sry, but still i'm bit ****ed because i again realised, how ****ed up the UI of eve online is!
not only that even after the third patch of the patch rudimentary stuff like stacking or pinning containers does not work, no, its just one of the many other possible topics, that circles 'round containers, contracts and sorting items, etc.
what just happened:
1. wanted to set up a contract (courier) from items that i had organized in a station vault (new ships, items, rigs, etc.)
well - that was impossible. i had to drag/drop everything out of the container. so the client organized everything into its ship/items category!
2. i set up the contract, checking every ship (as i decided that taking everything from "items", seting up a contract and then adding the ships would be easier/faster) on a list that included about 1000 items! of course there was no way to sort the things by item type (there was by name (item name/ name given/quantity). what a marvel! like this you scroll through your whole "items" category, searching everything and checking it one by one! great!?
3. after going through the whole torture, fixing the prices, setting drop-off location, entering the prices and finaly finishing the contract, i hit the "finalize" button, hoping i'm there - almost -just...
well it tells me, that there are to many items! whut? at the end of that small button clicking and searching torture? can't be true! it rely let me add those 6 different ships to a group that already was much to large to tell me at the end after entering all necessary data, that my contract contained to many items?
well, this is one nice placement for the formality check! rly! good work guys!

1. containers: containers seem to be what "folders" are for an os, right? you kinda sort stuff into 'em. thats what for instance the description of the station warehouse says. well - there is a huge difference: you can do **** with stuff in containers! no contracts! no market orders! no nothing! (well you can fit to active ship - wow!)
so this is like your os telling you: well, you can organize your files in folders and subfolders, but for working with them, please copy em to your main directory!
this seems to be an genius driven idea, realy!
2.customizability: why not add the ability to customize? why cant i sort after my own ways? why no filters? you could simply port the "filter setting" from the LP store! or from regular containers (they do have this if i remember correctly).
3. formality check: well, the end of a "action" usually is one nice placement for a formality check. but finding items and adding when the limit already is exceeded? bad programming! well, not exactly bad, just not very clever - nor customer facilitation oriented...
tbh: its only a game. but i'm so damn happy that you guys dont organize visa and visiting issues for a given country. imaging that you would give ppl visas, let them fly to your country and tell them at the airport of the country the want to visit, that there was an issue with the visa and ask em to report back to the (your) visa agency (ergo: their country of origin) and get that sorted.

workaround 1) make 2 contracts workaround 2) select the items/ships in the items/ship hangar by [ctrl]+[Lmouseclick] and then [Rmouseclick] the selection and choose <create contract> yw New Eden needs a Public Feature/Idea/Bug-Tracker |

Sims-in-space and Halo514 is more important, dude. CCP's data does not support polished features as a way to bring in new subscriptions compared to shiny(but still unpolished) new features! Remember? |

thx for the replys. but Tres Farmer, why it does not work / took that long anyway:
workaround 1:
does not work, as it was a contract to red frog wich is about 4M for 8 or 9 jumps. so i guess 2 contracts would have been 8M - so this is not an option! (also i would have needed about 9 contracts btw. so rly not an option.
anyway - why is there tis limit of 100 objects? does this make any sense? if you want to keep it - rework the UI!
workaround 2: thats what i did. but i still had to find all the ships, that where integrated in one overview (items & ships). that realy took ages. it sucks if setting up a contract takes 15 minutes - and at the end they tell you: well, thats toooo much.

it just seems that ccp is pushing too much resources into their new projects / and / or new addons and not working on eve properly. or not the way (at least i think) they should.
this refraction update for the UI showed that quite well. while the thing in itself is good, important and goes into the right direction, the way the release worked was a shame for a rather big software company. releasing the whole thing in less then a beta stage shows that.
also the way they deal with the csm. its just sad to see ccp (an so eve) taking wrong directions. or better, right direction (complete scfi universe, interacting, etc) but with the wrong pace. because - wanting too much with too little experience / resources can go wrong too.

makes me wonder how many potential new subscribers are thrown off by completely unpolished and barely usable features. getting used to the UI is about 1/2 of the learning curve imo.

Don't worry about it, you'll be able to buy a flawless UI when they introduce microtransactions!

Edited by: Tres Farmer on 10/10/2010 11:41:36 I don't like the UI that much either.. just read my replies on the threads that had been hot 1-2 months ago where the 'in-18-months' meme stems from. We didn't got a statement from Hilmar so far anyways.. only replies in those threads.
In future I'll troll threads straight from the start as everyone else. Just wanted to help now, as we already found out that this stuff won't be touched for another year..
Edit: Totally forgot *to troll a bit*, as you're asking for features not implemented yet (otherwise it would be bugs/fixes, LOL) you should post this in the big mess that is features and ideas or even better sink it into the black hole that is assembly hall. The fact that it tells you that you've selected >100 items right at the end screen is maddening. It shouldn't let you get past the 'select items' screen.

They need to rewrite the whole damn code. They can't even touch the archaic code to make even small changes for fear of breaking everything. And if they do, stuff like boot.ini and the recent patch happens.
So CCP, please rewrite EVE from scratch, with proper structure, organization and modern coding practices, and with special attention given to the database relations and how the items are handled. You can't even change the color of T2 BPOs for God's sake.
Do this, and do it right this time.

That being said, I agree. EVE's UI is a complete mess, and should be fully reworked by a team of competent programmers and designers. This would be a long and expensive process given the complexity of the game and its various options, but would pay off in the long run.
Interestingly, studies show that Icelanders in general and Icelandic businesspersons in particular are unable to plan this far ahead. Thus, we will see a lot of little changes here and there, but never a full rework.

My theory is this is the downside to having a very long running game and gaming company with many veteran players and developers. If you were playing EVE for the last 5 years, the UI seems perfectly reasonable. Nor is it confusing. If you are a CCP project manager, you can rightly say the customer paid for this for the last seven years, why not do a new shiny instead of fixing it. if you are new to EVE, already dealing with the EVE learning curve, and your idea of UI is Apple/Windows7/iPhone ... then the UI is quite jarring.
But almost to unique to EVE are two resistances that CCP must fight:
1) Any UI improvement is met with the "it will help bots." In most cases, these objections are annoyingly dumb; a macro does not care whether it generates one or seventeen characters, whereas I would prefer some convenience. I expect that if someone posted a feature request for EVE client to crash less, someone would object, rightly pointing out a stable client would benefit botters.
2) Some equate an inconvenient user experience with a sophisticated/1337 user experience. PvP in EVE should not be automated. But what exactly is the skill, other than masochism, in PI extractor clicking, 25 WT0 jumps in hisec, the S&I or corp or POS dialog boxes, etc? So whereas Excel or Android or iTunes users want things to be more convenient, that sentiment is not universal in EVE.
It could be my bias, but I think the state of the UI impacts subscriber count, especially for trial account users.
