Its very hard to stop playing this game. The "just one more turn" feeling is strong in this one. So strong that I spent almost my entire weekend in front of the computer...
Also works in Wine *perfectly* for the ones with Linux.

I bought 4 on a steam sale and tbh it just didn't grab me and make me want to play like so many other games.
So... I've been shy to spend/waste money on 5. Sell me on it if you can, or is it just a waste if I didn't like 4??
And when the hell is someone going to make MoO 4?

It's a lot of fun for a while but to me it just feels really shallow. There's no real challenge in the game, the grand strategy side of things has you spamming wonders, the combat side doesn't require much effort to master. It's probably because I'm playing on Prince difficulty and/or singleplayer though, I'm sure the multiplayer aspect would add a lot of extra thinking.

I'm enjoying it but it seems a bit light, playing it along side Civ III and to be brutally honest III has it beat except for gfx.

anyone help me with a problem I seem to be having with mine? think I had same problem with civ IV, but its odd with V
I launch the game and everything is fine, the intro plays through no problems, but once it hits the next screen, my screen just goes 'mode not supported' yet after a while it works anyway, I was just wondering if there was a way I could make it work straight away rather than having to wait 30 minutes plus for it to randomly decide to work

Heh a great many people seem to play quietly.. also, se5 has a problem with cleartype in win7, and i think vista, which thwarted my attempt to try to get into it. Ive burned far too many a night before an exam in se4 as well >.>

I miss certain aspects of the older Civ games though. No more spies being one. How can a dictator launch a nuclear missile at a city he cant see!

i was a big fan of air recon missions in civ 4 - i would generally have carriers all over the place with fighters for that reason.

Frankly, its quite stupid that my planes cant do simple recon. Hopefully future patches will address this issue.

wait, really? aircraft in civ 5 cant run recon jobs? this totally skips the level of information warfare and goes straight to 'LOLOL YOU CANT SEE INSIDE MY BORDERS' >.> What ARE the ways of gathering intelligence nowadays?

So far, I havent found any apart from attacking and taking their cities to reveal the map. Even researching Satellites does not reveal the full map anymore.

well, i know strategy games are supposed to be about conquest, but I think thats taking it a tad far... if I dont know where to attack, I probably will just end up attacking everywhere... hardly a a strategically sound move if i had proper intelligence.
On the other hand, I hear gathering proper intelligence is what RUSE is all about

I like the Hexes, been wanting that since I started with the civ games.
The amry handling I am not fond of I liked my stacks :) Alos the lack of UI options is disturbig in Civ5. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thank god for no more stacks. More tactics are needed than just amassing 50 modern tanks and plowing through the enemy. ________________________________________________

The game is fantastic, but I think I would have preferred Civ5 to allow more than one unit on the same tile.

I really like the new non-stacking units, embarking and hexes, makes waging war a lot more enjoyable. However, I'm not sure I like how they've simplified the game's other aspects such as espionage, corporations, more specific civic options, allocation of funds to culture, espionage and science among other things. Takes too much depth off the game.

Yep, interesting logic they have. Askia of Songhai asked me if I'd join his military campaign against Rome. A deal was made and preparations began. After 10 turns the war is declared and our combined forces march deep into Roman territory and soon our enemy has only two cities left. I think it was at this point when Songhai made peace with Romans. I decided to go on without them and captured the remaining two cities in few turns. While sieging the last Roman city the Songhai contact me and tell me how they don't like my "warmongering". Soon after India, having had their own civilization almost wiped out by the Romans just before our attack, tells me the same. Oh, and it was my first war as well.

Was more to it then that, at least if you play against some competent friends :).
I just don't think needeing to spce out your amry is a good idea. Seems to be in place just to avoid stacks and long game turns. NAd imo that is no good reason. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Last night I wiped out the Japanese civilization with Giant Death Robots. Cue my Mazinger Z childhood memories.
It's a bit of a bummer the things they've taken out and simplified since Civ IV, but then some of those things were added on later expansions, so they may come back to Civ V. Regarding the removal of options to scout enemy territory, I'm guessing they did that to keep things a tad more risky and unpredictable, now that you won't easily know at all times the exact location and composition of the enemy's forces, so I'm not disliking that after all.
OTOH, I'm liking the new city-state and social policy trees mechanics. And liking as well the emphasis on having less but more durable units, and even the removal of stacks - as well as the hexes. Also liking how sending a large invading force across an ocean doesn't require anymore to micromanage all those transport boats.

Civ 4 was very disappointing. I got it, and then it sucked, so I never played it. Up until now, Civ 2 has been my favourite in that series (even though a Phalanx unit once defeated my nuclear missile hehe).
But after reading some Civ 5 reviews and how they pointed out that alot of the flaws with Civ 4 were fixed in Civ 5, and the new 1 military unit per square system with artillery shooting multiple squares, made me buy this game. The new military tactics resembles the old "Panzer General" turn-based strategy game, which I liked alot. It had the same grid system and artillery shooting multiple squares etc.
Anyways, I fired it up same day it was released (had it preloaded from Steam). Hit the Play Now immediately and started as Iroquis. The first nation I encountered were the French, so there was a war on before I had even invented as much as a sharpened stick. Incrediably addicting, and totally loved the new ranged unit system (which made me hate woods and hills even more for limiting the range, grrrr).
Brilliant game and if you disliked Civ 4 (like me) then don't worry, Civ 5 is not at all like it. Much better military tactic system and nice that they removed the goverment forms (democracy, republic and all that), but instead they added the Cultures you unlock, which will define you as a Democracy and such all based on which ones you pick. Also makes it more important to build certain buildings.
Also found out that being aggressive and expanding through conquering enemy cities is not very good in the long run since you end up having an overall unhappy population... and unhappiness doesn't just affect once city, it affects your whole nation (Hint... start razing cities if you are just wiping out an opponent hehe).
Great game, and a must for Civilization fans.

of random note, on non-stacking of units, i rather dislike what it means for economy units. The fact that two workers cant assist the same project is annoying at best..
I once had 3 workers attempting to build a road to a citystate for its reward thing, and it ended up that two would start working, and the third would get mad he couldnt move far enough to build the next segment, so he would whine to me about it. I click the route to button, and it does nothing (not even a 'worker cannot do this action this turn' warning, just nothing happens.)
And well, then the demo ended, so not much else i can say on that.

I started a game as George Washington (aka America.) First civ I ran into was the Iroquois. I just sat there for a minute thinking "I can't..." Then I quit the game.
