Edited by: Brian Ballsack on 25/09/2010 13:10:29 I doubt he has much stuff tbh, seeing as though this is the first time he has experienced a server with 40k + players, playing on it. You sometimes have to wait 30 seconds because this game has ALOT of players playing on it, not like WOW. Also 30 seconds is not a long time to wait.

Maybe so 30k+ people can't change ships every second all at once and make the server implode? ---------------- A million faces, each a million lies |

To make sure your client is synced up properly.
You wouldn't want to arrive outside a station in a ship without modules, or with -16777215 HP, now would you? ùùù ôIf you're not willing to fight for what you have in ≡v≡à you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.ö ù Karath Piki |

It also makes things more interesting in terms of game play. Like undocking / redocking instantly would make things even more boring for people camping station undocks. Same goes for when jumping through gates. It forces you to make a hard choice, instead of just running away like a little girl.

A long time ago one could get stuck between two gates. To help with that problem those timers where introduced. CCP has a long tradition of ignoring the root cause and creating a rather unconvinient workaround.

Apart from limiting server stress, they are there for a reason: Timers also prevent a lot of abuse of game mechanics such as docking and undocking repeatedly to avoid being killed in pvp while taking potshots at people outside, etc. Learn them and use them to your advantage. I saved my Apoc only two days ago by waiting for a gang to aggress me before I jumped through a gate, leaving them with a timer allowing me to safely warp off on the other side ^_^

this more or less just not only with jumping, happens on lots of occasions. entering fleets, changing ships, changing systems...
poor coding really, you don't do timer checks to solve these kind of issues... I guess it was done a long time ago, when eve was just a bunch of student programmers thinking about ultima and elite. good times...

Eve is like a woman - it constantly tells you to slow down and wait for it before you, er, reach your goal.

There are two stations in Egglenaert relatively close by each other....if you leave one in a shuttle, immediately warp to the other, it won't let you dock 'cause it's still working on the undock timer from the other station.
Kinda' funny.

this was asked several times b4
one of those times a dev popped up and said something like how EVE is made to run with dial-up connection and the 30 sec timers level the playing field, allowing the slower comps and connection time to catch up.
It also prevents u from changing states too quickly that might confuse the server. U dont wanna change from a inty to a BS only for the server to not register that u did it so fast and undocked and then u have ur inty blown up do u? :p

That was valid before Stackless I/O. They used to have these extreme lag-spikes between nodes, which I believe was the stated reason for implementing a session change timer. That issue has since been fixed, so the timer has probably been promoted to "working as intended", up from "crappy workaround".

It's been said already, the session timers are there because of [funky code vs variable connection speed].
There's possibly room now to decrease the session timer down to 20 seconds, but as the (G)man said: "Prepare for unforseen consequences". |

Because EVE's programing is old buggy and crappy, but on the plus side the game is wall to wall fan boys who'll tell you this game is the equivalent of god's orgasm.
