Speaking of True Blood, some of the vampires over there have a wonderful attitude:

Sinister Dextor... That's 1) overanalyzing and 2) pretentious. People aren't that complicated.
It's a simple case of popular myth being popularized. Vampire movies and stories have been extremely popular ever since Stoker's book.

That was one of the BEST SCENES EVER in any vampire flick, movie,b movie, reel, series or anime I have ever seen.
I have been a fan of Vampires since I discovered the 70's Christopher Lee's Vampire Movies and later the anime Vampire Hunter D back in the day
You see, Christopher Lee shaped my whole idea of Vampires way before Sparkly Cullens.... and the Vampire Genre is not "all of a sudden" fashionable. It has been on and off the mainstream but always alive.
I like them for what they represent, pure undiluted evil and animalistic urges of sadistic orgies of frenzied lust. No more no less, the Vampire made fashionable of late as someone else pointed out, the "Anne Ricean" vampire, with its whole "mystique" of seduction was simply the vampire for generation X'ers of the day. As new generations rise they mold Vampires to their current standpoint. Sterile overromanticized vampires of today are simple mainstream ways of selling vampires to the younger generation, and on and on, vampires in the future will probably be transparent and filled with blood as if they were made of crystal , yet they will keep sucking the blood out of people and Snarl around with pointed fangs.
So if all of a sudden you mean since Bram wrote and published his novel, yep, all of a sudden for the past 113 years.
True Blood is the evolution of several (not as succesful) TV series of Vampires, and with the Edward phenomenon most people flock to the concept.
And no Zombies are very much still alive, they simply lurking in the edges for the moment. Yeah, I'm a Zombie fan too, Fulci permaburned my mind with this scene when I was 6 years old.
Damn I love horror movies!!! ---

WTF happened that they got so popular all of a sudden?
here's a hypothesis: vampires correlate to some sort of archetype that exists in people's subconscious it is not limited to vampires ... ever wonder why so many stories and movie out there tend to involve same type of characters?
