While there is an abundance of crime in the world of EVE, it seems that there is something lacking on the punishment side of things. While players are free to harass, scam, and exploit other players, the people so grieved are not at liberty to exact justice.
Ore thieves may take your possessions, yet you cannot fire on them, despite the fact you may be 100m away watching the entire theft. In reality, were someone to steal your property, you would have every right to protect it with all necessary force.
Market scammers are often alts, blessed with anonymity. Players are given no recourse for justice, except to mention their names on these forums, which only draws mockery from the very people doing the scamming.
I can't help but wonder why EVE is so stacked in favor of criminals. I understand that CCP would like player crime to be part of the game, but shouldn't there be a system of player justice, too? Criminals are free to do as they desire, while players who would make them pay for their crimes have their hands tied by the watchful eye of CONCORD.

CCP has provided you with the tools you need to avoid crime. You're just to lazy/stupid to use them.
Ore Thieves can be easily thwarted with secure cans. The market now TELLS YOU in bright red text how high something is over the regional price, so anyone who falls for a market is obviously not paying attention like they should.
Pretty much all crime can be avoided by simply being careful and paying attention. CCP can't protect you from yourself.
You people whine to much. CCP nerfs crime every friggin patch and you still whine. Stop trying to force your playstyle on others and just PAY ATTENTION.

I simply think that if there were provisions in the game for players to take justice into their own hands, bounty hunting might become an extremely popular profession. Players should have the rights to defend their property as well as their person, in my opinion.

Just had a thought - personal war declarations.
ie. I pay 500k to declare war on another character. It dont matter whether hes in a noob corp or not
Its probably highly exploitable, but it could be cool. -- jamesw Rubra Libertas Militia

I think you should make sure u r unexploitable, your own security is your own responsability, you cant expect CCP to do something about every eventuality. Crime is here as in the real world and it is here to stay. One way of protecting your interests is teamwork. A couple of miners for instance and a hauler and dividing the profits it is not a massively online singleplayer role playing game ffs. grow up open your eyes and enjoy Havent been there, havent done it and NO, dont have the friggin T-shirt |

You know m8ey, that it's even worse to be criminal than a law abiding citizen.
Have you ever been a pirate? I have, and I've seen the other side also.. So, I must say you don't know what you're talking about.
Offcourse there are flaws, because this is just a game.. The mechanics will change in future tho, maybe it's better for us all then.

Ugh, two years later and I'm still reading these damnable posts. Crime is in the eye of the beholder. An ore theif can argue that you have no claim to anything you jettison in disposable containers. Someone who charges way over the average price of something can argue that you agreed to pay and accepted that price when you clicked 'buy'.
You wouldn't have lasted a day in beta, the game actually has sa***uards against being a victim now. The only problem is they assume you have common sense.

Well lets look at it from a less clouded and more factual point of view shall we?
I am an outlaw
Simply BEING in space means the following:
in 0.0 space the ods are even, i have a ship, you have a ship we both have guns and skills to back them up.
In low sec space we both have shiops and guns but sentryguns will retaliate against me when i shoot at you, while you can just shoot me without consequece. pro for you
in high sec space i have to travel in a POD because concord shoots me on sight. I have tin foil for armor and a soap bubble for shield. I have no guns and no means to mwd away from you and again you can shoot me without consequence. big pro for you
Ore:
You can use a secure container and your stuff is perfectly safe. ore thieves have no 'hackig' skill and so no way to take it. Pro for you
If you have a buddy with an indy then there is nothing to be stolen and an orethief cannot steal it out of your cargo so pro for you!
Orethieves are a type of people that have existed ever since the dawn of mankind. Its the people that see good money in the greed and lazyness of others and as we all an see it STILL works.
Have a budyd in an indy come haul your ore and give him half of the ore you mine.
Be less lazy and use a secure container.
The only problem here is YOU. yu have perfectly 100% safe ways to defend yourself from this so why do you choose to whine on the forums instead of using them?
I think the end conclusion is that criminals have it a hell of alot tougher then you so please learn some stuff before you complain maky?

It's the exact same things as what Zombie did, you may not attack in "safe-areas" (empire/within sentry range) without loosing your ship.

I have to agree with the author. Crime is now too easy with little chance of punishment for the bad guy. Take my profession, ore removal technician. In bygone days there were suicide kestrals dealing out 4 cruise missiles, maybe 4 more if Concord were slow to attend. These were ships to fear as they could lock you quick and in a slow moving indi, no fun.
Don't get me wrong, I don't enjoy being blown up and podded.....but its too easy now.
People bang on about getting their Carcal out to deal with me but 4 heavy missiles, even 8, won't touch me with any significant damage...

