Why would anyone take it so seriously? Surely if they could apply themselves that well they could be making a fortune in real life?

In most cases, it is. The only sanctioned way of "bying ISK" is through GTC/PLEX trading. ùùù ôIf you're not willing to fight for what you have in ≡v≡à you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.ö ù Karath Piki |

The guy i was thginking about with more than 10 trading accounts was using them to make enough isk to buy a personal titan, and who is to say that the traders in eve dont trade real markets, there are alot of similarities between real world markets and the market and trading in eve.

Edited by: WMunny on 27/10/2010 11:59:21 Would it be fair to say, then, that one of the reasons to earn money is to sell time codes, so as to be able to play the game free of charge?

Indeed this is a fact, there are some guys, lets say students who live on a shoe string but have lots of time to make isk ingame, they buy plex to play for free, and then you have the professionals who make more than enough money but have very little time to play and make isk, they sell plex to buy shinnies.
Its somewhat of a symbiosis

In the real world there are traps to keep you poor and a much more difficult game field compared to eve. It is possible and indeed some of the people that play eve also play in real life markets, but there are much more fierce competence, much more slim margins and much more risk of failure. Add to that that in the real markets information don't run as free as here, all condensed in the same place and no one profiting from inside information. Technology also counts and initial founds that in eve can be adquired easily by other means, and illimited resources, no expenditures, slow market that let people react opposed to computer-runned, every commodity is exactly the same with no quality differences, free storage without decay over time... There are so much things different in eve and real life that it almost looks like eve were a game where you play a much more simplified version of it, designed to let you progress instead of ripping you of your money for other's gain.
