Hi all,
I've recently returned from a fairly long break from eve.
I've come back to find the entire world of mining has been pretty much turned upside down. I was basically wondering what are the following:
The best mining laser for 0.0 space The best mining laser for 0.1 - 0.5 The best mining laser for 0.6 - 1
and if possible your preferred ship for mining those territories.
I know this is a lot so a link to a previous post of even a FAQ would be more then sufficient.
Thanks in Advance
Angelous

Miner II Miner II Miner II
these will fit on any ship with the turret slots and cpu to mount them a thorax with a dronebay full of angry ogres offers a good ore pull/defence balence but might not be up to 0.0 but will do 1.0 - 0.1 ok
There are also strip miner I's and modulated strip miner II's but they only fit on mining barges which in and of themselves require a vast skill sheet to fly
good luck and remember the miners motto "No roid gets left behind!" ----------------------------------------------

Just get a large industrial with a miner I or II and point it at a scordite roid in 1.0 space. Then go get lunch, walk the dog, take a nap, or mow the lawn. Then come back and point it at the next roid. Repeat until your cargo is full (takes several hours to fill my Badger Mk II with a full complement of cargo expanders) and unload and come back for more.
Do this for a month or two while training up skills to use mining barges (I'm still in this process myself). Once you get your large mining barge, you'll be able to strip mine alot faster. Mining with the industrial should have made you like 40-60M ISK but you'll even make more money with the barge. You can use this money to buy top of the line cargo expanders and other mods, spare ships, or whatever.
You can do all of this without ever setting foot outside 0.9 space. And there's really no need to ever do so in your entire career. Mining is a nice, safe, and relaxing pastime.

Basically I did what the above poster just said.
I started playing a month ago.
I mined with an Imicus until I had the skills to get a badger II - three cargo expanders mean it will hold about $700k of scordie in one load. Takes about three hours to fill with a miner II.
Since I have to train a bunch of skills anyway, I would just go to .9 space and find a quiet belt and AFK mine all day while at work. That made me about $2million ISK per day.
Tomorrow I will have all the skills trained to get a medium mining barge. I can still AFK mine with it but I will have to make a lot more trips with it. However, I can now also mine ice.
For the second month, I will continue to mine and make ISK while I train for some skills related to combat and mining in 0.0 space. Then I will be finally ready to play this game LOL
If you cant AFK mine a lot, then its hard to get a start on this game without being really bored or really frustrated.

two million afk, huh? wow. course, that's sucking on veldspar roids that won't pop while yer at RL stuff.
*shrug* dunno, mate, i make 2.5million in 90 minutes after 10 days on my character's training. (scordite/0.9space) That's an hour and a half of surfing the web. Kinda puts that afk mining gig into perspective. ______________________ Best darned links ingame and out (backup) |

I don't think this needs to turn into a "i'm better than you post". I was merely sharing what I had done the first month while waiting to train skills so you can actually play this game.
That is all.....

If you use a scanner, you can target the more plentiful roids. And if it does pop while you're afk, who cares?

Don't think so. Ice is probably the most exotic thing to mine at the moment. You'll need a mining barge for that.

So how safe is it to mine AFK in a 0.9 system? I'd hate to come home from work one day to find myself floating round a 'roid field in a pod.

That depends how creative you are at picking .9 systems
The real issue is that the risk is worth the reward. I can make about $750k per load, and my badger only cost me $800k to start - so even if I lost one badger a day it would still be worth the risk.
I have lost two ships so far, but have moved to some more remote systems with other AFK miners and have not experienced a problem as of late.
