can slaves be freed and if so how, I have about 200 of them at the mo and they are asking to be set free ;-)

Trash them and just pretend it's setting them free, at all that is what I did with them.

Don't trash them, that sends them to the ship/station garbage compactor. Take them out into space and jettison them in a can. Life in a jetcan may not be glamorous, but it's better than working in a velspar mine. Don't forget to leave some frozen food and dairy products in there for them, otherwise they'll starve.

But the containers will explode after 2 hours, so they will be for sure dead.
The garbage compactor has for sure a scanner which scans for biological life to sort it out before compacting the garbage.

I believe that some Minmatar agents give out offers to exchange slaves for homeless and exotic dancers, which is effectively freeing them. Of course, slaves are counted as contraband in Minnie space, so you'd have some trouble transporting them to the agent...
Other than that, you can offer to give them to any kindly Amarrian holder (such as myself) who will offer them a good home with all of the creature comforts that they need.
Some of the Minmatar RP terrorist / freedom fighting corps such as Matsuata Matari collect slaves in order to one day free them once there's a good game mechanism for doing so.
