Correct me if I'm wrong, but tracking speed is a type of "to-hit" mechanic? I have a meta 1 painter but don't have the open medium spot for it. I'm using a optical tracking computer with the script I could probably switch out, would +26.25% signature radius bonus be better over +tracking speed? This is going on a Megathron with large hybrid rails.
Or are these two pieces of equipment totally different in the way they work? -Makbure RPTNA Avenger Raptor Navy |

Edited by: AtheistOfFail on 21/09/2010 04:31:14 to be honest, they both do the same thing: Make it easier to hit a target. For a sniper megathron, the 70km target painter may not help a lot at higher distances. For up-close it might. Best test: Put on one at a time and warp to a belt and test it out.

Sounds like a plan, I'm using Antimatter charges in those rails and manuever in to about 31Km for optimal. Maybe the painter is better. -Makbure RPTNA Avenger Raptor Navy |

The main advantage of a Target Painter is that it will benefit anybody shooting at the target: especially useful in gangs.
The main advantages of a Tracking Computer is that it can switch to boosting range, and does not need to be reactivated for each target: especially useful in PvE, or long range setups.

There's significant differences.
A target painter won't help if you're tackled by a fast interceptor and your battlecuiser's turrets can't keep up with tracking. A tracking computer may enable you to hit it.
Target painters basically make your target bigger so it's more likely that you'll hit it (and as said before, it help for everyone who's shooting at that target). Depending on what script, a tracking computer enables you to hit from great range or better hit fast targets.

Edited by: Kravick Drasari on 21/09/2010 09:51:08 If you're using drones a target painter will also help your drones hit that target better. It also makes missiles hit harder too. A tracking computer will only help your ships chance to hit and only works with guns. However, its typically acknowledged that a tracking computer is going to work for you better if you're using guns than a target painter would. Target painters are typically only used in gangs or when you're using missiles.
That said, a target painter in conjunction with a tracking computer is awesome sauce. But this really only happens in gangs where one person sacrifices a mid slot for the betterment of the fleet. Multiple target painters do stack, but are subject to the same diminishing returns as other modules (after 3 it becomes pointless). --- My cat Putter approves of this post. |

You need a tec 2 painter and the painter spec skill or a tracking comp will be better.

This is simply false.
A target painter will provide as good or better bonus (depending on your skills) to tracking than a tracking computer of the same meta level.
There is no difference in effect between increasing your target's signature and increasing your turret's tracking, but the effect a target painter will be increased by the Signature Focusing skill, the tracking computer's bonus will not.
In the situation described by Jenny Hawk, neither a target painter nor a tracking computer is likely to be sufficient, but the target painter will be slightl more effective.
