I've looked at several of articles on PI, but this is my first attempt at setting up a colony.
I set up a Basic control unit on a gas planet and have a number of problems.
1. I can't figure out how to scan for raw materials for the extractors. I've got one Noble Gas extractor set up, and I've clicked and double clicked on everything I can think of, but I can't get a display like the one shown in the tutorials.
2. How do I turn links into routes? The tutorial display was too small for me to see a lot of what they did. I can get a popup menu that has a routes option on it, but it doesn't seem to do anything.
3. How do I start and stop the units, like control center, extractors, etc.
More questions as I get farther. I'm determined to figure this out.

Edited by: Easy Target on 06/10/2010 22:12:39 To scan for materials:
In planet view on the left side of the screen go to Scan which is under your HOME and EXIT buttons
Left click what you want to scan for and it will colour the planet according to the resources available for that material The slider above it changes the sensitivity
To scan for Stuff for the extractors either double click one or left click once and the window that pops up click the "Survey" icon. Looks like an Arrow pointing down to a target It will give 4 options click the one you want then click install
Nothing will happen till you hit the submit button that appears on the left side under your scan button
For links into routes connect everything up using the links Left click your extractor and click on "Routes" (three arrows pointing to the centre) Left click the commodity, create route, click the destination, create route
Wash rinse repeat
Remember nothing will take effect till you click submit I dont think you can route something if the extractor isnt set to extract anything. So do that first
You are then into the realms of efficiently setting up the PI system You are generally best to route everything to a storage depot or launch pad, the route everything out from there. That way excess extracted material isnt wasted and is stored in the depot till needed
Extractors should have 1 dotted line coming from them Production places should have 2, 1 going into it for raw materials then one coming out of it for whatever it produces back to the storage depot
Edit In the depot you will have a big list of incoming and outgoing To send material to the production place you can use any incoming entry. It just makes a new entry for every extractor. So if you have 10 extractors extraction Material A, you get 10 entries of material A in the depot with which to make outgoing routes to the production place
Just dive in, do the shortest run for the extractors and faff around till you get it sorted ----------------------------------------------- Please resize your signature to the maximum allowed of 400 x 120 pixels with a maximum file size of 24000 bytes. Navigator

This is the guide I used when I started PI
Louis's PI Guide
Then ... what I did was go to the test server and play around with making colonies until I had a good feel for it. That way - I wasn't making mistakes with my live server money. Most things on the test server can be found for little or nothing.

Thanks guys. I finally produced a bottle of water. ![Very Happy](/images/icon_biggrin.gif)
Now it's time for more questions.
What happens if I don't log on for a day and the control center overflows, or is that possible?
If I have an advanced control center can I still use cheap extractor?
The three colonies I have use the Basic control center, a processing facility and from 3 to 5 extractors. There's no way to add on to this to make a P3 product, is there?

This maybe helpful to you albeit a bit massive.
Then there is this what can be found where and is use with/ in for/ what.
With some more info on pi here.
Quote: What happens if I don't log on for a day and the control center overflows, or is that possible?
When storage facilities get loaded to their full capacity stuff that gets mined/created after that event gets lost.
Quote: If I have an advanced control center can I still use cheap extractor?
Don't see why not.

For P3 you need Advanced Industry Facilities. If you are missing Refined Commodities you can always import them to your launchpad and link them up.
