I run a lot of missions. Lately, I have been trying to delve into industry.
My question is: would it be profitable to do some training in mining, work up to a retriever then Hulk for the sole purpose of mining out the Level 4s I run? Some missions have decent sized asteroid belts--I am not referring to 'mining missions,' but rather, kill missions with belts in them. I would also have to train up some better hauling skills to cart the ore around if the mission is a few jumps. And I would need to flesh out some refining skills...
One concern I have is that I would have to forgo the mission ISK bonus to strip mine the roids...so I start this process in the hole a bit.
Are there any pros and cons to this approach? Is this just a waste of skill points, or could this be reasonably profitable?

I'd say it would be a waste of time. Better off training to 100% reproc on mods and salvaging/looting all the wrecks in your mission for minerals. Also setup buy orders for reproc mods.. you'll find once you crunch the numbers to find best mods/regions, that it is the best way to aquire minerals.

If you're doing it for isk - waste of skillpoints.
If you're doing it because you want to mine - go nuts.

Mining out the belts in level 4 missions is not profitablenbecause (a) you are running level 4 missions anyway, why not just increase your DPS to finish them faster, and (b) the ores are mostly veldspar.
So as someone running level 4 missions, the time would be better spent blowing ships up, and as a miner you would be better off spawning Break Their Will and mining the scordite.

only if you realy REALY need veildspar.
and then you probably need to be realy realy crazy to do it anyway.

I've been running hundreds (literally) of level 4s recently (trying to get 5 toons up to level 4 R&D agents with different corps), and haven't bothered trying to mine any of them. I do loot/salvage them all though.
Many of the belts are scattered, and some are so far from the warp in point that you'd spend 30 minutes just trying to get your mining barge close enough (and then the same to get your hauler in).
If you have an alt though, he can follow you in after you've cleared the first room. Your main can complete and turn in the mission, but the room(s), 'roids and wrecks will remain until everyone has cleared out of the room(s). I've done that in the past when I've needed to bring back a hauler for the loot/salvage. Left the alt in there, turned in the mission then went back in the Badger to pick up the goodies. That way you still get your time bonus and can add some extra to your income. You'd still be better off either looting/salvaging everything, or just doing more missions, rather than trying to mine them. Maybe save the mining for those times when you don't have enough time to do a level 4, but could still whip out to a nearby belt and haul a few exhumer loads of ore (especially the kinds needed for the storyline missions).

Any such alt would be far better utilised as DPS support for your main. -- [Aussie players: join ANZAC channel] |

This.
I have a Hulk alt on another account and I tried having him follow my 4 runner. Moving along even at the blazing speed of 70m/s takes forever for it to get to the rocks several KM away from jump in points. Having to do it over and over again, forget it.
Better to just have the alt mine regular belts while you run 4's. ____________________

The missions where there are minerals better than what you would find in a typical .5 Belt are rare.
Not sure about all level 4s, but I think at most you may find some with Omber. Honestly, yes that is of value in say Caldari space, but most mining corps will take a day's journey to say Gallante or Amarr .5 systems and mine the omber in those belts.
I can think of one case where there is Gneiss in a level 4 mission, but in all honesty, the amount is minimal and not worth the time, especially since the mission's objective is to mine 47 units of Green something or other, which can be done in an Osprey in about 5 minutes, letting you blitz the mission extremely fast. Mining the rest would be a waste of time.

Edited by: Makko Gray on 24/09/2010 10:08:41 There are some missions worth mining if you're doing it because you want to mine, also you're less likely to get distrubed by griefers if mining in missions which makes jetcan mining more viable (unless you mission somewhere really stupid like dodixie or other systems where you get ninja salvagers and general mission griefers).
You'll want to look out for missions with belts that aren't gated really, and where you can warp to at distance or to bookmarks. Also you want to avoid mining omber wherever you find it as it isn't worth very much compared to other ores - Plagioclase, Pyroxeres and Kernite are your best bets.
Ultimately though mining is probably not going to pay as much as missioning and salvaging.

define 'worth it' i do occasionally mine mission belts but i took up mining/industry to diversify my portfolio. there's no guarantee that lvl 4s will always be an isk faucet. right now running missions is great isk. but i'm lazy and dont wish to manage 3-5 agents. if my agent gives me 2 crappy missions, i decline the 1st one and go mine for the evening. i know the income is less, but it's something different.

Pure isk/h - well high sec mining isn't worth it anyways. But some people like to mine. If you're not a miner anyways, you can always just have a miner in your corp warp to you when you clear the first room. He'll be happy to mine away in a belt that doesn't automatically get can flippers. and you'll have someone who can tell you if anyone ninja's in the mission on you.

Hmmmm.
1. If you're going to run missions then run missions and be dedicated to it. You'll pull more isk, faster and have more time to do other things.
2. If you want to mine then go whole hog. Nothing wastes more time than trying to solo mine veldspar in a hulk. If you're going to mine for any reason other than just goofing off then you should be mining in a mining gang with a director in an Orca.
And frankly goofing off in a hulk is a good way to get ganked.
3. If they change missioning so that it's no longer profitable then Eve as a whole has gone down the tubes and you should be looking at another game. This is because missions & ratting are the primary sources of isk in the game for the economy. Without missions and ratting the whole economy would pretty much seize up and come to a dribbling halt.

Thank you for the replies you all. I have learned a lot.
Although mining in missions is not terribly profitable, on occasion it does add a touch of diversity to the mission grind.
I jetcan the Ore up to about 19,031 m3, then grab a Badger II and take it back to station. Even with my skills, it does not take long.
Questions:
1. If I train up a Charon, can that be taken into Level 4 Missions that restrict ships? 2. Since I am solo mining missions as a hobby Is my best bet to train a Retriever (then Hulk) and fill up a Charon with Ore and take it back to station? Any suggestions on making this more efficient? I can fill up a Badger II with Ore pretty fast, so I was thinking a Charon would give me more space for a single trip AND allow me to get the mission timed bonus.

Mr. Palindrome,
A Charon can not pick-up or Jettison cans into space. You must be docked to do these with any type of freighter. If you are close enough to a POS you can move items out of your cargo hold into a station, additionally if you are close to a POS you can scoop a can but that is the limits of the freighter. CCP has done this to try and help the market. It keeps mining companies from dropping million of M3 of ore and throwing the economy out of parameters. I am not saying this still does not happen after large mining OPS but it helps. I hope this answers all your questions.
Very Respectfully, Drevinbro

Whoops. I did not know that. So a Bustard is about the best I can hope for? I will have to look into how much cargo I can squeeze out of the transport ship.
And since I am a newbie at this, is my solo plan sufficient? That is, mine with a Mining Barge or Exhumer into a jetcan and come back with an industrial or transport to stow the ore in station?
So far, mining is kind of a nice diversion.

Mr. Palindrome,
An Orca holds the most of any ship that can pickup cans, max of 100,000M3+ in cargo hold and 40,000M3 in Corp hangers. Additionally you can get Tractors with Bonuses.
Good Luck, Drevinbro
