Sorry if the question has already been answered somewhere else but I can't find it.
What's the difference in the quantity of raw material being extracted between a colony in high sec and one in low sec. Does it make a huge difference going from a 0.5 system to a 0.4 or 0.3?
Right now, in a 0.5 system, I can extract about 10-12k units of raw materials on a 5 hours cycle if the concentration of the raw mat is good, and I get about 5-6k units per 5 hours cycle for low concentration.
What are those numbers look like in low sec?

While I cannot provide numbers since I have not really sat down and compiled them but...
When PI first came out I set up a test in high-sec with 5 planets (1 was in .4). Now I have dipped my toe in low-sec with five planets (.2 - .4) and the increase was very noticable.
Not really useful but just adding my two cents.

Edited by: Sturmwolke on 29/10/2010 13:14:56 40-50K total / 5hrs in a 0.2. If you surveyed them up right, you can get away with 8 extractors supporting 2 advanced factories for a 1 day period. It may be possible to run a third advanced factory (for the same 1 day cycle) if you have elite CC, depending on how you configure your setup.
Minimal clicking (but still too much).

When PI initially came out, Null was said to have "normal" concentrations, lowsec was half of null, and hisec was half of lowsec (meaning 1/4 of null).
It's not hard and fast, since each planet is unique, but... in hisec on extraction planets I could usually only fill 2 processors a day, and in null I can do 8 or more, so this seems to be born out.

That amounts to like 250k/day...which is HORRIBLE given the work involved (if you include hauling). You can fly to any 0.1-0.2, kill 2 BC within 5min, and get the same return for a LOT less work. You can do it in any cruiser/af.
Or you could jump into 0.0 once a weak, kill a single BS rat within 3min, and be done with it. Also a lot less work. PI profits don't fit the amount of work involved currently. It's new, so people try it...but one of the worst income generators. _______________

I am in a wormhole and run 4-day cycles, because I don't want to spend too much time on it. I get anywhere from 900 to 1500 units of raw materials per extractor per cycle (1 hour).
I am running PI with two accounts, all six characters. With a four day cycle I make about 100 advanced items, plus POS fuel. For all 6 chacacters to reset extractors and haul it take about 2.5 hours.

I find that a lot of .4s don't differ that much from .5s but once you get to .3 and below it gets good. I run all extractors on 23 hr cycles. For comparison I get 1400 noble metals per cycle and 2000 aqueous per cycle in a .2 and I get 550 planktic colonies and 900 heavy metals per cycle in a .8 in high sec.
Just show info on nearby low sec systems and check out the length of the white bars and the size of the hotspots and compare them to your highsec planets. You'll be thinking wtf high sec sux pretty fast. - It's not "Play through a pre-set story, become stronger, do endgame". Gameplay is open ended, and you make your own story. Unless you're too afraid of 'pvp grief' to do anything relevant |

Go out to edge of hisec and scan as deep into losec as you can. You will see a much greater concentration of resources on losec planets.
In a .1 system it is fairly easy to get 2100 P0 per cycle on 5 hour cycles. This translates into 1500 P0 per cycle on 23 hour cycles.
Do not attempt losec PI unless you have a Blockade Runner or Covert Ops scout alt witha T1 cloak on your hualer. The Ebil Piwates know all about PI now and they love to eat Bestowers and IteronVs.
If you do losec PI at all, may as well go for the nice .1 systems, although there are some .2 planets that have almost the same resources.

If you want to play "Planetville" and make a load of cash, get all 3/6 characters on the 1/2 accounts to 4/4 on the CC skills with one 4/4 on the 2 planetology skills and head to a C1 WH with a static HS. There you will enjoy 5 hour rates of 2100-3400. 2100 is for my gas planets as I have nothing else that provides electrolytes. Normal for me is 2500-2800 per 15 minute run on a 5 hour cycle.
Use a medium or large POS and work on passive income. Just watch out for roving gangs and use d-scan to scan every 3 seconds.

I don't know about the 5 hour cycles, but in .1 its 60-100k per 23 hour cycle.

