Evening o7 I'm buying a Nightmare really soon and had a discussion with some corpmates if I should use Tachyons or Pulses. I've always thought Tachyons was the obvious choice, but they insisted that pulses are better. I didn't like the sound of that since I think Tachyons are so ****ing badass. Anyway, I tried some fittings in EFT and found out that: Pulses have better tracking. They have about the same DPS at short range. Tachyons have much higher dps at long range. Tachyons have much better range. Tachyons are more badass.
Since the t2 beam crystals are crap and that the DPS difference is minimal (5% with Spec V - which I done have) I was thinking on using faction Tachyons (lower capacitor).
Here is the fitting I was thinking.
HIGH: 4 x Imperial Tachyons 1 x Tractor 1 x Drone link
MED: 1 x XL Shield Boost (Pith A?) 1 x Heavy Cap booster II 1 x Photon Scattering (Pith A?) 1 x Heat w/e hardener (Pith A?) 1 x Invul (navy ?) 2 x Tracking Computers II or Navy
LOW: 1 x Tracking Enhancer 4 x Navy Heatsinks
RIGS: 2 x CCC 1 x CCC II
DRONES: 5 x Hobgoblin II 5 x Hammerhead II
Will be used for: High Sec MISSIONS
So basicly. Will this fitting work well? If not, why? Do YOU prefer pulse lasers OR Tachyons? Why? If you prefer pulse, how would you fit it?
Thanks in advance!

I'd probably go for Tachs since most stuff will be dead before it gets close enough that tracking is an issue.

Tachs, no question.

clearly tachs, but why choose. use both
and by that i mean equip for the mission, tachs for most stuff, but missions like damsel really screams for pulses

Edited by: Thorian Baalnorn on 28/10/2010 20:29:36 I would go with Pulses for a couple of reasons: 1) If tracking becomes an issue its going to become a rather large issue with tachs. I dont know about Amarr spec missions but ive done alot of missions and since your usually in deadspace you dont often need to hit at 50-75 KM. In face i find most ships spawn within 40 KM. you get double the tracking with mega pulse IIs, thats nothing to blow off.
2) With scorch on the fit below your optimal is 55 KM with 15km fall off. 70KM should be sufficent for missions. I dont recall any missions in which i had to hit a ship at 80 km. Your pushing 825 dps with scorch , 900 with multis and over 1000 with IN multis the latter two at 18 and 15 KM. Using Imperial tachs your hitting at 804 for normal crystals and 925 for IN multis @ 40 and 37. Scorch hits harder with twice the tracking and 15KM extra optimal over multis with the trade off of you get 7km more falloff with tachs. tachs have damage at range when using IM crystals. Whereas for short range pulse hits harder. But i dont see that bit of extra damage at range nor that 7 km falloff as a good reason for tachs Not when you have scorch that hits at a better optimal with better tracking for 80- 90 extra DPS. Your going to deliver more dps to targets overall using Pulse IIs. While at range tachs may out dps pulses slightly pulses will make up for it on the short range and on faster moving targets.
Your missions will go faster using pulses with scorch and IN crystals IMO.
This is a fit i used for my stats based on your fit.

I stuck mostly with your fit. It seems to be a bit overtanked to me. You could downgrade your hardners to CN and save about 1/2 bil but lose 11k EHP and 300 dps tank against sansha. As fit and against sansha:
84k EHP 952 Sustained tank/ 1324 max tank 824 DPS @ 55km/15 KM using scorch. 58KM/16KM with range script 1033 DPS @ 18km / 15KM . 19Km /16KM with range script using IN Multis. 3m 58 sec of cap running everything. Cap Stable @ 52% not running shield or cap booster.
I did NOT include drone damage in my DPS.
Edit: As the poster hinted at above. Guns are not set in stone. You can try both and see which works better. Or maybe tachs work better for some missions and pulses for others. I would still probably use pulses myself. You have Npc close in range and tracking is an issue and thats just to big of an issue for me for the slight tradeoff tachs give.
Also you should always run rat spec hardners as they use less cap ( 2 rat spec hardners use about the same as 1 invuln) and boost the right resist more.

Your tach fit is my fit ( with rather cheaper tank ), never had tracking issues with it although I'm almost maxed out for NM. Pulse NM irritates me by never quite being what I want it to be. I'd just try both.

I'd fit pulse, (and a point of course) kill all my corp mates, leave corp, and then fit tachyons and run missions smugly while smoking a nice cigar.
tl;dr fit tachys for pretty much every mission but damsel*
*hell I just use tachs cuz I cba to change my fit.
oh and your fit is fine, pretty much exactly what I use. will work just fine with all t2 tank, I like having faction damage mods.

+1 for Tachs. Anything else on a Nightmare is foolish imho.
T2 Tachs + Large Beam Spec IV (of V if you haven't got anything else better to train for) + Imp Navy Multis = awesomesauce.
Train for T2. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

try both out, find out what works best for what. then, you can tell your corp mates your opinions...it's YOUR ship.

I've tried both and tachs are better for 90% of missions.
If you're getting a nightmare you'll want to splash some isk on faction heat sinks and a decent shield booster, the rest can be just t2.

This setup is highly capable, almost 1000 DPS at 45km and is not a gank magnet either due to being mostly t2 fit.

Use pulse only on those pesky drone missions and in Angel Extravaganza perhaps. There is no reason to not use both systems depending on the situation. There is also this Sansha mission which has a lot of frigs and cruisers around turret defended outposts, you could use pulse on that one as well. Most missions you really want to be able to lay on the damage from afar though.

Do we really have to have a pulse v. tachyon thread every week? Tachyons are better in like 95% of the situations, tracking is almost never an issue, like the guy above me I like pulse for (some) drone missions simply because there are just so many drone cruisers that like to orbit closeish and it's the one time when tachyons can't just lolwtfpewpew everything on approach. ________________

Even for such missions, like Rogue Drone Harrasment, I've never had a problem with tracking with a single TE and a TC with a tracking script using Tachs on my NM.
Tachs will always be superior.
