So I have 13 mil sp, all learning skills at 4 or 5. I can use drones very proficiently but I'm not a fan of rails. I'm looking for what race would be preferable for the following activities. I'm thinking about going caldari, but I know there is an issue with caldari in pvp
I know caldari are best (prolly going tengu) for missioning, plexing, and wormhole exploring (maybe hitup a drake). My real question is is it worthwhile to go caldari for pvp warfare. Would a drake or raven be at all usefull in small gang warfare? Usefull in large fleet warfare?
And last question- is the caldari carrier useless compared to the other carriers? I havnt heard fantastic things about it's use infleet warfare (although I hear they are usefull for wormholes? |

Caldari is not bad for PVP, Drake is a great BC and BC is a very good shipclass to PVP with. You also got the recons, falcon and rook that are always welcome to any fleet and the basilisk and tengu is really great. Ravens work for a pos kill but thats about it. They don't have so many good PVP ships but what they have is very good.
But if i would choose a race to start with i think i would go with minmatar they got many really nice ships, and about PVE... any race can do that maybe not as good as Caldari but PVE is something you will get tired of very soon.

To be perfectly honest with you, at 13m SP you shouldn't be worried about using a carrier other than as a personal logistic tool to haul stuff around.
I suggest that you avoid crosstraining but if you must I'd go with either Amarr or Caldari. Both have plenty of ships that require relatively little SP to make good use of and do well in PvP aswell as PvE.
If you have no/little gunnery skills already I'd say go Caldari,
- that way you won't really have to bother with getting Heavy or Sentry drones anytime soon - you can hop right to Torps and Heavy Assault missiles (unlike t2 turrets, they need to be trained in size order) - navigation skills aren't as important in PvP since you'll probably be the slowest guy around anyway - you don't have to work up armor skills (armor compensation skills are quite tedious to do)

Minmatar, seriously.
I've flown just about every race and I've found minmatar are generally the most fun to fly. Alot of people say that training minmatar is too sp intensive. Thats true in a way, however you can focus on gunnery or missiles, armor tanking or shield tanking and still be very successful.
Armor tanking: rifter-->rupture-->hurricane-->tempest/typhoon shield tanking rupture/stabber--->hurricane/cyclone-->Tempest/Maelstrom
PVE Selectable damage types really give matar an edge. I run a paladin and a vargur and I'm using a vargur in most missions. (decent dps, very good tracking, also npc td's do not affect falloff so its a bit of a buff to some sansha missions). I dualboxed a 4 bcs raven and a maelstrom ratting guristas and the mael was much much more efficent. Also, the hurricane is arguable the best BC in game (although many ppl will say the drake is).
Now to your questions, the raven is pretty useless in fleet warfare due to slow missile flight time and low dps (cruise). In rr gangs it gets quite nice dps however most gangs are armor tanked in which case your better off with a typhoon.
The drake is quite nice for small roaming shield gangs, also its currently a bit of a fotm for fleet drake gangs. However there are other fleet situations where the drake is not well suited (some LR bc fleets etc).
The chimera isn't that great. Generally the archon and to a lesser extent the thanatos are the best carriers primarily due to most caps being armor tanked. I would even pick a nidhoggur over a chimera tbh. Having said that they arn't necessarily bad.
Caldari arn't "bad" at pvp, however most of their ships are primarily used in support (bbird, falcon/rook, scorp etc), its pretty easy to cross train to a drake (BC 5 is a must have for everyone and heavy missiles/ shield tanking take no time at all) therefore I wouldn't select the race your going to train based on one ship alone.

I started off gallente like you, and currently have around the same SP, however when i had around 7 million SP, i decided to cross train to Minnmatar, because i was joining faction warfare (the Amarr Ironically). While Minnie ships are skill intensive because they require good armor/shield tank skills as well as guns/missiles/drone skills. However most Minnmatar ships can be armor tanked quite well, and the missile slots, are IMO better off as neuts anyways. Additionally you get access to both the Angel and Serpentis pirate ships which are awesome. The Machariel makes a great mission ship (also amazing in pvp) and can be armor tanked as well as shield tanked.
Basically, IMO minnie gives you a lot of ships that are very fun to fly, and I havn't regretted cross-training for a second.

In my humble 0sec expirience -> drake rules both gang pvp and pve.
Ofc tengu is the king but costs like 20x drake does.
Be aware that "windrake" (80k+ EHP, 650 DPS HAM II passive tanked drake) - available to high skills pilot drake is the most cost efficient ship in the universe with a pricetag of measly 45M isk, T2 fit...
Only problem with caldari is -> they are rather slow and use missiles which are long range engagement weapons ... and windrake is not the "ill catch you" kind of ship. Therefore they arent really the best for quick solo "in ya face" encounters. For that u need short range big dps fast boats (like the ones minmatar provides).
But in small gangs with dedicated tacklers -> nothing beats a fleet of drakes.
Raven is a tin can compared to drake tank wise, costs 3x more then it and cant hit any regular pvp boat due to missile size (BC size and smaller). Ive flown raven a little and don see a point in it actually. Unless you do POS bashing or someone just caught a carrier and you want it popped...

I'd go for Amarr. Their ships are ok for PvE and they're the second best drone users. High in demand for fleet warfare and they have a few excellent t2 pvp cruisers. And their ships look best!

Here is the composition of one nulsec "small" skirmish, notice the number of Drakes on both sides: http://eve-kill.net/?a=kill_related&kll_id=7481565
A corpie is training for a Tengu after giving-up on a Legion for PvE. Meanwhile, I'm in a Tengu and heading for a Minmatar Typhoon for PvP (when I'm not in a Scorpion or Rook).
Another corpie has 102M SP so he can fy anything subcap.
There is no reason you can't train more than one race!

alright, so if i were to stay caldari, drake HAM passive would b good for some pvp in gangs. but not raven. and minimatar would b decent overal just skill intensive. gotcha. my only concern about minimatar is their carrier + t3 cruiser. especially about the t3 (which i 100% intened to fly and invest alot of money into one down the road). also how do the minimatar carrier and caldari carriers stack up?

Edited by: Florio on 26/09/2010 06:03:12 Hi Loompa. You can't go wrong training for heavy assault missile drake for pvp. Battlecruiser V is one of the best skills out there (if not the best), and t2 hams don't take long to train up for. Some minmatar setups use hams too. From there, t2 heavy missiles are pretty quick to get and that's you set for much pve.

Pvp wise:
- minmatar have fastest ships - plus they are easiest to cross train to because they can be both shield and armor tanked :) - plus they rule short range combat
- gallente kinda suck with rails and have slow armor tanked ships to go with highest ingame DPS dealing - blasters, which need to bounce of your ship before dealing it - fiddling with drones makes me sick so i stay out of gallente way
- drake is the thoughest BC ingame, HAM II 600 dps, 80k EHP drake is practically unbeatable 1v1, but its slow as hell and fast minma ship will prolly run from it - also - T2 hulls arent so suitable for short range PvP, but have the best ECM specialisation
- amar - never flown them, but i allways check my EM and therm damage before facing them. Like everyone does.
Now chose. Im myself - traning caldari and minmatar.
