I've been on sisi recently and they have a new explosion effect for sub-capitals and have removed capital explosions effects aswell as the structural damage effect (trail of fire).
So it seems to be likely that CCP may be overhauling explosion and damage effects. But what about the future? What could make EVE battles spectacular to watch?
I was thinking about this and thought of the frost-bite engine and the way it displays debris, gibs, ect. I.E, you could have pieces of ships fall off or split apart, wrecks crash into ships, wrecks crash into wrecks, ect and it could have no effect on network traffic.
If you fire a rocket at a tank in this engine, the tank will lose it's plating. You can then push this debris about in the game but it has no effect on gameplay because it's simply the graphics and physice engine rendering it and not sending any information surrounding the fallen armor plate to other players (they just see you running around randomly or if they were in sync they would see you pushing the plate).
So, if you destroy say a myrmidon in the game, it gets destroyed and spawns a static 'half a myrmidon wreck' for the container. Meanwhile your graphic engine renders the other half as continuing to travel with bits of debris also being rendered. These pieces could bounce off your ship or burn up in your shield and the half of the myrmidon could smash into other wrecks but never directly influence a player ship that's in play.
Hell, if you were a clever enough programmer you could have the engine destroy the wreck / have it explode before your ship reaches it or be rammed by your ship into oblivion as if it wasn't there to create more immersion.
So yeah, a very ambitious outlook on what eve could do with it's graphics regarding combat. But really, I would just be happier if my shots randomised and struck different parts of the hull and missed when they miss.
Other things I want:
Weapon fire contacting with shield, armor and structure effect. Ship sections being exposed, explosions internally, fires, life pods being launched, ect when structure is hit.
ECCM to be replaced by a module on the ship like a radar dish spinning (and this goes for other modules)
Missiles to fire from their bays
Warp disruptors to be the mini version of the pos variant and project their current effect / beam towards the oposing ship (could also do this for ECM, TD, SD, ect)
Armor hardening effect to be changed.
Please add any other graphical effects you think should be changed, why and what a possible compromise could be.
Thanks for reading.

So do you want them to just 'magic' it up or do you understand the kind of work and pressure ideas like this entail?

As a Masters student in a 5 year degree for Electronic & Software Engineering, I think I do.

Have you seen what happens when CCP trys something new. Even minor things?
See sound engine Apocrypha to Present. See Catalyst Model and further more why do i even need a sig? |

What IS up with the Catalyst model? It's totally funked up. -- I, for one, welcome the chance to open a bar I can decorate with the corpses of those I have slain. All hail Incarna. |

No software developer in the world ever got it right the first time. Anyway, this was to be a discussion on graphics not how CCP are doing their job and they've done a great job since they began EVE. They're getting to the stage of their game where they realise that it'll come down to quality over content, not the other way around. Unfortunately they have a lot on their plate right now and I am not referring to Incarna or Dust.
Besides, even if CCP fixed everything next month the forum would find something new to whine about. It's an ongoing trend but it was never as bad as it was in recent months. I feel an oldie because I remember the days that a 50 vs 50 battle was a large alliance 0.0 battle which suffered probably more lag than today. Nowadays people demand results but if ccp gave them 500 vs 500, they would simply try a 1000 vs 1000 the next day.
Perhaps the best solution is to find a way of dividing battles amongst different solar systems instead of having massive fleets engage each other on one grid. But obviously this would be a new feature and people would whine again about CCP's priorities. Anyway, this is enough of this discussion.

Fine. I'll summarize the usual arguments.
Not worth the resources, Not worth the risk. If you do implement it, let us turn it off in the options menu. and further more why do i even need a sig? |

Then we are agreed. I didn't think a thread could go as smoothly as this in GD.

Students are frequently better educated on the subject in question actually, even if they have less hands-on experience.
And a student DEFINITELY knows more than the layman. -

I disagree. I think that as hardware gets better, there becomes an increasing business case to update graphics, as they are a key feature for many gamers. Once the majority of players run a system that is capable of it, it would make sense to put such an element in.
I agree such a thing would be best left as an option, of course.
Now, to the original idea itself. I like it.
Some effects could be done very cheaply - partially randomising the locations of weapon fire and the paths of missiles would be easy. It'd be nice if missiles (and possibly drones) could actually come out of a bay on some part of the ships model. These kinds of low hanging fruit I would very much like to see as soon as reasonably possible.
Other things would be relatively tricky to achieve. Big chunks of ship-shaped debris breaking apart would probably be quite resource heavy to acheive, and might be best left til later. Seeing bits of broken ships collide and then catastrophically explode, just for eyecandy, would be awesome though.
There are a few things I would like to see first though - animations returned to all pos modules (or a better system to replace the current ones entirely!), engine trails returned, and anything else that got taken out to be put back in. I'm sure there was breifly some totally awesome cloak effect that... disappeared.

I like the explosions ideas, but CCP doesnt have the best track record when it comes to these things. Also agree with the above poster, I want my engine trails back, the sweeping cloak was the coolest ever for the short time we had it. Oh and the JUMP EFFECT. Caps used to come onto grid with a dramatic bang, now they just appear with a small and insignificant *plop*

lol get some real world industry experience on top of that and then we'll talk.
Theory is fine... its application in a working environment is a somewhat different proposal.
