale.

It's all up to personal preference. Personally, I don't like most of the caldari ships, but I love the look of minnie ships, particularly the much maligned Tempest. Why the hell would space faring ships that never see an atmosphere bother with symmetry or aerodynamics? The ship designs really communicate the story of each race. Minmatar ships remind me of rafts and primitive boats, and caldari ships look like calculators.

With the gas clouds in space that we have to fly through quite frequently an asymmetical ship would be impossible to navigate. If we ever want to fly through atmospheres, most EVE ships wouldn't manage.
Next to that it's very unrealistic that all shipwrights of all races suddenly started to build asymmertical ships, it's very unrealistic. If only one or two corps would do it, it would be far more believable.

The Caldari have their share of butt-ugly ships to balance things out. Bantam, Kestrel (way too asymmetric), Osprey (ugh), Badger&Badger MkII (both look like fat slugs), etc.
