I am surprised to wake up this morning and find that the new Eve character creation demonstrations have drawn outside attention on popular media websites.
Wimp
Congrats to the Dev team for reaching a milestone for not just Eve, but the industry as a whole

Wow, I saw the character creator on Kotaku yesterday and thought that was pretty cool. I'm surprised it made wimp.
I guess CCP really did do a good job with the avatar creator

If you were to look they actually reference every piece with a URL. This is not stealing. Their FAQ also mentions how they will take videos down at the request of owners.
Really, what makes you think this is stealing?

I will tell you it doesn't work as fast as that video, but it's still in the early stages ofc. But wow it's absolutely amazing the customization you have. It really is an amazing program.

Or, a really good job of self-promoting PR.
In the end, neither of these possibilities means much, as so much effort has gone into the creation of a good-looking avatar that will be totally useless until some possible time in the future.
All things considered, I'd rather have the old avatar and a fix or two to long-existing problems within the Eve world as it exists now.

No it really does work that fast, for me at least. What impresses me most about the creator isn't the customisation, because there's a a few games that have similar customisation. It's the high level of graphical quality that other character creators just can't touch.
I just hope that's the graphics we see in stations. Reason I say that is because the only character creator that even came close to this was the former APB, but the graphics you saw in the editor were higher quality than what you saw in the game

Well the mere graphics pixel quality isn't the thing that I wonder about the most.
It's what the characters are actually capable of. Are they just looking nice and can play minigames and drink Quafe and look at erotic dancers?
We actually yaven't seen anything in terms of gestures, facial expressions, postures. Will our characters be expressionless walking dolls with some very basic movements or will they really be able to come alive? Will we be able to raise our eyebrows in a meeting? Will our face laugh when we do the "laugh emote" or will we just get a very general "shake" animation with "Jennifer Starling laughs" in the chatbox? Or will it be so advanced that there will even be lipsync and a wide range of expressions and emotes?
(sorry, I'm still quite inspired by the Clear Skies fanvids)

Given how fluid and sophisticated the animation looked in CCPs earlier APEX demonstration video (it's on their YouTube channel, easy enough to find), I'm guessing the character animation is going to be pretty stellar. My guess is that they'll start of small at launch next year, but adding more complexity down the road shouldn't be too difficult.

I would be very happy if that were the case but I don't think the APEX engine is the same as what's going to be used in Incarna (the WoD engine).
Well we can hope ...

APEX provides the physics framework for Incarna and WoD, so I do believe that is their intention. If they pull it off, it'll be glorious.

But come Incarna, it won't be a spaceship game anymore. Keep in mind we know very little what functionality Incarna adds to the game other than Second Life in Space (but we've heard of hints of performing "sneaky stuff"), but it's entirely possible that Incarna will become as big part of EVE as flying spaceships is.

Apex Clothing
Since NVidia are showcasing CCPs work I think you can pretty much put money on Apex Clothing being in Incarna and WoD.

They are supposed to react to other characters based on your standings automaticly as you walk around the station, I can only guess you will be able to make other gestures at your command (fortunately not dancing, I hope no other gesture that can be used out of contest either). What I wonder is how comms will work, both written and voiced, will the game assume write is talking as well? Will we go aroung mute and writing on a keyboard to communicate? Will we be able to hear other people voices as we come close?

While I agree that most games have very silly dances I liked the concept in Anarchy Online where you couldn't just do your race/class specific dance but everyone could pick from .. 40 different dances, from jive to waltz to disco. After all, if we have exotic dancers we might have music as well?

I imagine that each office and bar has its own chat channel, pretty much like you have fleet and corp chat now. If we could also have lip sync .. but that would be too much to ask for I'm araid ..

Nothing wrong if you can dance only in designated areas, could be nice if we could program our own set of face and body gestures through the editor, making body ones restricted to where you can dance, but I fear it could be abused too. Maybe just face gestures. Or dance moves restricted to combination of predefined dancing moves (fit your moves in low/medium/high slot ). Quote: I imagine that each office and bar has its own chat channel, pretty much like you have fleet and corp chat now. My question comes as how writting chat will be handled in-game (as in how our character handles it, does he write too or pretend to talk?)

Agreed. A sandbox should cater as much options as possible, shooting ships or making money are just a few options in a "space sim". An endless war and an industry that only makes ships to replace the destroyed ones is a bit of a narrow scope if you compare that with all that is possible in a future space.

Well there's a number of options I think. 1) most probable - you just see the words in the bar/office chat; 2) less likely - you see the words in chat and your character is gesturing; 3) ideally - CCP buys a number of licences of the "speaking" program that translates your words into language and (variety 1) makes your characters lips sync and even (variety 2) offers a number of accents that you want to use (US, UK accents, gender, age).
For my work I once went to an exhibition (is that the correct word?) for medical related software, I was quite impressed with the speech aiding programs available. There's a lot of possibilities available for this kind of things. No idea if CCP really wants to invest into this too much though.

Now I'm willing to bet they're going to somehow screw AMD owners over by not allowing this to run in hardware but software mode. Not that I care, my CPU is powerful enough and Physix is irrelevant anyway, but it'll be yet another low-handed approach by nVidia.

Observing that the character they created is basically Picard in terribly bland clothing.
I'm assuming they will add some sort of coloring system as part of the creator, but you can never be sure...
Also if any dev is in this thread, will all the costumes from the previous incarnation of the character creator still be present?

Amen. I would much rather have had something powered by Bullet or HAVOX than APEX/Physx. Proprietary software SHOULD be a thing of the past. Locking out vendors is just a crap way of alienating customers. ---

Speaking of dancing and animation Anarchy Online has/had an exemplar repertoire of various animations your character could make. Whata incarna should have is the music system that LOTRO uses where you can literally play the instrument your character has or run a premade "key map" for a specific song, the system is incredible if you ask me.

Exactly
Rather than spend that effort on a decent GUI , they spend it on this abomination.
CCP really has their head up their ass. I know their customers are increasing, but I see no reason to recommend this game anymore. My account expires this year and I wont be renewing.
