Hey all!
I've been playing around with the idea lately of a Astrometric/Scan frigate that's primary use would be to... you guessed it... scan.
I've thought that this would be a similar concept to the ORE Barges, only some other independant corporation makes this... preferable some corporation that is really innovative/high-tech.
The ship skill would be Astrometrics or such and would be a rank 2 or 3 skill that you would have to train.
It would function mostly in combat as a support ship to help it's gangmates.
There would be say 2, maybe 3 versions of it.
All versions would have the following: CPU: Higher than usual CPU for a Frigate-class PG: Lower than usual PG for a Frigate-class Capacitor: Around average Speed: 300-350 m/s Shield: Average Frigate Shield Armor: Average Frigate Armor Skill Bonus: +5% to scan bonus per Astrometrics level Sensor strength: 11-15 in all of the sensors Targeting: FAST Scan Resolution: Relatively small Appearance: Somewhat cylindrical, with on one end the thruster, the other end the visible*****pit type thing. It's hull would be dark, maybe slightly dark purple+black mixed together in a fluid type way. Turret hardpoints would be on the "top" and "sides" of the Cylinder-shape. Scanner Turret (discussed later) would look primarily like a satellite dish or such but with a blue mining-laser type look in the middle. Some nifty effects (say the hull has little protruding sensors on them that emit some nifty green ring or something to make it look like it's scanning, similar to the Cormorant's Lights.
Version 1: Req Skill: Astrometric 1, SC 3 High Slots: 2, 1 Turret, 1 Launcher Medium Slots: 2 Low Slots: 2
Version 2: Req Skill: Astrometric 3, SC 3 High Slots: 3, 2 Turrets, 1 Launcher Medium Slots: 3 Low Slots: 2
Version 3: Req Skill: Astrometric 5, SC 3 High Slots: 4, 3 Turrets, 2 Launchers Medium Slots: 3 Low Slots: 2
Okay... now that we've got all this boring stuff covered, we'll hit the actual stuff with combat in mind.
A battle is about to occur with about 7-8 ships on both sides. Side A has a Astrometric pilot they decide to use. He jumps in his ship, and heads out with the "fleet" in a gang. Blah blah blah. Side A is attacking a defended mining operation in 0.0 space, 5-6 defenders and 4 strip miners (Side B). Side A jumps in, but is out of most of the ranges of the ship. Our Astrometric pilot locks some of the defenders (The Astrometric pilot has a super-fast lock time and a really large targetting distance). He locks three of the defenders and fires his Scanner turrets, one for each (assuming this pilot has the best Astrometric frigate) defender. Preferably, when this occurs, the targetted ships would be "painted" light blue-ish to show they're being scanner turreterized. This painting would in theory increase the signature of the painted ships making them very easy to target and hit. Immediately when they are painted, everyone in the gang acquire those painted targets and due to this their effective range are increased with the new scanning information.
In theory, this increases the total range, optimal range, tracking on the ship, and thus total damage against those being painted. I've been thinking this would give everyone in the gang about 125% damage (+25% from the scanning information), but that number is just a guess at stuff.
The bottom line is this would effectively increase tracking, accuracy, and damage against any ship painted by the Astrometrics frigate, and would be the best Anti-Target Scrambler in the game since it's sensors would be so strong. I've been considering that the turrets should be able to paint almost anything (planets, gates, what-have-you) to allow those that have been warp scrambled to acquire the location they're shooting for and be able to warp.
Note: I'm not the most combat-oriented person in the world, it just seems like this could add another new role to the game, and I'd also rather see things I could never have (Titans, Dreadnaughts, etc.) be implemented and balanced before any other frigate-class stuff comes out. With my luck, there is a ship already that does this or something and I'll be flamed to death. :-D But, I decided I wanted to post this idea.
