I've heard a lot of cool things about it. I've seen many nifty videos of things you can do with the crafting in it like the 16-bit ACU. I believe there is a free single player version of the game you can try out. I suggest giving that a go.

Edited by: Miriam Letisse on 05/10/2010 18:53:45 There's a much needed update near the end of October that will be adding some more stuff, updates have been somewhat lacking recently since the guy (Notch) has been busy setting up the business.
As for what Zymurgist said, the 16-bit ACU and other such things are useless to most people unless you have an interest in that sort of thing. The way it works seems unwieldy and limited, taking up massive space for even simple systems, and as such has no real use to the mining and building aspect of the game. For now at least.
Otherwise it's fun and a little bit addictive.

However, seeing that the main game is still in an early alpha, I'm gonna wait some time before even thinking about investing in it. Haha! Awesome series of vids. Never really did any searching for what minecraft was sans a few crazy looking youtube vids that made it seem like some sort of 3d lego plaything. But after watching all 13 of the survival vids and seeing the potential the game has I'm definintly getting a copy.

So, i get the pre-order to play the alpha.
Everything is going great. I built myself a castle with a lovely glass roof and a spire that pierces the heavens themselves. I managed to craft myself a number of awesome tools and weapons. life is good.
then while digging in my mine looking for more iron veins i dug up this cool little blue hole. I'm thinking its some kinda flooded cave. so, i jump into what i thought would be water. i was very wrong. it was actually the bottom of the world and i fell to my death losing all my iron, tools, and very nice weapons.
I think I'm just going to start over...

Minecraft is one of those games that breaks just about every single convention out there: -no real DRM -Demo is close to fully featured, and has no time limit -Crappy graphics -Very little marketing/advertising - if any at all -Basic gameplay - you place blocks and remove them -Limited content - only a handful of blocks and monsters
The game lives purely off of it's core gameplay mechanics. It just goes to show that the thing that gamers really want is innovative and solid gameplay. Not flashy graphics and huge budgets.

Quote: -Demo is close to fully featured, and has no time limit
Actually the demo is much more limited than the "full" version, there's no crafting or even inventory for instance.
Quote: -Crappy graphics
Well that's subjective isn't it, I mean they're great compared to some games
Quote: -Very little marketing/advertising - if any at all
And yet somehow the guy who made it has already amassed $3,000,000 from it
Quote: -Basic gameplay - you place blocks and remove them
True, like I said there is a bit of crafting and as mentioned earlier, red stone.
Quote: -Limited content - only a handful of blocks and monsters
Again, true, but it is a beta and the maps are virtually infinite in size. Each world can be up to 8 times the surface area of the Earth though, so there is a limit but it would probably take your entire life to explore it.

So true.

not really.. depends what you are trying to get i suppose. PI is a lot about clicking the right place multiple times - tbh, minecraft is more about holding down the mouse button while you point in the general direction of what you are 'mining'. the precision control is not really required.

The problem with Minecraft right now is the lack of a real demo or anything. Creative, the free mode, is so out of date and completely different from Alpha it's not even the same game. You almost have to be a pirate to know you want to buy it.
But you do want to buy it.

Its not likes its an MMO, you pay once and you got it. I picked it up now since it was cheaper after all, adn I wanted to test it some more.
It is still alpha, so it kind of limited. I guess beta or a final version will be more interesting, and hopefully a decent multiplayer. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

OK so I finally broke down and bought Minecraft. I checked my contract and despite what CCP Wrangler says I am allowed to play games that aren't EVE Online
I played for 7 hours straight If I didn't have to work today I would still be playing it! Its fun, its addictive, its frustrating, its a sandbox. I have an aqueduct, some fields of grain, and a huge freaking hole in the ground!

I've had the game for a couple weeks now and its addictive as hell.
I went and built an underground, underwater tree farm in the middle of a lake. I drowned five times in the construction of this project and yes, it did take an ungodly amount of glass.

Edited by: Florio on 15/10/2010 19:21:43 I don't believe it! I started playing Minecraft too recently, and I'm currently working on....an underwater lair! Great minds think alike :)
I'm using soil blocks for the rooms, then covering with glass, then hollowing it out. My main chamber is a vast pyramid about 16 blocks to the water's surface, then rising still further still into the air (unfinished). I'm going to have it "float" off the bottom too.
edit/ I love the Matrix effect you get when you view the water through the underwater glass.

So... I'm sold, this **** is awesome. I could never get hooked on Dwarf Fortress, the graphics were just too far away from what I was used to. But this? It's not that far away, you can clearly understand what is what, and what is awesome. I'll give you a mini AAR to show how awesome this game is right from the start. I haven't built anything as cool as the underwater tree farm or the highway but I'm working on it. Keep in mind that I took these pictures after I finished building, so you'll see stuff before they should be there as you're reading.
This nice little beach is my spawn point, it may not seem very special but considering what I wanted it ended up being an ideal starting location. I knew right away that I wanted to build an underground lair and I didn't have to walk far to find the ideal location (Done some work on it already in this picture, just imagine that the wall looking things aren't there).
Unfortunately I had to spend a lot of time climbing up the hills you see in the first picture to get back to SENSATION BAY FORTRESS, after dying to roaming spiders, zombies and Al-Qaida members. That is until engineering solved my issues, this wall managed to keep me safe from all the evil spiders, zombies and douchebag suicide bombers. At first I built it 2 tiles high but I ended up dying two more times because the archers in Minecraft have played Unreal Tournament and bunny jump against your wall while spraying a rain of arrows.
But why am I ****ing around on the surface you may ask? Well when building my secret underground lair I noticed that I couldn't see ****, and while I've seen torches used in the videos I have no clue how to find them. So being the eco friendly man that I am, not to mention a genius when it comes to resource management, I decided to let the sun do the work for me. 4 billion deaths later, one Chinese wall built and one secret lair/cavern discovered, I finally finish my Illumination Shafts. I then realized that no underground lair is complete without an indoor pool and/or whatever else you might need water for, so I decided to create an underground river, complete with service stairways and a nice pathway on both sides that I can walk on and roleplay and stuff.
That lair/cavern (Which remains unexplored) thing was came as complete surprise to me. The previously mentioned Al-Qaida operatives seemed to all come from the same direction, it happened to be fairly close to where I was building my wall and I ended up dying three or four times in a row in the same spot. On the third death I actually fell into the secret cavern/lair that had opened up because of the suicide bombers creating craters in the ground with their explosions.
Hope I didn't scare anyone away from Minecraft.

Here's my spawning area in the Survival/Alpha game. I have raised the spawn point to a high level for safety and aethetics, and enclosed the surrounding area within a 2x2x2 pit to keep out monsters. The surrounding area is well lit and patterned with sand and grass. High above the spawn point above the clouds is a beacon structure at the maximum height holding torches, to act as a beacon if I'm nearby and lost without a compass (and also for coolness).
First underwater lair with pyramid in background. My first small underwater lair is just to the left of centre. There's a temporary soil bridge out to my pyramid project which is unfinished. The square pyramid is being constructed of soil and gravel with a vast base deep below the water (hence my low health hehe). I haven't finished the bit underwater yet. I'll cover it with glass blocks then hollow it out, so it'll be a huge underwater space with the tip poking out above the surface.

What? At the moment, survival multiplayer (SMP) is pretty bad, as furnaces don't work, redstone doesn't work, and there are lots of bugs. However, you can hack in things like iron, which you would get from furnaces , and it works pretty well if you just want to build stuff. It's pretty buggy though... Monsters also don't work. The Halloween update is supposed to have lots of SMP fixes though, so it might be worth playing soon...
