Wanted to kick around some ideas for future updates concerning PI.
1. Since we can now build stuff on planets, couldn't we also build research facilities there?
2. Would it be possible to set your launchpad to fire off your resources to another launchpad on a different planet in the same system. Naturally it could be made only available at a specific time, in order to make things as "realistic" as possible.
3. (this might already be in place) Would it be possible for two corps at war to blast each other's PI facilities from orbit?
Other ideas welcome.

Player controlled Research facilities are already handled through the POS system. I would rather see that left separate from PI... but I would like to see PI expand in some fashion. Perhaps some level of colony management where how you maintain your colony of workers has a direct affect on output. (just an idea that I haven't thought out)

Hmmm... planetary rotation, differences in orbital velocity... "Realistic" could make this overly complex. You could be trying to launch your materials to another planet with the sun directly in between. Would this result in your materials being destroyed? Could your materials be intercepted in transit by another player?

No, it is currently not possible. If you open up the ability to attack PI facilities you would put a serious pinch on low-sec PI. I already run the risk of getting blasted when I have to go retrieve my goods. If they could get destroyed at anytime by anyone that's not afraid of their security standing it wouldn't be worth it anymore. The reward of extra production vs. risk of low-sec is currently drawing carebears into this treacherous area. Allowing destruction of their facilities would seriously affect this.
This does though lead to the option of building defense platforms for your PI (like a POS). This in turn leads to the need for fuel, shields, ammo...
All in all it's an interesting thought. PI is still in it's infancy so I'm sure many changes will occur as time goes by.

Have the ability to check what you've got in the Customs office without having to be in the same system. You can check what's in a container 40 jumps away, but you can't see what you may have in the Customs Office when you're in the next system.
Why doesn't your assets in the Customs Office show up as assets anyway??

CCP has already said in an interview they are considering adding a lot of other things through PI to take them away from the seeded NPC hands.
Such as skill books and BPOs. So quite possibly, Research Facilities will involve these things. Heres to hoping they follow through.

Something has got to use up all that excess CPU eventually. Seems that would indicate the upcoming Extractor Control Units and "something else." The "something else" may be BP research facilities or some kind of skill-book making facilities or something that does both.
Re: Your point 2 - The taxmen would not like that.
Re: Your point 3 - PI facs are individually-owned and not corporate assets. This may be a way for CCP to force the DUST 514 answer to planetary operations vice orbital bombardment via EvE.

I like the idea of colony-based research. Perhaps a building could be constructed that could give you another research slot, or something like that. Nothing to usurp the research stations in POS', but a nice little low-level expansion would be useful.
As someone else stated, I think PI will become the sole provider for a lot of the products currently only available from NPCs. That's still quite a few products.
The main improvement that could be made, in my book, is simplifying the interface. At the moment, it is a clickfest, and it doesn't need to be. CCP are wondering why people are not micromanaging their colonies, and that is precisely why. I have a total of 14 colonies across three characters, with around 10-15 extractors on each one. That's a bare minimum of 140 jobs to setup. If you're doing half-hour cycles, that's one hell of a lot of clicks. It just needs to be possible to select ALL the extractors on a planet and set them all to the same cycle simultaneously. I don't buy the argument that this will make it possible for macros to take over, but if you can automate one step, you can automate one hundred.
If you want to encourage micromanagement, you need to make it less repetetive. It does need human interaction to stop it being farmed by macros, but you don't have to make it repetetive.
