Merlins. The pinnacle of caldari frigate design, and lets face it, everyone likes their looks.
Back in the day, a merlin was every newbs goal. My friend was the victim of a pirate attack once. He organised a gang consisting of two ibises, a bantam (me), a condor, and a merlin. Everyone was in awe, exclaiming "nice ship" and etc. Then we joined up with an Osprey! We were truly invincible that day. </nostalgia>
But my point, is that I can see no point of a merlin. Unless it's for a newbie who wants a new ship that can mine AND fight. The kestrel is just plain better at combat. Merlins are only ever bought by experienced players if they want to make a Harpy with it :/
Are Merlins for newbs only?

They are cheap and can be of use especially if all your gang buddies are in more visable ships that may get targetted first.

Back before Exodus and destroyers came along, I used one for showing off against cruiser spawns. A T2 small shield booster, the appropriate hardener, and a cap battery make sure it can soak up quite a bit of damage.
For the money, it's one tough little ship. But yeah, it needs love nowadays.

Dont know why, but i like my merlin. Lot's of players underestimate its strenghts and die

try fitting it differently than other frigs

Merlin is a nice tough ship, i recently won a frig tournament in my corp with a merlin against 2 other merlins, tristan, punisher and a kestral. Kestrals seem to be the ships for noobs who just fit 4 launchers with no other equipment and think its great that they can kill something, a merlin with the right equipment can own any other frig out there.

I lost a destroyer 2 one...and he didnt even had scrambler, just ECM burst and stuff....

**Sigh** I loved my merlin... till I switched to pvp, just to damn slow, great gun ship tho. And it looks awesome, best looking Cald ship IMO.. I imagine (I had some success) u can stick some 150's and 2 launchers, 1 ballistic or mag stab and hit w/ iron above 20k and snipe some frig tacklers getting to close to ur bs's, but other than that I havent found much use fer it.

I used to ransom cruisers with one.
Since I cant use a MWD and an AB anymore, and since missiles cut inside my orbit, thats not really possible anymore.

merlins are great... i love them!
hunt with them in low security space all the time. now i've got harpy and hawk, though. so they only see action when i am doing frig level complexes with corp. but, i am the lead man, so it takes all/most of the damage and never whines to me about it... 8)
there is a fine, but dissasterous line between a fart and a shart. i suggest you make sure which side you want to be on... |

Regarding damage and tanking, merlin is very nice.
Of course the big brothers hawk and harpy are now the way to go.
