I'm looking for some advice on how to fight a carrier(s) with a BC/BS fleet with possibly some logistics support.
Would a falcon have much success trying to jam a carrier (to prevent spider tanking)? Assuming he's not in triage.
Do you try to kill the fighters or focus on the carrier?
If the carrier goes into triage does he lose control of his fighters?
When can he cyno out? Does it matter if he's pointed / engaged?

Neutralizing is always helpful as it will disable the ability to rep itself or others. But a lone carrier can have it's tank outgunned by a decent gang, say 20.
A falcon will have some success in jamming the carrier.
If you got logi backup, I wouldn't bother popping the fighters, unless they are overwhelming your logis rep ability ofc.
It loses control of fighters if it goes into triage.
Carriers can't cyno out if it's pointed. Being engaged or having aggro does no difference though.

A falcon can jam a carrier pretty effectively, and fighters shouldnt pose too much of a threat to a BC/BS fleet (especially if they have logi support). In my experience people tend to focus fire on the carrier, if fighters pose a threat to anyone they should be able to just warp out, bounce celestials if they chase. If a carrier is pointed it can't cyno out.

Edited by: King Rothgar on 28/09/2010 00:39:45 How many carriers? The number makes all the difference.
One carrier: it takes 5x t2 fitted BS's to kill. No neuting required, just blast him. It will take a while however and you'll need RR fitted. Don't pop the fighters, that's the majority of the loot value.
Multiple carriers spidering: As with RR BS's, it gets ugly fast. 2x carriers have at least twice the tanking ability per ship as a solo carrier, 3x more than triples it and so on. With 2x carriers you may manage to get by with 10x BS's but they'd have to be pretty elite players. 15-20x BS's is more reasonable. For 3+ carriers you seriously need dreads/SC's or to simply epically outnumber them (ie 50 vs 3).
On the bright side, a carrier only does 1000-1500 dps typically. So it's actually not too bad getting shot at by one. Generally a pvp carrier will have 2x RR's, maybe a cap transfer, a couple of neuts and maybe a smartbomb. You shouldn't depend on any sort of drones other than sentries (excluding fighters/fighter-bombers for dps). You are almost certain to get neuted some as well but it won't be any worse than a neut domi. ECM is more of a gamble than with smaller ships. A carrier with a single ECCM has over 140 sensor strength. Neuts are more reliable for shutting down RR ultimately.
Edited cause the word filter thinks scr*pe is profane.
Thus far you shall read, but no further; for this is my sig. |

Lone carriers are easy to kill, the trouble is finding a stupid one and pointing it. I've seen them go down to 15 combat BC's easy.
Once you've got it pinned in place it dies alot quicker than you think. I like me. 101st Space Marine Force Senior Recruiter |

Confirming carriers die all too easily if pilot is stupid. Watched a Dramiel point a carrier in a belt once. We managed to force him out of point range with drones. But the carrier pilot didn't bother to leave.
"You should leave now." says I. "Naw. I got it." says cap pilot.
Shortly thereafter HACs started showing up in groups of 5-10 and tied him down until they had about 60-80 swarming him. Didn't take long after that. "When you have to shoot, shoot. Don't talk." |
