Well, since I've now got a pretty important job in R/L and have teams of Windyplebs doing my bidding I've been twiddling my thumbs (and other bodily parts) from 9-5 so I thought I'd put my time to some constructive use.
As those of you who have read these posts over the years will probably know I'm a marketing director for a very large company and have always been interested in the relative perceptions of the various alliances in Eve. It's just a shame I manage to trash the reputation of every single alliance I join.
For about 4 years now I've done a 'roughly annual' (no, not 'roughly anal') survey of what the 'man on the street' (or should I say 'man in the fleet') thinks of Eve's supperpowers.
It's been slightly less than a year since I last did this, but so much has changed in the last 10 months or so that I figured it was worth a refresh. If you've never seen any of my previous surveys then the findings from last year's are here.
SO, WINDY, NEW INSIGHTS FOR 2010?
F*** all. Basically I've been churning out the same crap questions for 4 years now and I really can't be arsed to change them. Sue me.
WOW. AND WHAT SCIENTIFIC, STATISTICALLY UNIMPEACHABLE APPROACH DO YOU USE?
Easy. I sit in Jita, and spam convos at every random pilot that's there until I've finally got responses from over 100. Yes, it's a ****e method. No, it's not representative of the Eve population as a whole, but it's as good a way as any of finding out what the average Eve player thinks of alliances, and there will be as many alts of 0.0 alliance members there as there are empire huggers. I like to call my sample 'Joe Jita'.

Edited by: General Windypops on 18/10/2010 20:38:33 MOST FAMOUS ALLIANCE
This first question is intended to identify the alliance that 'stands out' from all others. That's not to say it's perceived as the 'best' or that it constitutes a value judgment, simply that it's the first one that comes to mind.
1. Pandemic Legion (16%) 2. IT (12%) 3. Goonswarm (7%)
Hrrm. Mildly surprised by this. FOr the sake of clarity I pooled together people who referred to 'Goonswarm'/ 'Goons' or Bob / IT etc. Pandemic Legion and IT? Reasonably predictable. Goonswarm? Goes to show that there's a massive lag between perception and reality, and that in empire space people don't tend to follow the ins and outs of alliance activity.
____________________
MOST POWERFUL ALLIANCE
Perception of the alliance with the most military might.
1. Northern Coalition (24%) 2. IT (16%) 3. Pandemic Legion (8%)
A recurrent trend from previous years here, in that the NC are (rightly or wrongly) considered to be a 'single entity'. This probably isn't a bad thing in terms of the perception of the component alliances as it suggests that people believe them to be constant and unified.
____________________
MOST FUN ALLIANCE
Territory and combat prowess aside, which alliance has more giggles than niggles.
1. Pandemic Legion (19%) 2. BoB / IT (13%) 3. Atlas (7%)
Urrrm, there it is again. Not sure how much fun Atlas have necessarily had in the last few months, but this is how the Jita Massive see things. Worth being aware that there was massive fragmentation in
answers on this one, and there was a consistent (unsurprising) trend for people to claim that their own alliance was the most 'fun'.

MOST MEMORABLE 2010 'MOMENT'
- Goonswarm folding
A slight contradiction here with the findings of the 'most famous alliance' questions, and as usual there were a huge variety of answers here (because everyone's judgement of what is 'important' is entirely based on what they tend to do in game. A pretty predictable favourite though.

RESEARCHER'S OBSERVATIONS
As per the last Jita 100 survey, we're a million miles from the 'glory days' where the big 0.0 alliances were viewed with reverence and awe. People are pretty critical of alliances, and fairly cynical about whether they're even remotely different from each other. One other continued trend was the fragmentation of answers. When I did this 3 years ago people consistently mentioned the same 'big' alliances time and time again. Now, however, there's much more diversity in the responses than in previous years.

If anything, people just spamming NC have no real grasp of the situation. Not that they or PL arent powerful, its just that no one put the eastern-map russian block in.

Actually, 'roughly anal survey' was the better description, although 'extremely anal survey' would be more accurate.

So what you are saying is that people find scamming, trolling and lol/fail-cascading 'important'? __________________________________________________
