Let's make this a fun and entertaining post and throw out the knowledge that it's part of game mechanics. Yeah... straight out the window... :)
We all know after downtime some belts respawn and some rocks that have shrunk have grown again. Why is this? Do you have any entertaining theories as to what's going on?
I think there are some giant space creatures that inhabit all of EVE space. We'll never be able to see them or confront them as they only show up during Downtime. The belts are where they deposit the waste products of their biological processes and they do it there because the gravity wells in the area will make sure their "deposits" don't spread all over the area and contaminating the rest of space.
Of course now we're mining this stuff, and as a result we're flying crappy ships, shooting at each other with crappy guns, and hitting each other with crappy bullets while protecting ourselves with crappy armor. :)

THEY DO EXIST.
I don't care what the others say; I've seen them. Everyone else says I should take a break, that I've been working too hard... mining day after day. "Seeing and hearing nothing but your mining lasers for hours can do that to you!" they say!
They think I'm crazy. But let me tell you:
I'm know what I saw!
You don't see them all at once... no... they tease you! You only see glimpses out of the corner of your eyes. A tail here, maybe even catch their eyes staring at you before they disappear!
The others in my corporation won't believe me. You know why? They've gotten to them. Everyone I try to tell, try to warn! I find that they've already gotten to them too!
I'm the only one that knows the truth. That they are out there, waiting for us.

When a boy asteroid likes a girl asteroid, they retire behind other asteroids and go at it like rabbits on speed. After they are done they lost millions and millions of micro or even nano meteorites which now drift freely in the belt. They start lumping together through sheer force of gravity and keep growing until they're old enough to go at it like rabbits themselves.
All of this takes place in a maximum of one hour. Sometimes they have orgies though and it can take up to as much as a couple of days for space to return to normal.

same way you or i might feed the ant farm we keep on the dresser they "feed" us more roids. keeps us nice and concentrated for their observation.

Let me put it this way...I have a mining barge called "Preperation A" for all those nasty "roids" in my system.

I got a cool story for you bros:
When I first joined Eve, I warped to a belt and there was nothing to mine there. I thought it was all gone for good, never coming back. The trail of conclusions I jumped to over the next few days led me to be mining in a Bantam in Old Man Star. Luckily I had made enough trips in my bantam full of Jaspet to buy a new Bantam when I was killed. Shortly after that I found out asteroids do respawn.

There's a dark companion star in each system, hurling asteroids towards the planets.
Seriously, all systems with stargates are binary.

Dropbear installed a code for their respawn so there is a steady stream of miners in the game, and miners need something to do when they are.. mining, like.. read Dropbear's chronicles n stories!

Wow... by confirming everything you just made things more mysterious for me... So you've actually met these so called "space whales"? And you've actually seen Chribba leaving behind leftover asteroids in a rather "unconventional" manner? And Dork Matter stars hurling rocks everwhere after having a bad night out partying where they had too much antimatter/matter mixed drinks with alcohol nebulas mixed in??
Okay... Was just joking about the Dark Matter Star partying. Can anyone even see those things anyway? :)
