So I know there are a lot of folks who might be a bit bored with eve and other mmo's out at the moment, so I was wondering what the thoughts were on the new mmo's coming out in the near future. (all fantasy mmo's out right now like WoW and Aion are pretty much crap, it's just rush to end game and then roflstop noobs at end game, then get bored and quit).
So here's a list of the ones I'm looking forward to hearing about:
1) TERA 2) Blade and Soul 3) Jumpgate Evolution 4) Black prophecy 5) Guild wars 2
Then there are the other ones like Star Wars: KOTR and a few others that I can't think of at the moment.
Think they'll crash and burn? Think they'll do well? I know FFXIV just pretty much crash and burned, but why might these also.

Blade and Soul looks fairly interesting to me as well. It also looks like a mmo that could easily be played using a joystick instead of keyboard/mouse.

You forgetting APB, that didn't just crash and burn but also took out a schoolhouse Signature locked for editing a moderator's warning. Zymurgist |

TERA is a big fantasy game. I hope it doesn't have the same grind till endgame gameplay because it has a nifty new feature:
FPS WIZARDS! \o/
OK I actually didn't see any wizards in game when I played it at PAX but you do have to worry about things like weapon arcs, using the targeting reticle when shooting arrows, and stuff like that. So if there are wizards I'm sure you will get to FPS fireballs.
I'm burnt out on playing fantasy MMOs but I would give TERA a try.

I honestly thought that for the mage classes in TERA, I saw some sort of targeting system somewhere on the web (maybe on their website?)
I'm just excited about tera because of the facts you mentioned, it's not just another click and wait MMORPG. The only thing that really worries me about it is the fact that it's a korean MMORPG, and they are notorious for grind.
EDIT: I heard APB was... awful. Dunno about the specifics
Also: I like the look of blade and soul because it looks like Tekken online . A lot of folks in the MMO community dislike the fact that it's "instanced pvp", though I honestly think that's the best idea ever, considering the ganking that occurs in a lot of fantasy MMO's.

The sandbox genre needs a "World of Warcraft" hit. Need a game that pulls all the great features of Sandbox games, polishes them, combines them, and maybe brings a few new things to the table. Most sandbox games these days do a couple things well, but lack on other features. For instance, EVE lacks the physical representation of the character, allowing players to become far more attached to their characters, potentially playing for longer stretches of time. Thankfully, this is getting remedied with Incarna.
In the end, I'm willing to wait. _________________________________________ Support the "Seed Primae on the market and ORE LP Stores" proposal! Click here |

I sort of agree. I think the main reason that 99% of fantasy mmo's have been a crapfest since WoW is because all of them were pretty much exact copies of WoW with a few new twists, which weren't enough to cover up the fact that they were WoW with a new graphics engine. In the end, WoW was nothing more than a complete copy of Everquest with a few modifications to make the gameplay smoother.
This is why I'm excited about the new line of fantasy MMO's coming out. They've all pretty much said that they're getting away from the point and click and wait mechanics, and it looks like some of them are getting away from the healer/dps/tank system (which I hate with a fiery passion, it was ok the first time but now every uncreative game developer has beaten it to death). With games like Blade and Soul though, there will be no healer/dps/tank, and it will be more of an action game.

Edited by: Annie Anomie on 24/10/2010 22:23:25 TOR looks pretty horrible and that's even without the microtransactions.
TERA is interesting in concept.
I like the idea of skill based gameplay. I'm sure they'll compromise on that and WoW it up a bunch pre-release though.
Also I'm wondering about the PVP. It currently says there are PVP servers with world PVP so so I'm keeping an eye on that one.
edit I think copying WoW turns out badly for MMOs because Blizzard already did a pretty good job of refining that generation of MMOs concepts into WoW and making the whole thing streamlined and user friendly.
Copying it gives you a copy of a copy with lower production values and competing with Blizz for WoW's existing customer base is silly because you're not going to out-Blizz Blizz.
Even Blizzard are doing something radically different for their next MMO.

They've just said they're doing something different.

I forget where exactly but I read they were looking at a bunch of new concepts.
I suppose it could be World of Bejewelled or something but I'm interested to see.

Everyone always says they're doing something different. No press release ever says "It's basically a copy of the crap that looked workable from the past, with new textures"

I don't buy this getting attached to physical representations of characters being something lacking in eve. you heard people cry and rage when their ship gets blown up?, they get pretty attached believe me.

Hah yep, I will agree with you on that. But many people dislike station spinning ships. I played EVE for years and I station spin the 5 same ships. Gets old. People want to see a physical representation of their characters. While difficult to show you and prove, I see many people on different gaming forums passing up EVE, citing the lack of an avatar as one such detriment to their potential enjoyment. _________________________________________ Support the "Seed Primae on the market and ORE LP Stores" proposal! I'm also quite jaded.
Probably for the better, anything can look good set to Lux Aeterna. Best to just wait and see what sinks or swims, instead of getting excited.

Well, we can hope that some new mmo's in the future will give you a better outlook.
I honestly am looking forward to incarna, as it will add a new interesting dimension to the game. Also, I'll be able to play a minigame while I wait for skills to train up. Maybe even run a store/strip joint. I look forward to that if it's implemented.
