As I wait for my training skills to get me into a barge, I have been doing some courier work from the market to pass the time. I am in an Industrial and sometimes wish I had the space of a Freighter. So I looked into them and seen they have no fittings, absolutely no security features that I can see. What would be the reason to spend 650 million on a cargo holder if it can't defend itself? Wouldn't they be easy targets?

Yes, it IS a big massive target.
It also has a big massive hull that needs to be blasted through.
Massive hull HP = lots of time and/or ships shooting it.
CONCORD response times in highsec tend to discourage drawn out shooting matches against freighters.
If the value of the expected cargo drop won't replace the ships needed to kill the freighter, not many will engage. (Unless at war, or seriously needing lulz)
Now before you shell out the massive funds for one of those monstrosities, figure out why you'd need one first. Also take note that the freighter can NOT load cargo while in space unless at a friendly POS. (although it can loot the wreckage of another freighter, but nothing else)
As for moving massive cargo volumes, the freighter is King. It's slow as hell covering distance and accelerating, but not having to do multiple trips pays off.

Freighter is the way to go.
If you have a 35k cargo worth a bill, it's safer in a freighter than a hauler. They have quite a few hp to eat through in the hull.
You dont really want to carry more than a bill or two tho, and even then you want to scout key systems.
But yeah.. freighter is cool, and a fenrir is quicker than an occator I think :P

really wish they had a light freighter that isn't called ORCA. I can fly an ORCA, but wish I had a use for the Gallente Industrial 5 I trained. T2 transports don't really have the capacity I want and I don't really have a need for 900K+ m3 at the moment, but as soon as you even mention smaller freighters then JF and have about 120k m3 in the suggestion forum, everyone goes apebat **** against it. Hell, 120,000 m3 (one freight can) with an align time of 25 seconds and 80k hitpoints sounds fair (6-8 guys to gank maybe?) but it seems everyone enjoys shooting injustrials with tempests solo or bringing 12 buddies to split the haul of an Obbie when half of it went poof!.

Don't go eating your heart out for the align time. Train up an alt for mwd and web, put him in the same corp and sling the freighter from gate to gate. Problem solved.
