My only issue with the wikia site is its tendency toward unsecure advertisements. I've been attacked through wikia's ads twice now. Many other sites with advertising don't seem to have this issue, but of course, many do. Wikia has a HIGH rate of traffic, so for it to not be more secure than most of the internet makes for a poor showing. And also gives malware writers a boost, by it being such a vector, at least in the past. I've stayed away from Wikia for several months, but if it's boosting its security, I'd like to become a visitor to it again, for the great information there.
And I do use an anti-virus product, which kept the attack through the Wikia ads from succeeding, but I don't want to test this repeatedly to see when the malware will beat the anti-virus development team. Learning... |

ad blockers block the ads from showing, but they are still loaded. if they contain harmful viruses or malware, they will still load. unless you have chrome and adblocker, in which case, thanks to a change in the webkit trunk, implemented by apple, it wont even load.
as for you not using anti-virus, that is so dumb (que bed intruder song guy). go download avast or something, anything is better than nothing (except for mcafee).

You can't get a virus or malware simply from viewing an advertisement so stop being so ignorant. Want to know what the best anti virus is? Common sense. I don't use an anti virus and I've never been infected before.

Pretty much the same. I've had a few minor infections, but it isn't even a big deal to me since I wipe my hd every year or so.

Norton is a decent antivirus, even more so if you use the Norton Internet Security with manual firewall settings. I wouldnt call it the best antivir software, but it easily gets into top 5. The only downside is the higher than average resource usage, but if your machine can handle its worth it imo. The older versions before 2009 were really just crap, but ever since they switched to a completely new core engine, it is much lighter, faster and reliable. I dont understand where this negative feedback to norton is coming from. I even remember reading an article from a website that does quarterly comparisons of antivirus programs - and norton was one of the best results.

What is the OP talking about?
http://wiki.eveuniversity.org/Main_Page is NOT Wikia.
Not only that, but there is NO (dynamic) advertising on that page.
I think the OP is advised to download some anti-advertising cleaners (adaware etc) to remove junk from his computer.

Because it doesn't work, and in many cases actually makes your computer stop working properly. The only people who use Norton (and Mcafee) are people who don't know any better. Sadly these people are suckered into buy a product they think works but all it does is make their computer slower.

What kind of adblocker would that be?

Huh? I'm pretty sure the stuff blocked by NoScript/FF won't load. Do you have some sort of proof or do you just make it up as you write it? :)

AVs are overrated. Common sense is a much better protection. But for those who don't have it, AVs offer at least some basic protection. You'll definitely want some sort of firewall though. Preferably not just a software solution. - Don't let the trolls stop you from giving a helpful reply. Troll or no troll.

Raises hand...
I'm also not stupid enough to allow anything to execute on my computer via the tubes. Pretty simple...
1. don't click on links in e-mails. 2. use a web browser that asks if you want to execute code on your computer (i.e.: are you sure you want to run this program). 3. don't click on advertisements, and if (I dont use no-script) they do send a js popup, ctrl+alt+del, close FF, relaunch. 4. don't be stupid and fall for the "your computer needs to be checked for viruses" popup.
On adblock: It blocks ads for known ad sites or from custom filters you set. If the site isn't in the lists which you subscribe to, the ad won't be blocked. Many sites which push the viruses or keyloggers are one time deals that are hosted randomly and circumvent adblock.
Lastly,
Wiki sites are never "safe" as they can be edited publicly. always use the navigation bar on the bottom of your browser to verify that the link is valid before clicking on it. Alternatively, you could copy link location, paste in a new window to see it better.
EDIT: PS - in the event you do catch a bug... the best program to use to get rid of it is Malwarebytes. google it.
if you're on Vista/7, MS's new built in virus removal is pretty comprehensive and does a very good job of cleansing. however, since removal of a virus is only as good as the detection software, using multiple tools is a good idea.
clamwin is another very good/lightweight program.
I don't like: AVG Avast Norton McCafee Comodo ZoneAlarm
they're all fat, bloated pieces of junk that take 2x the resources to run than should be necessary to get the job done.

Quoting that you have confirmed you don't use common sense.
More seriously, many users... no, most users are ignorant to the fact that "viewing" an add won't infect them. It's the end user's actions after the ad appears which installs the virus on their computer.
This is why when someone asks me how they got infected and I give them the sad news they did it to themselves, they get insanly defensive. Blame the computer, or norton for not telling them that clicking [OK] 5 times to get rid of the popup thus installing that software would be bad.
anyone have that video of the help support guy who was playing halo and had to help the guy with his computer?