Edited by: Lord Titanus on 05/01/2005 13:52:47 Ok why people are responding to this thread with the typical response of "ITS YOUR OWN FAULT N00BBYYY" how about reading the actual post? beacuse hes right, crime is FINE, but when it happens to people we want some form of retribution, and not the kind of retribution you scammers and thieves think is enough "Well im not hiding behind a nub corp, declare war on me?" problem being that the corp he is in is say HUFF and hides behind PvP'ers of very good caliber, and as pirates/theives tend to prey on the weak or new to the game (relitivley) its kinda hard to go up against a PvP corp, and likely theyl just camp a system you use often and gank you to the stone age.
Pirates get off to easy, make the flag time 1 hour instead of 15 mins for attacking in .1-.4
Ore theives get off to easy, flag them to the person they 'take' from (Wont say steal)
Market and Escrow 'scams' are fine people whould pay more attention
None of these features are unreasonable the log off timer would prevent the pirate leaving the system for a while so players can have vengance/gather a force, force the pirates to use a proper PvP fleet and defend themselves if they want to be proper pirates, and solo pirates can just shoot down/ransom what they can and hide for a bit in system till they can leave, with the possibility of being found with probes.
and now follows the torrent of abuse from the low lives

Kendar- The key to Eve is that you are not some lost pup in teh wilderness who needs to be protected at all times by your mother or the police. You are a pod pilot. You are one of the 30 thousand or so most elite people in the known universe. If you're a miner or a trader, you're still one of the most elite miners or traders in the universe. You need to take care of yourself. Nobody gives a hoot about Paris Hilton's tax problems, and nobody cares about your jetcan mining problem. Even if you don't strap on some cannon and rock out in 0.0 with a PvP alliance, you still have to take care of yourself. _______________________________________________ "...which will become my sword in the very near future." I just canceled my account today.. I just wanted to solo in EVE and have a bit of fun. Didnt want to join any corps or have any obligations.. just casual gaming.. naturally it took FOREVER to get anything by myself and I finally got myself a new BC after I though.. Ive never really "explored" outside of the relativly safe zones. I decided to take my BC for a quick spin just enough to have fun.. but hopefully not far enough to get PKed..
I was wrong 2 minutes into "adventure" I got cornered by one of those ruffians.. with a gabilion isk on his head.. and died in 30 seconds.
I know Ill just get flamed as a silly noob cryer or whatever.. but It really would be nice to actually explore just a little bit.. there are 98454774397343897 systems out there.. and I couldnt make it passed the first 20 in my BC Noob |

I think that the other problem with crime is that IRL it is by definition illegal. The only illegal activities in Eve (discounting contaband for now) are things which would otherwise breach the ToS, and get you banned.

A battlecruiser is large and slow. Can you think of why those two characteristics may be a poor choice for something youre using as an exploration vehicle?
Next time, try a frigate (a rifter is good) with a microwarp drive. -------------------------------------------- CONCORD: Kneecapping Pilots for Misdemeanors Since 2003 |

I don't get this...
How is it you get so unlucky?
I have been in low sec zones for months and have sofar only once had a fatal run-in with low sec gankers...
I think you should rethink canceling because seriously you must have just been extreemly unlucky or just very uncautious (didnt check map for pod/shipkills, didnt check local, went to a 0.0 exit system ect)
Low sec space is perfectly viable for industrial corps and soloers. Just watch your back a bit and atleast CHECK before you jump into some place
I mean...if your running through some cave complex which has wild animals in it...wouldn't you be carefull before you jump into some ditch? Wouldn't you check whats in there first?? Its just the same in EVE

I think a good way for punishment would be to give bounty hunters more freedom to kill than what they have now. If a pirate is -4.9, you cant shoot him without taking a security hit.
What i would like to see is a corp be able to register (for a fee) with concord for the liscense to shoot people with a bounty over a certain amount, or a security rating low enough, say -2 or something. This would be done just like a declarence of war, the hunters would have access to shoot the people with the bounties, and the pirates would be free to defend themselves, like a lesse-faire sort of thing. Cuz basically if someone kills a pod, they are a murderer, but are still protected by the law, the statue of limitation is only 15 minutes. Seems kinda silly in real life.
