Ok... I've watched it all and I'm going to write a little wall of text. If you don't want to read it, then don't. Just skip it.
Here it goes: The theory itself existed for quite some time now. He's not showing anything new. But... there's always "but"... Some people are different and some games are different. Like EVE, for example. You don't have little rewards as a primary motivational stimulant. Well, if you choose to, you can play that way, but EVE offers more. This game offers something that appeals to broader spectrum of people. It offers freedom. You see, you can be a spoiled little brat that requires a reward every time it puts a tiny little effort on doing a good thing, but there are places (or countries) where this is just not happening. Some of us live in a place where nobody cares about you and certainly no one will reward you just because you've done something. In this environment, you must fight for yourself, grab what you can and if (but only if) your are moral, you'll try not to hurt those who stand on your way (not literally hurt... like kick someone - it's more in a figurative way). Having morality as your attribute is not obligatory. You have to choose for yourself who you want to be and how you are going to get what you want. When you translate this in a virtual world, you won't get World of Warcraft or any other online game. Except for one - EVE Online. There's the real beauty of this game. Once you realize that you are not worth anything to anyone and that the only one that is going to help you if you fall is yourself, you will begin to see that you have numerous options in front of you. That's because you are not limited with expectations of the environment, you are not guided to become something or someone by your family, friends, or even government. You become truly free. In the real world, like it is in EVE, you can make shortcuts, not so moral, probably illegal but profitable. On the other hand you'll create enemies or lose friends in the process. In both worlds, real and New Eden, it's not the currency that matters or your achievements. It's the ability to make friends and maintain friendships. The only way to do this while still getting what you want is creation.
"Creation is so precious and greed so destructive" ... ringing a bell?
And that's why I play this game. I don't play it to open boxes and get rewarded for it. I don't play it because I expect in game reward for doing so. Making ISK is merely a process of getting the means to stay in the game. I play this game because it offers freedom that I have in real world and couldn't possibly be interested in a game that limits my possibilities just as I couldn't live in an environment that is artificially limiting them. And morality? Well, that's the part you have to figure out for yourself.

If by spoiled brat you mean, human then sure. Our response to that type of reward system is evolutionary.

Yes the response is natural, but would you consider the willingness to be absorbed into such an artificial and juvenile state of action/response conditioning the act of someone that is spoiled, overindulgent, and/or lazy?

we are at a point in our evolution where we understand a lot about ourself, and thus we can change accordingly. Only by conciously staying ignortant will we let it dominate us. Skinnerian methods in games is not the future :) --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Life imitating art in a very real sense then, according to TED. Its an interesting idea. How amusing that we invented games merely to entertain, and now these worlds we have built, and the rules we created to run those games, have begun to inform our education systems. I wondered how long it would take.

That it's "juvenile" is your opinion, lets not pass it off as fact. It simply is what it is, and works the way it does because we have evolved towards that over millions of years. Of course we'll keep evolving and eventually away from that, but that isn't going to happen in the space of a few years.

Edited by: Vogue on 04/11/2010 18:31:39 Nothing inspiring in that video really: D+. Commentary on the psychological narcotic effect of linear treadmill MMO' such as World Of Warcraft. It did not comment on the social aspects of MMO's that include the typical problems of the internet - lack of accountability->responsiblilty. The issues of self aggrandizement that comes from that. But also by the same token how this group anonymity has no RL peer pressure or need for RL social ice breakers. That allow people from all over the world to integrate into virtual social groups easier
How World Of Warcraft had it's roots in MUD's - telnet command line interface computer games. That were immersive like how books are. You create a rich world in your head from your imagination being prompted by the text on the screen.
How tribal groups can arise from MMO's that are similar to well establish groups that derive from RL sports such as football.
And how perhaps that people who did not excel at RL sports at school and in their youth use MMO's as the competitive alternative.
Also how geek's who did not fit into their somewhat local parochial environment post school social have found a new avenue for social opportunities from MMO's that did not exist pre internet multi player computer games. This is another attractor for MMO's.

I should have said rudimentary instead of juvenile. These same people could get similar rewards from much more complex action reward systems. The choice to stick with such a simple action/response system as opposed to one including higher mental/physical systems is lazy and that shows how simple a creature we really are and that it takes discipline to get past these hard wirings. That is all I was trying to get across.
