My Western Digital WD5000AAKS 500GB SATA is failing... No terrible worries, not losing too much.
Booting up takes long and a message about "3rd Slave Hard Disk Error" displays before pressing F1 to load Windows. Occasionally it still gets detected and I'm able to play movies off of it still. Most of the time it doesn't.
Bought this thing about less than a year ago. Some of the lower Newegg reviews say that it just lasts about 4-6 months. Anyone else have experience with these drives?
I can't go SSD yet (expen$ive atm) so I'm looking for advice on a brand/model that's about 500GB, maybe 1TB if it isn't much more expensive. Suggestions? There isn't much competition out there, is there? Just Seagate, which also owns Maxtor (or the other way around?)...
Thanks! ____________________

hmm not sure i can help but i do like your clever use of the dollar sign in place of the 's' in the word 'expensive' lol, much like anybody talking about microsoft in a derogatory manner gains my immediate respect for the same replacement
anyway i think thats the model of hard drive i have two of in a raid-0, so thanks for making me sad

Luck of the draw, just claim the warrranty. If you're splashing out for another extra HDD, you might as well set up a mirror RAID.
P.S Striping exposes your setup to controller hadware failure, rare as it may be. |

i have very little "important stuff" and that which is, i back up as needed, anything on my 1tb raid is basically expendable or obtainable.
i have always backed up stuff as i move drives, get new backups etc. i can't recall one time when i have actually needed any of my archive stuff. photos are about the only thing i make sure to backup and keep. raid 0 works for me.

Check the power supply. Maybe the power supply is failing and not giving it enough juice.
You could buy external enclosure and turn it into external or backup drive. I did that when I was upgrading my iBook laptop, I put 120 GB drive into the iBook and the old 20 GB drive into external enclosure.

Blast. Why do hard drives have to be so hit and miss??!
Just upgraded to a 750 watt PSU from a 550 watt, juice is not the issue.
I thought about the enclosure but didn't think it would work. Will try it out now that you mentioned it. Will pick one up from ebay. ____________________

i had 3 of those drives fail within 2 months of getting them (click of death)..... awful QA at western digital with regard to that model of drive.
they were replaced by warrenty but in the end WD gave up on that drive model and gave me a 1tb drive instead. SIG: if my message has spelling errors its cos i fail at typing properly :P |

A little bit off topic but I had 4 Seagate ST31500541AS(1.5tb) get the click of death a few weeks after buying them and now a few months after Seagate replaced them one of the replacements got the click of death and stopped working and another one is starting to click.

Samsung Spinpoint 500GB here, been using it for, what, 2 years i think, works perfectly, no problems. Seagate are good too, 1.5TB in my server and performing well, 24/7 on time.

It's still more or less luck of the draw. Your failure probability is higher for models known to have exceptionally high failure rates. Just keep alert of the internet buzz on HDD drama.

Edited by: Blue Binary on 30/10/2010 23:49:36 I had a WD5000AAKS for about 1+ years; it still works fine. It was used as a secondary backup hard drive so I can't comment on it's reliability as a primary workhorse.
A simple thing as a SATA cable can cause read errors and data corruption with intermittent detection failures. Eliminate this possibility first.
Try the Western Digital LifeGuard diagnostics tool.
As you have had it for less than a year it will still be under warranty. You can RMA it for a recertified replacement, no questions asked. It takes about 4-5 days for the standard replacement option.