But it's in addition to killing stuff. I usually reset the extractors in the morning while sipping the morning coffee where I don't have the time to do anything decent. Once a week I fly out and empty the launchpad. It's free ISK man (*) I might not make as much as a dedicated PI jockey earns, but it is so little work that it doesn't bother me much. And if it bothers me too much I simply skip a day of resets - nothing bad happens as opposed to POS work where you lose your raw materials and fuel if you wait too long.
(*) This sentence just added to annoy fans of the word "opportunity cost"

Mabye a C5 has better exration rates but 2500 is the very low end of what I pull. With adv Plantolgy 4 I find spots of 3000 to 3500 for most things I pull per 15 min 5 hour cycle .... and one very nice 4400 reactive gas spot that i am afraid to talk about in case its a bug.

*scan..... scroll through list*
Pfft I think ...
*scan..... scroll through list*
.. that people over ...
*scan..... scroll through list*
... emphisise how dangerious WH space can be
*scan..... scroll through list* .... combat prob RUN AWAY (this is even funner when you have corp mates that think its funny to "pratice" scanning you down)

He deserves the industrial KM if he has waited that long or has gotten that lucky.
I find the rate just varies depending on what you are extracting and from what planet type you are extracting it from. Anecdotally, it seems the higher the class of WH, the better the rates. I could be very wrong though.

It has only happend once so far.... but with only one storm planet in system its a great place to hang out and wait for a cargo hold of P4 to fly buy. 100 plus Organic mortars will buy the sneaky bastard something nice.

I make a couple of billion per month doing PI, using 4 chars with all 4 on lvl 4 CC. It took me some finding out and reading into, but the result is a passive income leaving enough to compete with them ISK-selling Russ... I mean, leaving enough to satisfy my pew pew needs. If the amount of ISK is not according your PI-efforts, then you are not doing it right. I could elaborate here how I do it. But I wont. Ya gotsta put in the dirt yaself.

I thought this too until i lived into a class 5 with some people i know, i think its all random as long as it is in certain perameters, i was getting less across the board using the same type of planets i had in a c2.

Trick is to work out what in the supply chain is your limiting factor. Which is not too difficult to do as just work out which is the most expensive to buy (whatever tier you are looking for). Lets say your factory complexes keep running out of industrial fibre for example (having situated your nice factory is hi-sec, next to some low-sec systems). Set up a nice industrial fibre extraction plant in low-sec (the low-sec ones seem to produce about 5-10 times the amount of whatever complaired to the hi-sec ones). Visit once a week nearly server downtime, and the jobs done. Of course this is nowhere near as efficient as running PI in a wormhole or in lowsec; but it offers a relatively easy source of Isk for those that don't care to run risks or don't have access to "end-game" stuff.

I am just looking into PI after renewing my account and I am asking myself this very same question...0.5 or low sec (since if your going low sec it might aswell be a 0.2/0.1)
My first issue is whether or not I can be bothered to 'watch my back' while doing something as menial as moving products between planets. I have about 6 months worth of skills but they are all over the place after trying different things so I'm not too low sec capable. (40 days away from the prowler which is ideal for this)
the second idea i keep having is that most low sec PIers seem to run 23 hour cycles and i can compensate in 0.5 by running 30 minute cycles. (my game time atm consists of mining, refining and hauling so it's not too much of an issue for me to go back every 30 minutes while im playing)
Does this seem sensible to you lot?
Also one last thing. I haven't looked into it completely but if you run low sec or nul sec colonies can it get to the point where your extracting so much raw material that you simply dont have the power grid available to run enough factories to recieve it all and are there fore limited to 23 hour or 96 hour cycles? Potentially meaning a dedicated high sec player can close the profit gap between him and the low sec player?

A "dedicated" high-sec player can compete reasonably well with a "relaxed" low-sec player. It's a matter of the effort you're willing to put into it.
When I first started I would run a few 30-min cycles and then 3 5-hr cycles each day. With 15 planets (3 chars x 5 planets) burnout didn't take too long to find me. I had a few spare minutes after setting all the extractors before the 30-min cycle was over and it was time to start again. Now I work strictly on 5-hr cycles, running 3 or 4 per day. Production in 0.3 space was far better than .5 - .7, and reasonably safe in a Crane. Unfortunately running planets as fast as you can also means a lot more trips out there, thus increasing your risk. It becomes a balancing act of risk-reward-effort-enjoyment. I'm operating in a C1 w-space now and getting far better extraction rates than I was in .3 space with less risk.
I can see the feasibility of running a 23-hr cycle, but can't bring myself to do it since 2 5-hr cycles will extract more. The "click-fest" doesn't bother me with 5-hr cycles, but I suspect that's probably a driving force behind most people that run 23-hr cycles.
