Edited by: Ghalyen on 12/10/2010 15:28:24 I recently set up 4 planets in Low Sec for some PI, and found that on my Lava, Plasma, and Oceanic planets, the power consumption of the links was pretty standard, However, on the Gas planet, the required power for links was almost quadrupled. Is this normal? Or am I missing something?
Thanks!

Link power and cpu usage is a function of their lengths. Gas planets tend to be quite large and therefore the links are very long, hence using more power/cpu.

One part of the explanation that was left out of the previous post is that link length per pixel is higher on Gas planets because of their increased surface area. --Vel

Should it be that big of a difference though? I went back and checked the length and the actual difference, and from what appears to be the same length of link, it using nine times the power of my other planets. (86 on a lava planet- 771 on gas)

Originally by: Ghalyen and from what appears to be the same length of link,
and that is your key point. Planet A has a 40K radius Planet B has a 320K Radius. A link that to the eye looks the same length on planet A might be 100 Power but on Planet B is 800.
Hints:
If you have multable planets of the same type look at the info of each and pick the one that has the smallest radius.... unless the concentration if something is so much better on another. If you can get an extra building or 2 on a planet it is worth a slightly less extraction rate.
On planets that have high radius (gas mostly) put everything as close to each other as you can. That sounds simplistic but if you cluster your factorys around your spaceport (and you should) having just a slightly more space then needed betwine then can add up to a bunch of power. As you place your buldings move then int he smallest increments you can until the go from red to clear then place. Also, on big planets if you are extracting multiable items it might be better to form individual areas of manufacturing instead of linking everything. Or if there are 2 items close together make sure you chain your factorys towards the next storage linking inbetwine the factors.
For example on one gas planet I do this (not showing everything just the example of one chain):
Spaceport1-Ex-EX I \Ex Basic Factory I Basic Factory I Basic Factory I Spaceport2 / I \ Ex Ex EX
Spaceport 1 has the P2-3 factorys clusterd around it and the P1 factorys shown send there pruduction to it. Spaceport 2 is for overflow storage from the extractors... and from Toons # 2- and 3 :P

As a guideline, I recommend not using planets over 25,000 km. Check their info.

Ah yes, the radius is definitely the issue. My Lava, Plasma, and Oceanic are 2800,3800,ans 4300 km, and the gas one is 47,000. Big difference.
I guess I'll start looking for a slightly smaller Gas planet if I can find one.
Thanks much for the replies :)

One more thing- I just went in to clear out that gas planet and build on another one, I deleted my command center, there are 0 buildings left on the planet, however the planet still counts as one of my colonies and I cant deploy my new command center on the other gas planet. Any thoughts?

When removing the buildins, remember to hit submit. And check to see that the command center is removed, removing the command center will remove the entire colony.
