Why is it that its this tragedy that people poor out thier hearts and pocket books to aid those in need?
There are millions suffering under tyranny, genocide and other natural disaster.
Dont get me wrong...I consistantly volunteer myself to help the community and those in need. And I ponyed up well over 600 dollars to get friends and family out of the countries in question who had lost loved ones and everything they own.
And I must congradulate CCP and each and every one of you who have donated at the time i posted this 6.5 thousand US dollars. But i am seeing such hypocracy that is almost sickening.
Because people die in this number EVERY day. And the public at large ignores it unless something as dramatic as the sea or volcanos decide to snuff out a few thousand people.

Edited by: Ghost Red on 31/12/2004 20:45:28 People only care about something if
(a) It interferes with their dinner time
or
(b) It will cost them money in the long term
The Tsunami disaster induced point (a) in most people because it was plastered all over the news when they sat down to eat. If you were to show American Petrochemical companies butt-raping third world countries and destroying the environment then point (a) would kick in, followed swiftly by point (b) so nothing would get done about it.
Tax dollars for teh win.

If you don't agree with the giving, don't give. Not everyone can afford to be charitable, I guess.

Death toll from tsunami disaster passes 120,000. I can't think of any event in *my life* time that has killed so many in one day.
That sets it apart enough for me.

40 times more than who died during the World Trade attacks.
It's even scarier when you think that this was a natural disaster. The land which gives us life can take it away so casually. That seems even more horrifying than the madness of a couple of terrorists with a pilots license.......

It is concidered the 'big killer', there hasnt been an earthquake like it in the last 70 years, and no other earthquake has killed as many people in such little time.
There has been no other incident (apart from a war ofc) that can compare to this disaster. The death-toll has reached 130,000 and is still climbing, estimates are now reaching 200,000+ by the end of this week while there are over 7,000,000+ people affected by this, homeless/hungry and thats just one country.
The UK Government has pledged 50,000,000 to the cause and the british people have raised 40,000,000 at the moment... this still isnt enough.
So please, dont say why this disaster, yes the twin towers was a disaster, but one which the american government could deal with, asia isnt as financialy stable to support this horrific disaster and needs help.
nuff said, donate please.

The problem is that we dont hear about most of the other horrible things that goes on. In the US you hear about a big disaster like this and people rally behind it. You dont hear about the genocide, starving, and raped that happens every day in some countries. Our media tries to make it look like the world is a wonderful place until something happens to an American. If a 20 US nuns got murdered in the Sudan then you would see an outcry of people wanting to help.
Its bull...I hate our media and most of the people in this country. Unless it involves themselves it doesnt matter.

Yes, it would be nice if every injustice, every suffering group, every disaster and epidemic tugged at every one of our heart strings throughout the world equally and that each and every one of us did something to help in every one of those instances.
That said, the fact that some disasters, because of thier sheer scope, cause more to decide to do something to help than typically respond to the more...daily...dramas that surround us shouldn't cause anyone to be "sickened".
Some people rarely step out of thier comfortable world to understand the hardships much of the world endures. If I were one of those, and this time I found it in me to donate, and found myself confronted by someone such as yourself using the opportunity to critisize me for not doing something about all the other problems in the world, my first reaction would be to think "@#$@#1 you then!, I won't do a damn thing next time."
People that decide to take advantage of someone falling into the charitable spirit to use as an opportunity to shame those people is what sickens me...

What the euro and canadian players need to realise is that the U.S media is very self centered and rarely puts genocide of mass proportions in the news, plus the U.S. War department pulled out off Rawanda due to public pressure AFTER a few dead U.S. Marines were dragged through the streets and mutilated on TV. America is petrified of getting into another Vietnam. This is why the Kosovo war was conducted in the manner it was. Also people fail to realise that to do that war in Kosovo we used literally ALL our tomahawk crusie missles and heavy surface penatrating ordanace, to rebuild our ammo supply we had to dig into our stock pile of arms and use old free fall Iron bombs then modify them to meet current standards and regulations. To build our vaunted bunker busters we had to cut up barrels from old battleships and use them. We went to these extents just so we could keep our troops from going into battle like Vietnam again. So the fear of a strong public backlash for going into a war like that has kept us from doing this, till recently. Now we just attack whoever Bush is scared of this year.

Edited by: MooKids on 01/01/2005 00:09:12 It is because it is a hot news item right now. Nothing really big going on in the Western world, so might as well report that. If something happened to a major Western nation at the same time where there was a major loss of life, even on a smaller scale, it would be considered "more important". Really important if it involved Americans. Hey, maybe that is why this tsunami is getting so much coverage.
I am not blaming the people, I am blaming the media. No longer about news, just about the ratings.
EDIT: For reasons like that, I don't bother with the news anymore. The only news I bother watching is the Daily Show on Comedy Central. They tell more truth on there than most major news organizations do. Speaking of which, if you get the chance to read America: The Book, by Jon Stewart, I highly suggest the chapter on media coverage. Very interesting. -------------------------------- CCP can patch away bugs, but they can't patch away stupidity. |

We pulled out of Somalia (not Rwanda) after losing 2 Black Hawks and 19 Army Rangers (not Marines). It wasn't just the fact that Americans died, but the lack of any real plan (by the U.S. or the U.N. to reastablish order in Somalia). In the end, the Administration couldn't really explain why we were there. And the decision not to send troops into Bosnia was made by both the U.S. and its NATO partners in Europe.
People everywhere do give to charity all of the time. What's so hypocritical about giving more for a disaster of this magnitude?

sorry I was just 9 when that happended, sorry for getting some of the particulars wrong. Well Somalia and Rawanda are neighbors and like Vietnam we had NO plan which was my point, but in all honesty we (the U.S.) have alot of sway and if we don't want to send troops in there is a good chance noone else will.

I'm gonna get sooooooooooo flamed for this so I'll keep it short
Death's not such a bad thing, it's essential, it operates via a percentage medium which will allow our population to eventually reach equilibrium rather than our species becoming rapidly extinct. The aid is not for the dead but for the living, forget how many died and look at how many survived and are in BIG ASS trouble because of the mess.
The money you donate is not related to the number of dead but to the number of DYING, your donations are to save lives, not to ease your guilt over the toll so far.
