Most games a the concept of a level, and that level is visible for everyone to see. Eve has skillpoints that act similar to a level, but currently they are visible to the owner only.
Why not make these visible to others? It would be nice to see the SP's on a char before you let them in your guild, and it would also be nice for others to see your sp's as it's a measure of how much time you've put into the game.

I don't disagree with this idea, but since skills are time-based you can usually figure out roughly how many SP a player has by looking at the age of the character. Players that have been around since early retail typically have something in the region of 17-25million SPs, though it doesn't give you any clue as to where those skill points have gone.

Why exactly would you want this. I have nothing against having it. The only downfall I see is that it's extra information to process.
Why do you care what some one has trained? What benefit is it?

whether you like it or not, pretty much all decent corps will ask your to provide screen shots of your characters, specifically to check for alts and skill points

go play WoW plz. I don't want to know how many skillpoints someone has, nor do I want to know if someone trained torpedoes to 4 or 5 before I engage them.
not knowing makes it more interesting imho. --

"Why not make these visible to others?"
For the same reason it's very poor idea in the other games -- people run away at the sight of anyone remotely close to their own level and gods forbid higher, while focusing on 'easy ganks' of characters with less levels than themselves...

Sorry, is that supposed to be a downside? Erm anyway... IMO they should remain hidden, otherwise people will just avoid those with higher "skill points" than them, and aim for the easy victims. ====================================

*Tom, having finished special forces training 5 months ago, finds himself deployed in Iraq with the difficult mission of infiltrating a terrorist stronghold. He stealthfully makes his way down a hall and peaks around the corner where he sees a terrorist holding an AK. Tom knows he can sneak up behind the guy and engage in hand to hand combat, but first he wants to make sure that he can take the guy. He right clicks on the terrorist and selects "show info". Under the "skills" tab, he sees that the terrorist only has knife lvl2 and fist lvl3. Tom closes the window and continues with his mission...*

The fun part would be when someone runs away from a char with 15mil SPs, except they're all in science and industry. Oops.

No. NO. NO.
I don't want a player to know if I have 200 or 20 million skill points. It's already hard enough some days to get people to undock.
"Don't engage Seleene! She's Level 38!!"
"That corp has an average PvP level of 24!"
I like it the way it is. You never really know what you're getting into just by looking at a character's info. Even the employment history doesn't tell you much if the character is more than a few months old.
So, what I'm trying to say is...

Eh, never let someone elses skill levels stop me from fighting the last months. In fact I'm completely aware that I've probably attacked or fought many people with a great deal less or more SP than I have. But you're right, people would probably use such info to bash newbs or run away.

Not a chance.....
It would also serve at as an excuse for losing.... (as well as running away)
"Yeah he had 10mil SPs more than me!!! Waaaaa.... why can't they pick on someone at thier own level huh? huh? I know let's make it so that you can only attack someone who is within 2mil skills of you..."
Perish the thought.

Then they'll make it so that people with below 5 mil sp can't engage in pvp or be engaged.

Both side make good arguements both pro and con, yet no one has mentioned the obvious.....why not make it an optional feature that the player can turn on and off in the menu?
If they want others to see, then they turn it on and everyone is happy

There is already too much free info revealed in EVE, the local, # of players in space, etc etc...
To not totaly disband your idea, when you apply to a corp your SP could become visible to the CEO (the CEO use this info to see if someone is an alt or inactive). No other person should be able to see my SP, its personal information I would only give out to my CEO for security reasons. Like the rest said too much running away in the game already!

Well the expedient test is to ask them to show up in an interceptor. If they can't manage even that, you don't need to bother with extensive probing, just block them immediately and send out a corp mail to the other directors.
You have to employ other methods to determine if it is a second or third account of course.
