While flying between systems in my Iteron, occasionally someone at the gate will either attempt to or lock onto my ship before I align and warp off. Either through the interface or in game, I see the yellow square flashing. I have heard conflicting reports that these people are still locking onto me and fail since I leave versus they are already locked onto me and I am catching up to their lock by automatically locking back onto them but then fail by leaving.
Some clarification would be good. Thanks!

You are locked the moment you see the yellow boxes.
Often these are fail gankers and they just cargo scanned you.
The better ones use passive targeters, which can lock you without yellow boxing
and further more why do i even need a sig? |

Lock time depends on your signature radius, the signal strength of the opposing ship, and skills and fleet boosts. There are also modules that increase lock time, and let's not forget those passive targeting systems.
Also, remember that a lock does not mean a hostile action. Running a cargo or ship scanner is not a hostile action. As for if they have you locked, in an Itty, chances are they have you locked before you warp off, they've scanned your ship, and have already decided if you are worth ganking or not.

when you are locked, then it means that you are scanned and next jump is gang ready to gank. If you by some coincidence haul enough valuable cargo, you will be also most probably ganked.

Yellow box is locked, Red box is ****ed. Assuming you're flying an untanked hauler in highsec.

Just as a 'by the way'
Turn off auto target back - won't matter in an industrial, but might get you concorded in some other situations. In the escape menu, its bottom centre of the 'general' tab
