Is there any command switch to force eve to use directx 11 instead of 9?

Edited by: Xindi Kraid on 30/10/2010 06:52:19 If you are running windows 7 you are ALWAYS using DX11 (if you aren't using 7 then you don't have DX11) what you may or may not use are DX 11 features. THink of it like this: When you run a program written for XP on your Win 7 Machine, launching that program does not suddenly cause you to run XP, but the program can't make use of any of the new features of the newer operating system. Direct X works the same way. EvE doesn't use any of the DX 11 features, so even though you have DX 11 on your machine, it can't take advantage of the new eyecandy protocols.
THe only way to get that is for the Devs to reprogram EvE. That's not likely to happen for a while since so many people still use XP (and thus DX9) so dropping DX9 support is suicide and adding support for multiple versions of Direct X would complicate things. As a player you can't make EvE use the new, advanced, features added in DX 11 any more than you can make Starcraft (a sprite based game) use 3d graphics.
I hope that clarifies things. -Xindi Kraid: Delivering acerbic wit and scathing comments with just a dash of 'stab you in the eye' |

Edited by: 4th Dominion on 30/10/2010 07:35:01 So what you are saying is that if Im using win7 and execute the eve.exe file, eve will automaticly use directx 11 instead of the built-in directx 9?

no, it will use the dx9 fork thats build into dx10/11 eve doesn't use dx11 because there is no need to and the engine like many games is dx9 based. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Pinky: Gee, Brain. What are we going to do tonight?

This. You can wait for EVE to incorporate actual graphics that require/benefit from DX11 around the time XP loses support from Microsoft and Win 7 gains 50-60% of the userbase. Which I believe is not yet the case, XP Home has support until early 2012 I believe - just checked it, SP3 has support until 8th of April 2014, and most players are still likely running it now (60-70% my estimate).

TL;DR : absolutely not.
There is no DX9-only app that can be "turned into" a DX11 app just by "running some command line parameters". The app itself has to be able to handle DX11. EVE only handles DX9, not even DX10.
There are only 11 games "live" right now that support DX11 natively, another one to some degree with command-line support and another one SoonÖ for a total of 12-13 so far : Linkage

no need to estimate. ccp has used the steam hardware survey for looking at video cards in use. the september survey has around 69% of windows versions surveyed are directx 11 capable. though i didn't add up what percentage has DX 11 video cards.

Yes, but cards are only half of the equation. Even if your card was manufactured yesterday, you need to be running windows 7 to use DX11. According to the report, only 5.6% of users have BOTH a DX11 card AND Windows 7 and only half of users have DX10.

Edited by: 4th Dominion on 30/10/2010 10:53:07 According to a forum post regarding world of warcraft on sweclockers.com, adding the command -d3d11 in the desktop shortcut for the world of warcraft executable forces the application to use directX 11....I was wondering if eve worked the same way, but apperently it doesnt.

concidering that wow has lower gfx than eve... dont think turning on dx11 support will do anything to the game. might be something fancy for the wow extra nerds to spout about that they run dx11 or some stuff :P
you would have to build the entire gfx engine around dx11 for it to work... its not just a on and off switch.
if you have dx11 installed atm.. you will still use dx9 because its built into dx11 so it supports multiple platforms.
and allso.. does your gfx card itself support dx11 ?
even then... DX11 proper stuff wount be coming out en masse for years... we havent even had decent dx10 jump from 9 :)
so for dx11... nothing to even think about for a year or so. ---------------------------------- Fighting for something

That's because the guys from Blizzard recently added support for DX11 (which you would have noticed if you would have followed the link above - it's "experimental" support so far since the Cataclysm thingy)... no idea why anyway, the graphics are barely even worth calling DX9-worthy, more like DX8.
So far the "huge improvement" in that experimental DX11 support has been the ability to see reflections on water surfaces, everything else looks almost exactly the same. Or so I hear (look for yourself).
There's probably more geometric complexity, texture size and shading or whatnot in a single larger-sized EVE ship than in one entire WoW scene... oh, and if you haven't noticed, Amarr ship shiny bits so totally do reflect the environment. It's not what version of DX you support, it's what you do with it.

DX11 for WoW is because of the new water effect being added in Cataclysm. And possibly some new spell effects, but that's about it.

To force eve to use DX 11 you must find first those nasty forum trolls who`s crying about EVE tech progress here and there. "Oh noes EVE will not support my 10 years old graphics card with shader model 2.0 support, damn you CCP!", "oh noes to play EVE i must delete my 8 years old WinXP and upgrade to Windows 7, damn you CCP!" Find them in real life and battle them for epic humanity progress

For eve to utilise DX11/10, the shader code needs to be changed so that it takes advantage of DX10/11 API calls. That's all DirectX is, a huge API (simplifying it a lot for the jargonz).
If there are no DX 11 API calls, it won't use DX11. If it does, it will. Since Trinity does not, it won't. ---

forcing everyone to use dx11 would render a good portion of the eve population (xp/vista users) unable to play.
bad move from a financial point of view for ccp to do that SIG: if my message has spelling errors its cos i fail at typing properly :P |

i'm not disagreeing with you. i did imply you needed both DX 11 OS and card. i was responding responding to Teinyhr's estimate that currently the OS is the limiting factor in DX 11 implementation where to survey shows its the card. i myself only have a DX 10 card.

Eve doesn't even utilize the maximum out of directx9 in capabilities for fancy graphics. I don't see this being upgraded till incarna comes and even that would be doable with 9 So wait this is the end of my post allready?
