Edited by: Peachboy on 22/09/2010 22:56:07 I have moved to an area where high-speed internet is not available to me. No cable, no D.S.L., nothing. I have only 3 real options available to me.
-First is dial-up, I have tried using this to play eve, its not doable, plus it requires me to have a land line and pay that extra fee every month, comes out to about $50 a month (NOT worth it).
- Second option is satellite. I know the latency is terrible here, but the speed is decent, however there are some data usage restrictions. Not really a consideration because of the latency and the cost ($200+ for install plus $50 a month).
- Last and best option IMO is 3G via a phone carrier. I think this would provide decent latency and good enough speed. My concern is if I would be able to use it to play EVE and also surf the web from time to time without going over the data usage restrictions.
Basically I need to know how much data EVE uploads and downloads on average say every hour or so. Obviously this is going to depend on if I'm refreshing the market every 30 seconds in Jita or if I'm afking in 0.0 but there must be a guideline I can go by for this. Currently I'm missing out on EVE due to this and Its really starting to bug me. Thanks for any input guys!

The amount of data is pretty light, you shouldn't go over the 5 gb limit of most plans in a month just playing EVE.
When you bring web browsing into it, well good luck :P
I play a few MMOs with my Blackberry as a modem for my laptop when I'm not at home, really no issues with it. I have Verizon as a carrier...their broadband sux, but it's necessary for my job to have tethered service so I can get into the office if there's a problem.

You can hit alt+crtl+shift+m to bring up the ingame bandwidth moniter. That might help answer your question.

3G should be good, just be careful about downloading large things. such as games, large patches, youtube HD. might want to drop by a Starbucks or library for large downloads.

I've been logged in probably around 12 hours and my bandwidth monitor only shows 88mb downloaded...

If you haven't already, you need to see if there is a provider of Fixed Wireless in your area. If you have line of site (you're not in a canyon or a bunch of trees) to one of their towers, you're golden. Just do a google search or ask around more. Most people don't know how prevalent fixed wifi is around areas like you're describing.
Else, 3G

Don't forget about Clearwire. Where they don't have 4G they have 3G in most places that you can receive it from cell providers. The last time I looked they did not have restrictions on 4G but they did on 3G (5GB). They're also deploying wifimax. You might want to check into it.
No DSL eh? Even my father out in the middle of the country has DSL. Might want to recheck that if it's been a while. If you're just past the terminator for DSL you might want to construct a wifi antenna out of a old sat. dish. It's not hard. And make a friend or two willing to allow you to piggy back on their inet access.

Yes, some people do. You should get out more. Was it confusing for you? How about interwebz? Better now?

I was able to play Eve and use Vent using the AT&T 5 gb plan over Edge service. I never got an overage fee for actually playing the game. Downloading the patches, on the other hand....

Ed: BUT, you should definitely look into a wireless broadband provider in your area. It took me a year to find one here, but it was worthwhile. Sometimes. -- Eve Forum ***** Extraordinaire On Twitter Blog

This.
If you have any kind of store that sells coffee, or even fast food places like McDonalds, you might want to check with them. Even Barnes and Nobles has WiFi. A lot of them have free WiFi you can use to download the bigger stuff so you don't kill your download limit. Another thing you can use to help you out is downloading a program called NetMeter (its one word) which tracks how much over all data you've downloaded and uploaded over a period of time. It even has a built in warning alerts to tell you when you're reaching a certain threshold.

Had a guy from clear wire stop by about a month ago and gave us a 3 day demo. (let us hold onto the modem and give it a shot at the max speed)
Ran beautifully. If you can your hands on this, it will satisfy all your internet needs very very well. My 2 cents

I use sprint which has the same network as clear and the 4G w/ 3G as a backup works nicely. Sucks when there is a bad storm though. There is noticable latency and you will be able to tell the difference from somebody on dsl land line vs mobile broadband.

This might be your best option if you can bind the 2 modem cards together. It makes kinda like a mini ISDN line, which you may want to look into seeing if you can get ISDN line, will give you 128K up and down.

Do not even bother, my buddy did it and it wound up costing him close too $200 month with him going over his 5GB caps limit. Also, the latency is horrendous, try 300+ MS of delay.

Here again, be careful of the cap limits, they will hit you hard if you go over.
I would also look into the price of a T1/E1 line or a WISP (Wireless Internet Service Provider). These might be more doable options for the price.

I am paying a Ç19 a month plan with 5GB @HSDPA on an internet USB key.
EvE usage with pure mining is 12-13MB a day only EvE usage with PvE is 19MB a day EvE usage with PvP is... don't do it. Latency, temporary speed drops etc could cost you dearly. EvE usage with EvE WEB site sparse browsing for 8h a day = 23-25MB EvE usage with EvE + RL trading platform in quiet days = about 80MB a day and more. EvE usage with EVE + RL trading platform in busy days = more than 100MB a day, if the data feed provider sends > 7KB p.s. you can go up to 130MB and beyond a day.
Getting a Youtube video scores from 5 to 29MB a piece. Loading a new rich WEB site scores up to 2-4MB (expecially with Flash banners).
Also, beware loading GoogleDocs documents that are shared among many people.

Good luck finding a dialup provider that will provide ppp multilink at a decent price.

Yeah, using even a 5gb HSDPA plan works for EVE.
PVP is technically possible, but I wouldn't do big fleets, if you join Ad0pt, station camping is definitely possible. Teamspeak is a bit of a problem, will most likely be a bit more data usage than EVE.
The main problem is downloading patches for EVE, so you'd have to go to an internet cafe or something on patch days...
It should definitely be possible to stick to 130mb daily limits. There are plenty of bandwidth monitors available for free online, freemeter is one I know of, so you can be sure you don't go over your monthly limit.

Edited by: Chesty McJubblies on 25/09/2010 07:10:26 Have you considered moving out of the 1920s? If not, Civ 5 is available for DL atm, that'll tide you over till another game comes along. (offline 1-player, ofc) Suggestion: Remove the "new topic" button from everywhere apart from the list of topics section within a subforum.
That'd save those with chronic hand/eye coordination some face. |
