As a long time player I feel qualified to offer this critique of the current state of UI in the game. Quite simply it is not at all well designed nor has it been updated to keep pace with current trends. Font size anyone? I'm sure 12 point font was just awesome when we all had 800x600 displays but the max setting shouldn't cause eyestrain. It's barely serviceable in my opinion.
Next topic your science and industry panel. I open it to check on my PI stuff each day. I watch it suck up a quarter of my screen to display 4 lines of text data. I admire the "Science and industry" label atop the panel. Concise and descriptive. Then I glance down and admire "Science and industry" again in a big giant font with a huge hunk of dead space all around it. Apparently big fonts are only for reiterating useless info and accenting horrible wasteful layouts.
Then I go to start extractors and each one pops up a handy hologram that blocks me from selecting anything nearby. Maybe instead of wasting time making holograms that serve no purpose you could devote those man hours to solving the mystery of legible fonts? I'm being kind of mean to the science and industry panel but that's only because it might obscure the view of my cargo hold.
I know it's my cargo hold because the top of the panel says so. I also know because of the giant icon of cargo sucking up space that could be better used not being wasted. I like to leave that one in icon display most times since even if I switch to detail view I still can't resize the window down to meet my needs. Why do windows have arbitrary minimum sizes? Will some graphic artist cry himself to sleep if I don't see his awesome cargo icon? No worries Mr. artist I will see your icon, how can i not with the huge waste of space it is?
So then i go to my wallet to look at how space rich I am. I see my balance and then various tabs below that. Why aren't those tabs simply displayed right of balance? Even if I put the window down to the locked minimum there is plenty of room to fit them that way and not waste space.
I can go on like this for days but the bottom line is the UI is pretty abysmal. Space waste is rampant and the entire system really deserves an overhaul. At the very least we need an advanced user option that does away with the fluff. The amount of information you want access to in eve means screen space is at a premium and the lazy UI really works against the player rather than giving them a clean concise display of needed info.
You guys have to know this is the case, I can't believe anyone who works on UI for a living looks at what you have and is at all proud of it. We're talking about simple client interface fixes here, you don't have to fix lag or something crazy. Just update your UI to something that doesn't stab me in the eyes every time I look at it.

As a trader I generally have to have 2 windows open constantly: the Market & Wallet.
The Market window frankly was designed by a turgid rhesus monkey on crack with a determined hate for people who trade. Why can't the Market window highlight *my orders*? Life made simple? Not in my universe!
But the Wallet window is my favorite overall. Imagine if you will a window that you *must* work with. A window that is absolutely central to how you work. Imagine having around 300 buy/sell orders. Imagine being decent enough trader that you're buying and selling items all the time. Now imagine if you will a grid loaded with buy & sell orders **that jumps around all the time**.
In the immortal words of that philosopher king Slim Pickens: "Jumping around like a bunch of Kansas City ***gots!".
Literally every single time you buy or sell anything through a buy/sell order the entire grid will jump. Basically the programmer instead of updating the quantity remaining on the buy/sell order "refreshes" the entire grid by rebuilding it. This causes the grid to "blink". Plus when an order is finished instead of deleting that one row and only that row the CCP programmer instead rebuilds the entire grid yet again.
Now a veteran programmer will either "lock" the grid, refresh it in background and then release the "lock" so the grid won't blink and jump around. A better programmer will simply lock the grid view, update or prune the grid as necessary, release the lock and then refresh the grid view. This will result in the grid not jumping all over the damn place.
It's seriously comic. If you've got a dozen orders then it isn't a big deal. Approach 300 orders and it's utterly insane. My view of it changes, blinks and jumps around every 2-3 seconds. I try to select a specific order and instead of one thing I'll get another. Imagine trying to work while someone rocks the your desk in all 3 axes *and* is throwing tennis balls at you.
Some of you guys at CCP are either really incompetent or you really hate your players.

I am also for a UI change _BUT_ if you read devblogs etc the UI was programmed in what early 90s and even got a touch since then. If you guys read more you will notice that CCP is rewriting the UI code. (that is why we got hell of bugs and optional patches each week)
CCP is working on to update the UI but first they have to update the framework of it. And because of that things break and bugs show because of the ugly fixes they had before.
Just lets hope they finish their "carbon" or whatever and get their work on the fonts etc. The font is hard to read at my 1920x1080 monitors and often have to strain my eyes. The chat is awful trying to read anything.

HTFU and HIRE the OP now! |
