Need help in understanding Bubbles and drag bubble techniques or a least point me to a good guide. my lack of knowledge cost me and my friend dearly and do not want to make the same mistake.

[Short list of] Essential Pro-tips to bubbles:
- Bubbles act just like warp disruptors, you cannot warp away so long as you are inside them
- You CAN use your MWD in them... they disrupt, not scramble.
- To create a "drag bubble" you must fulfill 2 things: 1) the bubble must be on grid and 2) the bubble must "line up" with the stations/gates/celestials it is trying to "suck" people in from (i.e. warping in at an "odd" angle will prevent the bubble from "sucking" you in).
- It doesn't matter if you warp in at 0 or 100... the bubble will still "suck" you in.
- Bubbles have a fair bit of HP... so don't think you can just destroy it and run away. _______________________

A bubble can prevent you from warping out even if it goes up after you initiate warp.
A bubble will only catch you when landing if it was up before you initiated warp.
If you try to warp while inside a bubble, the bubble owner becomes aggressed.

Also, larger ships will land nearer the centre of the bubble and smaller ships will land nearer the edge (sometimes pods and shuttles will land just outside).

If I drop a dictor bubble 80km off a gate in line with another celestial (ie like you would drop a sling bubble).....does the dictor bubble act as a sling bubble whilst it's active?

Yes, so long as they enter warp after you put up the bubble.
Although the distance from the gate is irrelevant, the bubble just needs to be on the same grid and in line.

So, if I warp prior to a planet and then to a gate it will be most likely that I will not get sucked into the bubble?

So long as the angle is steep enough away from the bubble... yes. I recommend warping to either the planet that is closest to the gate or the planet that is the farthest out in system. _______________________

Unless its N-RAEL where all the planets are (were?) routinely bubbled
In most systems, the simplest thing to do is warp near the sun then go to gate. Usually you'll find that you have no problems warping direct to gate from there. A quick look at the solar system map when you're warping to sun should allow you to see whether your target gate aligns (or comes close) to another gate/station from the sun.
Very few people routinely align a drag bubble with the sun, although if someone drops a large T2 bubble 50km or so behind the gate then its likely that will cover a hell of a lot of celestials. Fortunately you won't find that many people running about with the skills and the cargospace to place them
You can of course always dump cap and warp straight to gate, but obviously you aim to land several AU short of the gate. Once you get close then a quick 5 degree dscan will tell you whats there.
For the gates way the hell out from any other celestial in-system then you have limited options. You're more or less certain to get caught in the bubble(s) if you don't have an unaligned bookmark on-grid.
tl;dr its not much of an issue except in choke systems or high-sec<->null-sec boundaries. Make unaligned on and off-grid bookmarks when you get the chance.
