So with the whole Alien FX light feature that was added--it never really worked. However, I don't really play EVE on my laptop too much so I just ignored it for a long time. However, on Friday, I logged on with my M15x laptop and something with the lighting went all wacky, and now my keyboard has been flashing blue lights for three days.
Interestingly, Alien FX is also disabled somehow, and cannot be re-enabled. Also, the client no longer shows the "Enable Alien FX whatever" checkbox in the options menu.
Please help me return my keyboard to static green glowyness.

While I'm sorry that your keyboard(s) broke, I think you're pointing your finger in the wrong direction. You see, the code to power your keyboard generally comes in an API shipped directly from Alienware or whomever /they/ contracted the flashy lights to. Even if Eve programmed it based on an API spec from the ground up and fried your BIOS, how many component manufacturers ship a hardware BIOS that can be 'fried' from software? Assuming it IS a BIOS, my advice to you is to stop assuming it's fried and to contact the manufacturer to see if it can be flashed to be back in line. If not, I recommend sending it into Alienware to be fixed and reviewing your warranty. While frustrating, remember that games shouldn't be able to break your computers, that is just bad hardware design. |

warranty's expired, yo. Even if its bad hardware design, the feature was designed by CCP specifically for this hardware. So if it does fry the hardware, don't you think CCP should've figured that out ahead of time?

Edited by: Grez on 27/10/2010 20:18:23 Not EVE's fault. Sounds like an issue with a iffy power capacitor fluctuation and now regulating power to the LED's properly (happens with old Logitech G15's).
All EVE does is make use of the API. There's no way an API can break the keyboard unless the API is flawed, and that'd be Alienware's fault. ---

Quote: Patch notes for Tyrannis 1.0.5
Deployed Thursday, September 2, 2010
General Fixes
* Some players are experiencing a crash when starting the EVE client since Tyrannis 1.0.4. This has been corrected. Users with this issue will have to manually download the patch from www.eveonline.com and apply it as normal. * When using an Alienware M17X laptop the client would crash while selecting a character. This has been fixed. * A new command line switch has been added that will disable the lighting effects on Alienware machines that support it. It is ô/nolightfxö.

Edited by: LiBraga on 05/11/2010 01:20:59 All hardware dies... its only a matter of time.
When your warrenty expires you should expect the device to fail soon. Warrenties are generally based upon when the number of devices start to fail exponentially minus a month.
If something the average failure rate increase dramaticaly before a set time then generaly the device is redesigned. If it survives the Quality testing then its sold.
This is why somethings have 3 month, a year, 2 year or lifetime warrenties.
Years ago my laptop died whilst I was playing EVE (Red Moon Rising if you can recall to back then), was it EVEs fault... no. It was because I used it for everything, everyday. The hours it was operational greatly exceeded the minimum set by the manufacturer.
Sometimes you'll get things dead on arrival or perfect example... I was downgrading the OS on a new laptop at work. It powers off 1/2 way through installing XP (atm I'm sorting the offline file issue with W7 before rolling it out). It wont turn on. Holding the Power button for 5s makes the keys flash but thats it. It's not MS's fault. It's a substandard part that wasn't detected during assembly. Probably a capacitor.
Story short... man up, go buy a replacement. --------------- What! Caldari have dps now... noooo Aye, T2 HAMs FTW!!!!! |

I did that ... and starting EvE broke it again ... now on 3rd Keyboard I am not blaming CCP but its a Alien Ware API issue ..
Think CCP have now addressed in the last patch by providing command line option to disable AlienFX support as detailed in this thread
