ok I have ben working with this company for a while now, and I have had a couple of days here and there off sick with stomach bugs and what not...
However I have noticed that I am not getting full pay for these sick days, is this normal? I could of sworn you were entitled to so many sick days at full pay BEFORE wages are reduced?! Or is it the amount of reduction that is limited? Or is it purely down to the contract itself? Can anyone help?

I think there is a minimum "statutory sick pay" of about ú40 a week, I am not sure who pays that, possibly your company recovers that from the government.
The level of pay depends on your contract I believe. I've worked somewhere before where if you had a day sick, you didn't get that days pay. I now work at a company that pays them with "discretion" i.e. if you have 20 sick days a year they stop paying the full amount at some point.

1. Google statutory sick pay.
2. Speak to your union rep.
3. Read, yes actually read, your employment contract.
4. ???
5. Stop posting nonsense on the forums.
Edit: HTFU!

Every company is different, but I believe the minimum is 3 days full pay, then SSP kicks in, per year.
I think most companies operate a 'managers descretion' policy. So, if someone doesn't go sick in two years and then calls in sick for two weeks, but all other employees in the same department have gone sick to the maximum alloted amount in the same period - then I think full pay would be fine.
In a world where 40% of sickness occurs on a Friday or a Monday, it's hard to take people seriously when they call in 'sick'.

I did google, but all I got was about the pay after you been of for so long..
The reason I ask is that everytime I have a sick day, I always have to fill otu a return to work form when I return!? and some of the questions it asks just does not seem to add up..
Funny you shoud mention a work contract, because I have never seen any contract, perhaps I should ask for a copy
Other reason I ask is that ALL sick days are at reduced pay, even the first of the year!!
Also My partner, if she has a single sick day, she does not get paid for that day, surely this is not right, as you will be putting your need for money ahead of your health!! I mean if you have bills to pay you need to work, you cannot afford a day off, and end up going to work ill, this not just bad for person in question, but would meann more likely others in same workplace are likely to fall ill if the illness can be caught

Basically it is down to your contract ... or lack of one.
Where I work we don't get paid for taking a sicky. This is clearly stated in our contracts. We can get statutory sick pay of course, but it is not the same as a full days pay.
What's more we work a 6 day week where I am and the management have noticed that the most popular day for calling in with 'flu like symptoms' is a saturday so they have adjusted the pay structure so that we get next to minimum wage for monday to friday with a huge bonus for working saturday. Bottom line is if we skive off on saturday we loose a HUGE amount of pay. Bastards. |

I have to fill otu a form every time I have a sick day, too. I get paid whatever, but the managers have warned me in the past I could lose that privilege. I had my flat flooded that year, which resulted in quite a lot of time off to deal with the fallout, and then secondary health issues as a result. I think I average five sick days a year over the last eight or so? I've been paid for all of them where I work.
It depends on your contract though, our temps don't get any sick pay at all. So they come in and make me ill instead lol
