so, some of my more... mortal.. employees were going over logs and recordings of my probes and other sensors I've taken into wormhole space in the recent past.
they found something... impressive. something beyond the usual static and typical sensor logs. an ancient audio log captured by mistake on a broadband transmission.
some of it is beyond repair, but... its generally comprehensible:
Quote: for a few minutes of standing in the darkness, i realised i could see my hand quite clearly - something i had noticed i could not do on previous nights. so i looked up and expected to see the glow of the full moon, but the moon was nowhere in sight.
instead, there was a long, glowing cloud overhead. the <static> called it the 'via galactica' the road of <static>. today, we call it the <static>y way. for those that missed the lesson at school that day, the basic facts are these:
remembering that 1 ly is equivilent to 6 trillion miles, our galaxy has a diameter of somewhere around 100,000 LY. our sun is located to the edge of one of our galaxies spiral arms, somewhere around 26,000 LY away from the center buldge.
it takes 200-250 million years for the sun to complete one revolution around the orbit of the galaxy. sorrounding the galaxy, above and below the disc in a circular halo, there are 200 globular clusters containing somewhere around 1 million stars each. the galaxy itself contains around 2 billion stars - give or take. these numbers are essential to understanding what a galaxy IS. but when contemplating them, some part of the human mind protests that it cannot be so. if you examine the evidence, it will bring you to the conclusion that it is.
if you take that conclusion out on dark, clear night, and look up... you might see something that will change your life. This is what a galaxy looks like. for every star you can see with your naked eye, you can see a hundred more around it with a pair of binoculars. all of them suspended in a grey, blue mist.
if you look at it with a meager telecope, and wait for your eye to ajust to the dark, and get the focus just right you will see what that mist really is: more stars. like dust, fading into what tastes like... infinity.
The rest is still being put together, but... I thought I would share that much.

Such archaic naivety, it seems to me the race who transcribed this passage likely had not even the technology to venture far from their home planet, much less leave the confines of their own star system.
An interesting find to be sure. |

what sticks out to me is the globular clusters bit, and the human reference...
the rest is... meh at best. --

Edited by: Roga Dracor on 05/11/2010 16:06:39 The language is philosophy. And the idea applies to macro\microcosmic theory. Imagine your suns were parts of an atom. Then imagine that atom is in your toe.
But the globular clusters is the point that really explains alot.

Myxx. If you like this sort of thing then subscribe to the archeological journals of the main cluster universities. Some of the stuff they pull out of old data systems and translate can be fascinating. Regards,

these transmissions can travel out there for infinity. Maybe its authentic. Also i'm wondering, wich solar system in wich galaxcy is the author refering to?

It takes an infinity amount of time to travel for infinity.
If it is sent using conventional method, it shouldn't be older than 100 years old because that's roughly how big the cluster is, about 100ly, similar to New Eden. If it is sent using some FTL method, it shouldn't be anything ancient, because any transmission would have evaporated the moment it is sent if it is not sent just a moment ago.
Maybe it isn't authentic.

thoughts?
If that galaxy is 100K LY across, then the radius is 50K LY, so how can their sun be 26K LY from the centre AND near the edge of one of the galaxies spiral arms? Unless by 'edge' they did not mean outer edge.
